Getting connected Please fill our pew pads to offer us a record of your attendance. Today from the life of the church In an age which offers a variety of escapes from the human condition, Christians are more than ever a sign of contradiction. They continue to believe that the search for God must begin with the acceptance of the human. They believe this because it is in the stable of humanity that God has come in search of us. In the human experience of Jesus, God became available to us in the depth of human life. Thus, a Christian believes that the experience of ultimate meaning comes not from a leap out of the human condition, a journey through its dark waters. John Heagle With the drawing of this Love and the voice of this Calling We shall not cease from exploration And the end of all our exploring Will be to arrive where we started And know the place for the first time. Children s Time Invitation Parents: Margaret and Justin Brown Service of Baptism Godparents: Ha and Kevin Brown, Annmarie Ulrich Address Rev. Craig Jan-McMahon The sacrament of baptism is an outward and visible sign of the grace of God. In as much as the promise of the gospel is not only to us but also to our children, baptism with water and the Holy Spirit is the mark of their acceptance into the care of Christ s church, the sign and seal of their participation in God s forgiveness, and the beginning of their growth into full Christian faith and discipleship. Questions of the Candidates Do you desire to have your child baptized into the faith and family of Jesus Christ? PARENTS: We do. Will you encourage your child to renounce the powers of evil and to receive the freedom of new life in Christ? PARENTS AND SPONSORS: We will, with the help of God. Will you teach your child that they may be led to profess Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior? PARENTS AND SPONSORS: We will, with the help of God. Do you promise, by the grace of God, to be Christ s disciples, to follow in the way of our Savior, to resist oppression and evil, to show love and justice, and to witness to the work and word of Jesus Christ as best you are able? PARENTS AND SPONSORS: We do, with the help of God. Do you promise, according to the grace given you, to grow with your child in the Christian faith, to help her be a faithful member of the church of Jesus Christ, by celebrating Christ s presence, by furthering Christ s mission in all the world, and by offering the nurture of the Christian church so that she may affirm her baptism? PARENTS AND SPONSORS: We do, with the help of God. 5

*Congregational Assent Jesus Christ calls us to make disciples of all nations and to offer them the gift of grace in baptism. Do you, who witness and celebrate this sacrament, promise your love, support, and care to the one about to be baptized, as she lives and grows in Christ? We promise our love, support, and care. *Prayer of Baptism The Lord be with you. Let us pray. And also with you. We thank you, God, for the gift of creation called forth by your saving Word. Out of the waters of the deep and amid chaos, you created order and life. In the time of Noah, when earth was buried in water, your ark of salvation bore a new beginning. In the time of Moses, your people passed through the Red Sea waters from slavery to freedom and crossed the flowing Jordan to enter the promised land. In the fullness of time, you sent Jesus Christ, who was nurtured in the water of Mary s womb. Jesus was baptized by John in the water of the Jordan, became living water to a woman at the Samaritan well, washed the feet of the disciples, and sent them forth to baptize all the nations by water and the Holy Spirit. And on this day, for this child and his family, we pray the blessing of your faithfulness through the water of life, create order when chaos threatens, bear them up when the water is deep, deliver them from all that would oppress mind, body, and soul nurture them in the womb of grace, and grant them faith to share your love with others as Christ shared your love with us. In the name of Christ we pray, Amen. Amen. Naming of a Child; Act of Baptism By what name will your child be called? Myles Anthony, you are baptized in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen. Amen. The Holy Spirit be upon you, child of God, disciple of Christ, member of the church. Amen. Amen. 6

*Baptismal Hymn Child of Blessing, Child of Promise *Prayer for the Baptized Let us pray. Bless this child, and his parents, we pray, and give them strength for life s journey, courage in time of suffering, the joy of faith, the freedom of love, and the hope of new life; through Jesus Christ, who makes us one. Amen. *Passing the Peace The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. 7

Prayer for Illumination Let us pray. Mighty God, send your Holy Spirit to speak peace, that the good news of this age may be proclaimed through your word, which stands forever. Amen. Proclaiming the Good News Scripture Isaiah 40:1-11 Comfort, O comfort my people, says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and cry to her that she has served her term, that her penalty is paid, that she has received from the Lord s hand double for all her sins. A voice cries out: In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain. Then the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all people shall see it together, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken. A voice says, Cry out! And I said, What shall I cry? All people are grass, their constancy is like the flower of the field. The grass withers, the flower fades, when the breath of the Lord blows upon it; surely the people are grass. The grass withers, the flower fades; but the word of our God will stand forever. Get you up to a high mountain, O Zion, herald of good tidings; lift up your voice with strength, O Jerusalem, herald of good tidings, lift it up, do not fear; say to the cities of Judah, Here is your God! See, the Lord God comes with might, and his arm rules for him; his reward is with him, and his recompense before him. He will feed his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms, and carry them in his bosom, and gently lead the mother sheep. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 8

PSALM 85:1-2, 8-13 You have been gracious to your land, O Lord; you have restored the good fortune of Jacob. You have forgiven the iniquity of your people and blotted out all their sins. I will listen to what the Lord God is saying; for you speak peace to your faithful people and to those who turn their hearts to you. Truly, your salvation is very near to those who fear you, that your glory may dwell in our land. Steadfast love and faithfulness have met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other. Faithfulness shall spring up from the earth, and righteousness shall look down from heaven. the Lord will indeed grant prosperity, and our land will yield its increase. Righteousness shall go before the Lord and shall prepare for God a pathway. 9

Scripture 2 Peter 3:8-15a But do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like one day. The Lord is not slow about his promise, as some think of slowness, but is patient with you, not wanting any to perish, but all to come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a loud noise, and the elements will be dissolved with fire, and the earth and everything that is done on it will be disclosed. Since all these things are to be dissolved in this way, what sort of persons ought you to be in leading lives of holiness and godliness, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set ablaze and dissolved, and the elements will melt with fire? But, in accordance with his promise, we wait for new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness is at home. Therefore, beloved, while you are waiting for these things, strive to be found by him at peace, without spot or blemish; and regard the patience of our Lord as salvation. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Special Music Processional, from Canticles in Candlelight Joseph A. Martin 10

*Gospel Mark 1:1-8 The beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. As it is written in the prophet Isaiah, See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way; the voice of one crying out in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight, John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was clothed with camel s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. He proclaimed, The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you O Christ. Sermon *Hymn Pr. Craig Jan-McMahon #10 On Jordan s Bank the Baptist s Cry 11

Pastoral Prayer The Lord s Prayer Offering Our Gifts Responding to the Good News Invitation The Lord will give what is good, and our land will yield its increase. May your righteousness go before God and prepare a pathway for the Lord. Let us offer our lives and labor to God and fulfill our vows to the Most High. Offertory *Doxology Praise God From whom all blessings flow, Praise God, all creatures here below; Praise God above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Prayer of Dedication Savior of the nations, come. Make your home here in us. Feed us with your love, that our faith shine ever new and our lives reveal your light. Amen. 12

Sending in Mission *Hymn of Sending #12 People, Look East *Benediction May the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord s face shine upon you and be gracious to you. May the lord look upon you with favor and give you peace. Amen *Postlude 13
