The Wesleys and their friends in early Methodism offered a simple and clear Christian message. The sources are the Bible, Tradition, Reason and Experience. There was no new doctrine, rather a different emphasis on the historic biblical faith. One of the best summaries of the heart of Methodist theology is the famous Four Alls. The heart of the Christian faith is that something has gone wrong in the relationship between God and his people, and that affects all of us. It isn t about the sinners who need to be saved and the goodies who are OK - this affects everyone. The good news is that there is nobody who cannot be saved by the grace and love of God. There is nobody so bad that they cannot be saved, and nobody excluded because God isn t interested in them. Anyone who turns to him can be set free from their sin. This was the first particularly Wesleyan interpretation, arising from John s reflection on his own spiritual awakening at the meeting in Aldersgate Street: he knew deep down inside that he had been forgiven and saved. This was the gift of assurance, by which believers is given a firm foundation of confidence in the salvation they have received. In Wesley s own writings before his Aldersgate experience, there is a recurring concern with the question of his own salvation; after Aldersgate he rarely mentions it, but is concerned for the salvation of others. He is assured of his own salvation. This is the second particularly Wesleyan emphasis, often called Christian Perfection or Perfect Love. Salvation is not just about being saved sin, but being saved a new life. That new life means growing more and more into the person God wants us to be, being made more Christ-like. This is the life-long work of the Holy Spirit, enabling us to be faithful disciples here and preparing us for life in eternity Methodist teaching has boundaries beyond which it will not go, but within which there is plenty of room for interpretation. That gives a breadth of thinking which makes room for a wide range of people, conservative and liberal, high-church or low church. Thanks to Tony Burglass, to be continued

Dear Friends I am writing this following a most amazing 150 th anniversary weekend at Syke. We truly celebrated and worshipped in style. It was great to see a packed church and the charismatic Rev Steven Wild. It was also a pleasure to baptise and welcome into church membership at Syke Chris Robinson. When we as church ask ourselves are we making disciples then we can answer yes we are. There is of course a long way to go that demands time, energy and great commitment. This involves us all in our individual church settings. Once the excitement of the weekend has faded then the real work begins. We are continuing to work on our roof project and we must commend Leanne Chorlton for her tireless devotion and rallying the guides and other uniformed groups in fund raising. We are seeing the fruits of her labours though at times it does really seem like a day is like a thousand years. We are acutely aware that it is God s timing and not ours. We also continue to be amazed by the commitment of the people of Thrum Hall and especially our Rochdale Woman of the year Marilyn Jones for their work with the soup kitchen and to Peter Williams for Drum Beat in Uganda and Steve Slater and John Smith and their work in Mexico with Sol Kids. Please pray for the upcoming Summer project in Uganda and all those who are going on the trip to make a difference. We also take great pleasure in welcoming the people of Whitworth into our community and hope that they are settling in well as part of our church family. Maybe spare a thought of what it might feel like if it were Thrum Hall that was closing. This is no mean transition,it is raw and emotional. However it is God we serve and not a building and the church is the people. I hope you will offer some to time to help continue mission in Whitworth and support the members in some of the things the things we intend to continue. Massey Croft worship on Mondays, Healing Services ( see the plan),prayer breakfast at Shawforth to name a few. You would also be welcome at the Boardroom Bible Study at Anglo Recycling. Lunch at 12 thirty usually on the 1 st Wed in the month. We look forward in anticipation over the events and experiences that will take place over the coming months. May we take every opportunity to share the love of Jesus with everyone we come in touch with. We were encouraged and blessed during the time Steven was with us and we need to continue the blessing in the everyday and minutiae of our everyday living and sharing. We must go to every act of worship and join in God s work with intention and devotion and with the aim of growing in our discipleship and in loving our neighbours. God Bless Rev Helen Please continue to pray for all the church activities not least the aim of spiritual development for our church and community. Do consider joining a Bible study home group. Jonah will be studied in June at St Andrews s on Wednesday evenings led by our Superintendent. Also on 3 rd June at Syke it will be great to support 60 years of preaching with Cyril Whittle.
