CHILDREN S MESSAGE Ann Wilson #2233 The Faith We Sing Where Children Belong This, this is where children belong, welcomed as part of the worshiping throng. Water, God s word, bread and cup, prayer and song: This is where children belong. As the congregation sings, all children are invited to come forward. I Am a Child of God I am a child of God; You are God s child, it s true. Children of God are called to love one another, as Jesus taught to do. As the congregation sings, the children may go to their Sunday School classes, and youth may go to Youth Connect in Room 203. OUR MISSION & COMMON LIFE We thank God for these opportunities for fellowship, for worship, and for service. Thanks be to God! THE PSALM Psalm 23 (KJV) WE HEAR GOD S WORD Word of God, Word of Life. Thanks be to God! WE RESPOND Rev. English Carol Reich ANTHEM The Chancel Choir/Dr. James Smith, Music Director This Is My Father's World (arr. Mack Wilberg) This is my Father's world, and to my list'ning ears all nature sings, and 'round me rings the music of the spheres. This is my Father's world: I rest me in the thought of rocks and trees, of skies and seas; his hand the wonders wrought. This is my Father's world, the birds their carols raise, the morning light, the lily white, declare their maker's praise. This is my Father's world: he shines in all that's fair; in the rust'ling grass I hear Him pass; He speaks to me ev'rywhere. This is my Father's world, O let me ne'er forget that though the wrong seems oft so strong, God is the ruler yet. This is my Father's world: why should my heart be sad? The Lord is King; let the heavens ring! God reigns; let the earth be glad! SERMON Love's the Shepherd of All Rev. Patricia Farris INVITATION TO PRAYER #2058 TFWS Shepherd Me, O God LISTENING FOR THE VOICE OF GOD SILENT PRAYER & PASTORAL PRAYER Rev. English

F O C U S O N April 22, 2018 WORLD LABYRINTH DAY In collaboration with The Labyrinth Society, all are invited to the global celebration of the Labyrinth at the 10th Annual World Labyrinth Day. Join over 5,000 people taking steps for peace, Walking as One at 1 in the afternoon. Last year s gatherings were held in over 20 countries and 45 US states. The First UMC Labyrinth was laid in the Simkins Hall floor as part of the remodel of Simkins Hall, completed in 2008. (Prior to that, the church purchased a portable canvas labyrinth and lovingly used it for 9 years.) The First UMC Labyrinth is a replica of the Chartres Labyrinth in France. In the Middle Ages, this particular labyrinth design (called The Medieval Eleven Circuit) was incorporated into the floors of twenty-two of the eighty great cathedrals being built during that time. The most famous of the eleven circuit labyrinths, and the only one remaining as it was originally laid, can be found in the floor of Chartres Cathedral in France. The First UMC Labyrinth continues to serve as a community outreach open to all; a place for meditation, prayer and reflection for all ages. Walking the Labyrinth is an ancient spiritual practice, a way to quiet our minds and open our spirits to the presence of the Holy. Every step a prayer. This day will replace the regularly scheduled 3rd Sunday walk for May. May Labyrinth Walk: Saturday May 5 Labyrinth open 12:30 2:30 p.m. and also by appointment (call the church office (310) 393-8258). Thanks to Sharon Delgado, we ll expand our Lenten theme, Love God/Love Creation, out to today s Earth Day. Basing her argument on the commandments to love God and neighbor, Rev. Delgado, an ordained UM elder, uses the traditional Wesleyan quadrilateral (Scripture, tradition, reason, and experience) to unpack the issues and point us towards a creation-loving, justice-seeking ethic. This is a call to faithfulness and hope! And along the way, it teaches us how Methodists do theology. Come even if you haven t read the book!
