Genesis 6:5-8 Genesis 6:5 8 (NKJV) 5 Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 6 And the Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. 7 So the Lord said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping thing and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them. 8 But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.
Genesis 9:12-17 Genesis 9:12 17 (NKJV) 12 And God said: This is the sign of the covenant which I make between Me and you, and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations: 13 I set My rainbow in the cloud, and it shall be for the sign of the covenant between Me and the earth. 14 It shall be, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the rainbow shall be seen in the cloud;
Genesis 9:12-17 Genesis 9:12 17 (NKJV) 15 and I will remember My covenant which is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh; the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. 16 The rainbow shall be in the cloud, and I will look on it to remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth. 17 And God said to Noah, This is the sign of the covenant which I have established between Me and all flesh that is on the earth.
How God is portrayed in the movie can only be called blasphemous for the creator of the Noah movie is not the Creator, the God, the Sovereign One of the Bible. Just as much as the true Noah story is about Sin (as discussed last week)
God Is Close One of the gross misrepresentations of the movie is that God is presented as being distant. 2. The Creator doesn t speak to Noah in any discernible manner, leaving Noah to guess after night dreams and a session with some kind of hallucinogenic tea from Methuselah.
He Knows What Happens Here Genesis 6:5 (NKJV) 5 Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. God is aware of not only what we do, but who we are within He knows. God knows the heart of man, a truth that is taught throughout the Bible. 2. It is said of Jesus, John 2:25 (NKJV) 25 and had no need that anyone should testify of man, for He knew what was in man. 3. Hebrews 4:13 (NKJV) 13 And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account. 4.
He Interacts Here The interaction is primarily one of judgment here, but we also see God s grace. Genesis 6:13 (NKJV) 13 And God said to Noah, The end of all flesh has come before Me, for the earth is filled with violence through them; and behold, I will destroy them with the earth. In Genesis 6:13, we see both the judgment and the grace. 2. The remainder of Genesis 6 continues with the instructions and details of the flood as God did not leave Noah to guess. 3. Notice that the instructions in Genesis 6 are very specific in points because God s interaction with man as far as commandment is concerned is always as specific as it needs to be and meant to be obeyed.
He Interacts Here Consider the rainbow of Genesis 9:12-17. It is God s promise, still before us today showing that his long-suffering, mercy, and grace are still ever present for us. If you think God is distant, just look to the rainbow and know He isn t. Do you believe in Prayer? Jesus said to Ask, Knock, and Seek (Matthew 7:7-11). 2. Prayer only works if God is still working here. 3. The same is true of the promise of Matthew 6:33 for the provisions of life. 4. But if God is close, knowing you and interacting here, then that means that I must live a life that is pleasing to Him.
God Is Concerned
We Are His Image Bearers We first read, Genesis 1:26-27, Let Us make man in Our own image, according to Our likeness. Then, Genesis 6:11, The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence. Man turned the image of God into violence. God is concerned for us because He knows our potential, our created nature. 2. Yet we see in Genesis 6 just how far man had fallen. 3. How are we holding up God s image?
About Mankind Genesis 6:6 (NKJV) 6 And the Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. One does not become sorry concerning or grieved over one about which he does not care. Perhaps the 120 years was given not only as time to prepare the ark but as a time for repentance (Gen. 6:3), like unto Jonah s preaching to the great city of Nineveh? 2. Genesis 8:20-22; Even God s lift of the ground curse (Genesis 3) following the flood is evidence of His concern for mankind s well-being. 3. The rainbow also serves as further evidence of such.
About the Righteous Genesis 6:8 (NKJV) 8 But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord. Genesis 6:18 (NKJV) 18 But I will establish My covenant with you; and you shall go into the ark you, your sons, your wife, and your sons wives with you. God delivers those who are His. What kind of a man was Noah? Genesis 6:9 10 (NKJV) 9 This is the genealogy of Noah. Noah was a just man, perfect in his generations. Noah walked with God. 10 And Noah begot three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth. 2. Genesis 6:22 (NKJV) 22 Thus Noah did; according to all that God commanded him, so he did. 3. Genesis 7:5 6 (NKJV) 5 And Noah did according to all that the Lord commanded him. 6 Noah was six hundred years old when the floodwaters were on the earth. 2. Not just any man will find God s grace though it is available to all!
God Is Consuming The portrayal of the flood in the movie is global, which was awesome. 2. The imagery of everything breaking up as the waters were unleashed was also pretty amazing. 3. This is one place where they did a pretty good job.
God Consumes Genesis 6:7, So the Lord said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth Genesis 6:13, And God said to Noah, The end of all flesh has come before Me Genesis 6:17, And behold, I Myself am bringing floodwaters on the earth, to destroy from under heaven all flesh in which is the breath of life; everything that is on the earth shall die. Our God, the Creator and Sustainer of all, is here shown to exercise His sovereign right.
God Consumes Genesis 7:10 12 (NKJV) 10 And it came to pass after seven days that the waters of the flood were on the earth. 11 In the six hundredth year of Noah s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, on that day all the fountains of the great deep were broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened. 12 And the rain was on the earth forty days and forty nights. Genesis 7:17-20 says that the mountains were covered to 15 cubits (22.5ft) above the highest mountain. 2. God s judgment and destruction were total upon the wickedness of the earth. 3. And yet, God s salvation was just as total for His chosen as they and the animals of creation are saved.
Why It Still Matters? Because God is still close, knowing the hearts of men and interacting with man even while so many live as though He isn t. Because God is still delivering the righteous. Because God is still concerned for mankind, being long-suffering so that man might be saved. Because God is still a consuming fire. We already illustrated by the promises of prayer and provision that God is close. 2. Hebrews 4:13 (NKJV) 13 And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account. 3. God is still delivering the righteous by bringing good from evil (Romans 8:28), providing escape from temptation (1 Cor. 10:12), and providing us a living hope that we might be able to endure here (1 Peter 1:3-5). 4. After discussing the flood, Peter says, 22 Peter 3:9 13 (NKJV) 9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. 10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up. 11 Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, 12 looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved, being on fire, and the elements will melt with fervent heat? 13 Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.
Will You Submit? God is still in control today, as He was then. Don t presume that God s long-suffering is tolerance. Repent and be baptized today! 2. Romans 2:3 11 (NKJV) 3 And do you think this, O man, you who judge those practicing such things, and doing the same, that you will escape the judgment of God? 4 Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance? 5 But in accordance with your hardness and your impenitent heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, 6 who will render to each one according to his deeds : 7 eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality; 8 but to those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness indignation and wrath, 9 tribulation and anguish, on every soul of man who does evil, of the Jew first and also of the Greek; 10 but glory, honor, and peace to everyone who works what is good, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 11 For there is no partiality with God.
