Samuelson The hymn writer John Macleod Campbell writes, Now the green blade rises from buried grain, wheat that in dark earth many days has lain. We are well into the season of spring, or the season of bloom as I am calling it. The barren ground and empty branches now display grass, leaves, and flowers. In the part of the world in which we live, the season of bloom is sure. Just as the sun rises every day, spring comes ever year. Likewise, our bodies are revitalized in the spring. We exercise, we eat healthier, and we are somehow in tune with the season of bloom. Maybe not. Sometimes not. Our lives are more complicated than that of the plant life around us. Maybe we are out of tune for various reasons: health, tragedy, or loss can render us Season of Bloom out of tune. Still there is an assurance on which we can rely. Jesus has risen from the dead, just like the green blade has risen. Whatever our present circumstance is, nothing can hold us down. Maybe our spring will be a little late this year, but we will rise again. Every cross has a resurrection for those whom He loves. The power of His Spirit is with us even as He ascends to the Father, and so our spirits are also revitalized. Christ is alive, let the Christians sing, the cross stands empty to the sky. (Brian A. Wren, 1936.) Pastor Gary

Bartholomew Bishop Be Not Afraid 2016 New Jersey Synod Assembly The Twenty-Ninth Annual Synod Assembly of the New Jersey Synod will be held May 6-7 at Ocean Place Resort and Spa in Long Branch, NJ. We gather under the theme Be Not Afraid : a time to hear God s reassurance and comfort in the midst of difficult and fearful circumstances and a call to live joyful, unbounded lives. This follows a reoccurring theme in scripture, where God seeks to dwell with the people during challenging and mournful times. Whether that is finding the people in exile or the disciples after the resurrection, God s presence gathers with those struggling, and guides them to be people who share that presence with the entire world. We are looking forward to gathering as the Church together! See you there! Detroit Servant Trip Summer of 2016 This summer we are sending a group of senior high youth and adults to Detroit for a new summer servant trip Detroit Hope 2016! The group will gather at Cross Roads on Sunday, August 21 and leave bright and early on that Monday for Detroit. Tues-Thurs are our work and play days; then we drive back to NJ on Friday. We ll be working and staying with Rippling House, a ministry in the heart of Detroit that works hard to care for the poor and those in need in their city. Some of our synod s group worked with them at the ELCA Youth Gathering there last summer. There is a trip flyer and interest list you can sign up for at www.njsynod.org/youth. There is an interest meeting during the Winter Youth Assembly. Rachel Kurz Concert in New Jersey May 22, 2016 4PM Rachel Kurtz has performed at the last three ELCA Youth Gatherings as well as around the world. She has brought her beautiful voice, laughter, and passion for global justice to many New Jersey Synod Youth Events over the years. This year she is joining our Bosnia IST on the Travel Team! To help build energy and excitement of the trip, and to just have a great evening of music and laughter, come to our Rachel Kurtz Concert on Sunday, May 22 at 4:00PM. This concert is for all ages! Lead Poisoning Prevention New Jersey s Lead Hazard Control Assistance Fund has been impacted in recent years, and this has had devastating consequences. Elevated levels of highly toxic lead were found in more than 3100 young children in New Jersey last year. In 11 municipalities in New Jersey, the percentage of young children with elevated levels of lead is actually higher than in Flint, MI. To learn more and take actions, visit http://www.hcdnnj.org/leadprevention.
