The Beginning of the Missionary Era

DIVINE APPOINTMENTS (Acts 13:1-52) This chapter is a turning point in the book of Acts. It begins the first missionary journey of Paul. This journey summarises the main features of Paul s missionary call (Acts 9:15-16). For Paul does indeed carry the gospel before Gentiles and kings (Acts 14:27; 13:7-12, 46-48; 14:8-18) and before Israel (Acts 13:14-41). Now there were in the church that was at Antioch certain prophets and teachers; as Barnabas, and Simeon that was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen, which had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them. (v-2) Antioch now becomes the centre from which the work spreads to the ends of the earth. Before this church could become a great missionary sending Church it is notable that it had to be well taught in doctrine. The church must be saturated in the word of God or it will produce carnality. They were so well known for their Christo-centric beliefs that they were named Christians by the locals. In Acts 11:26, we see that Paul and Barnabas taught there a whole year. This chapter shows this church to be a model church to emulate in many different ways. We see this mission progressing triumphantly, even over the forces of darkness. Manaen, Lucius and Simeon were not apostles and the designation prophets and teachers is highlighting their responsibility. This was a church with a plurality of spiritual leadership. The expression, ministered is in the imperfect tense indicating that they continued to engaged in divine service such as prayer as they fasted. In Acts 6:4 the apostles wanted to give themselves to this. Leaders need to spend time ministering to the Lord rather than just to the people. There was clearly a serious burden in the Antioch church that they had to forego food was it because they wanted to do some work for the Lord? We do not know how the Holy Spirit spoke but it may have been through these prophets through Divine revelation. This was a church under the control of the Holy Spirit. Doors will open when you are serving the Lord faithfully. And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away. So they, being sent forth by the Holy Ghost, departed unto Seleucia; and from thence they sailed to Cyprus. (v3-4) This laying on of hands was not to ordain them to their office as both men had already preached before. Indeed, Paul was directly commissioned by God (Gal. 1: 1). However, it provides a good pattern of the call of the Holy Spirit working with the confirmation, identification, and support of the church. Prayer and the leading of the Holy Spirit led this move. As A.B. Simpson commented, Prayer is the mighty engine that is to move the missionary work. The church didn t send out these men, So they, being sent forth by the Holy Ghost. You cannot succeed in the ministry unless you are called and sent by God. The church s role (and the Bible College) is only to recognise the calling, encourage it, and support those who are called. Barnabas and Saul were the best leaders Antioch had, but the members willingly set them apart when the God called. Churches should always be willing to sacrifice their very best to evangelise the lost. This is a wonderful picture of the unity and harmony of the whole church being led by the Spirit. One commentator said, www.oldfaith.wordpress.com 1

Compared with this voyage the results and consequences of the voyages of Columbus, Vasco de Gamma, Magellan, and the Vikings were of little consequence for this was the commencement of the Christian odyssey. For the gospel had been preached in Judea and Samaria and not it's to be proclaimed in the uttermost part of the earth.carried with it a man and an idea, which were to affect the destinies of the human race. Paul s First Missionary Journey, with Barnabas to Cyprus and Asia Minor (AD 46-48) And when they were at Salamis, they preached the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews: and they had also John to their minister. And when they had gone through the isle unto Paphos, they found a certain sorcerer, a false prophet, a Jew, whose name was Barjesus: Which was with the deputy of the country, Sergius Paulus, a prudent man; who called for Barnabas and Saul, and desired to hear the word of God. (v5-7) Salamis was the principal city and seaport of Cyprus and would have had many synagogues being so adjacent to Judea. We are not told they were explicitly commanded to go there by the Spirit. Possibly, they headed toward where they knew was a need in Cyprus and trusted God to govern and lead the choice, and to bring out of it what He desires. God had given the general, broad plan, but He did not give the particulars. One writer put it well, As far as we know, the Spirit did not tell them to go to Cyprus. The Spirit told them to move out, but the missionaries, while praying and using common sense, decided where to go. When they prayed and thought about the missionary plan, it seemed logical to start in Cyprus since Barnabas and others at Antioch had so many natural contacts on the island of Cyprus. These missionaries went forth in great confidence, believing that God was in the choice of going to Cyprus, and that He would bless their efforts. This is a beautiful picture of God's sovereignty and man s responsibility at work. God called and sent the missionaries out, promising them blessing, and the missionaries prayed and went where they felt they had natural contacts, trusting God for blessing. www.oldfaith.wordpress.com 2

John Mark is called a minister here meaning an under-rower, subordinate rower in Greek. He was not to be the main speaker but to take care of the administration. Maybe John Mark started doing this voluntarily and they took this as evidence that he was suited for this purpose and would be useful. Often Paul sailed and went past towns and villages without preaching to them. We must be led of the Lord in evangelism. He went from Salamis in the East to Paphos in the West without apparently stopping anywhere in between. Even the Lord Jesus Christ did not talk to everyone. Paphos was a city at the western extremity of the island of Cyprus. It was famous for its immorality, which was particularly associated with the idolatry to the goddess Venus who was said to have been born there. A great temple was erected to Venus there. The Holy Spirit was working to prepare the hearts of one of the most prominent men of that area. A Roman consul named Sergius Paulus. He was famous as a prudent man or one known for his wisdom and caution. He wasn t interested in magic, entertainment (certainly there was plenty of that already) but he wanted to hear from God, who called for Barnabas and Saul, and desired to hear the word of God. But Elymas the sorcerer (for so is his name by interpretation) withstood them, seeking to turn away the deputy from the faith. (v8) Every fresh move of God will have the resistance of the devil. Here, Satan had his man, Elymas Bar-Jesus to fight against the gospel in order to blind the deputy from the faith. Elymas is an Arabic word meaning the sorcerer and his Hebrew name Bar-Jesus has the meaning son of Jesus or son of salvation. As the self-declared son of Jesus, this man was pretending to be the follower of Jesus. He cleverly mixed black magic with Christianity to appeal to all sides. Here is certainly parallel to the account of Simon of Samaria in chapter 8. Both were Jewish and were demon-possessed mediums. MacArthur points out, Whenever the gospel moved into a territory, in the book of Acts so far, immediately there s demonic activity on a face-to-face confrontation. The gospel moved into Samaria and who s the first guy they met? Simon the sorcerer, demon possessed. The gospel www.oldfaith.wordpress.com 3

moved into Macedonia in the book of Acts the first person they met was a demonpossessed damsel. Bang. The gospel moved here into Cyprus Bar-jesus. Whenever God begins to conqueror new territory Satan moves in to resist. Elymas knew his lucrative position and influence was over if Sergius Paulus got saved. Doubtless, that s what was in his heart when he opposed Paul and Barnabas. Then Saul, (who also is called Paul,) filled with the Holy Ghost, set his eyes on him. And said, O full of all subtilty and all mischief, thou child of the devil, thou enemy of all righteousness, wilt thou not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord? And now, behold, the hand of the Lord is upon thee, and thou shalt be blind, not seeing the sun for a season. And immediately there fell on him a mist and a darkness; and he went about seeking some to lead him by the hand. Then the deputy, when he saw what was done, believed, being astonished at the doctrine of the Lord. (v9-12) We must be prepared to do spiritual battle in order to win souls for Christ (Eph. 6:12; 1 Peter 5:8). Paul did not go looking for the devil but when he faced him he confronted his foe head on. However, he did this when filled with the Spirit, not in his own strength. Paul set his eyes on him and was not intimidated. This is the first place where we see Saul becoming Paul and assuming the leadership of the apostolic mission. This is also the first time Paul used the signgifts of the first century Apostles. Paul describes this man in a number of ways: (a) all subtlety (b) mischief - or reckless in Greek (c) child of the devil this is a play on words as his name was son of salvation. (d) enemy of all righteousness (e) does not cease to pervert This darkness is always the final manifestation of the occult lifestyle. It is amazing that this man never repented despite all the signs given to him. This was a battle ultimately for the soul of this man. Satan is clever enough to know that if he can control powerful people of influence you can control most of those under them. God used this miracle to affirm the gospel message Paul preached, Then the deputy, when he saw what was done, believed, being astonished at the doctrine of the Lord. Archaelogy and church tradition reveals that Sergius Paulus and his family became devout and prominent Christians in that time. Now when Paul and his company loosed from Paphos, they came to Perga in Pamphylia: and John departing from them returned to Jerusalem. (v13) The miracle and the salvation of Sergius Paulus was a pivotal moment in the ministry of the Apostle Paul. Saul even took the name Paul or Paulus as his name. From this moment, Paul s apostolic authority becomes more prominent and the leadership seems to shift from Barnabas to Paul. The expression Paul and his company means literally, those around Paul, which is an idiomatic Hellenistic phrase indicating a change in leadership. Satan lost the battle over Elymas but he now attacks the mission from within with the departure of John Mark. The Holy Spirit often sends missionaries in teams, so they can www.oldfaith.wordpress.com 4

encourage, exhort and uphold one another. We are not explicitly told the reasons why John Mark went back. Did he go back later because they were getting into too much Gentile territory? Had the romance of mission work had worn off as they now faced the treacherous Taurus Mountains? Did he miss his family? Was he afraid of the resistance or was he jealous that Paul was more prominent than his uncle now? The shift in leadership from Barnabas to Paul suggested by Luke s account may be significant as in the next sentence, we read of John Mark returning to Jerusalem. There is no indication that the Holy Spirit called John Mark to serve in this ministry. He called only Paul and Barnabas and they decided to bring John Mark as a helper. That may well have been the root problem he wasn t called by God. John Mark does not appear to have had a good reason to return and Paul remembered this later. The Holy Spirit does not reveal why he went back possibly because he became profitable in the ministry later in life (2 Tim. 4:11). However, it must have been something serious for Paul to take such a stand on the issue. It is edifying to see that Mark s weakness was not terminal and he matured to become a fine worker for the NT Church. D. L. Moody said, If you don t go to work for the Lord because you re afraid of making mistakes, you will probably make the greatest mistake of your life that of doing nothing. But when they departed from Perga, they came to Antioch in Pisidia, and went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and sat down. And after the reading of the law and the prophets the rulers of the synagogue sent unto them, saying, Ye men and brethren, if ye have any word of exhortation for the people, say on. Then Paul stood up, and beckoning with his hand said, Men of Israel, and ye that fear God, give audience. (v14-16) This was no easy journey from Perga to Antioch as Antioch of Pisidia was 3600 feet high on a plateau up on the Taurus Mountains a hundred miles from Perga. These were dangerous mountain passes with robbers and wild animals. Some believe Paul did not preach at Perga because he may have been sick in lowland from malaria (Gal. 4:13). As Paul s standard custom was, he went straight to the synagogue first to bring the gospel to the Jews. These officials supervised the synagogue service maintaining order and would elect participants. According to the custom of the synagogue, as strangers they were invited to speak. In the synagogue when a man stood up it was a sign of his authority. The God of this people of Israel chose our fathers, and exalted the people when they dwelt as strangers in the land of Egypt, and with an high arm brought he them out of it. And about the time of forty years suffered he their manners in the wilderness. And when he had destroyed seven nations in the land of Chanaan, he divided their land to them by lot. And after that he gave unto them judges about the space of four hundred and fifty years, until Samuel the prophet. And afterward they desired a king: and God gave unto them Saul the son of Cis, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, by the space of forty years. And when he had removed him, he raised up unto them David to be their king; to whom also he gave their testimony, and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfil all my will. Of this man's seed hath God according to his promise raised unto Israel a Saviour, Jesus: When John had first preached before his coming the baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel. And as John fulfilled his course, he said, Whom think ye that I am? I am not he. But, behold, there cometh one after me, whose shoes of his feet I am not worthy to loose. Men and brethren, children of the stock of Abraham, and whosoever among you feareth God, to you is the word of this salvation sent. For they that dwell at Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they knew him not, nor yet the voices of the prophets which are read every sabbath day, they have fulfilled them in condemning him. And though they found no cause of death in him, yet www.oldfaith.wordpress.com 5

desired they Pilate that he should be slain. And when they had fulfilled all that was written of him, they took him down from the tree, and laid him in a sepulchre. But God raised him from the dead: And he was seen many days of them which came up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are his witnesses unto the people. And we declare unto you glad tidings, how that the promise which was made unto the fathers, God hath fulfilled the same unto us their children, in that he hath raised up Jesus again; as it is also written in the second psalm, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee. And as concerning that he raised him up from the dead, now no more to return to corruption, he said on this wise, I will give you the sure mercies of David. Wherefore he saith also in another psalm, Thou shalt not suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell on sleep, and was laid unto his fathers, and saw corruption: But he, whom God raised again, saw no corruption. Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins: And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses. Beware therefore, lest that come upon you, which is spoken of in the prophets; Behold, ye despisers, and wonder, and perish: for I work a work in your days, a work which ye shall in no wise believe, though a man declare it unto you. (v17-41) This was Paul s first recorded sermon in the Book of Acts. It is remarkably similar in style and content to that of Stephen s. Evidently this had never left Saul. In this message, we see the importance of both history and prophecy. Like all great preachers, Paul begins his message with God. MacArthur points out, Now, God is the first of the two main characters in the sermon. Paul is not a character in his own sermon. There are two, God and Jesus. God is the background character, but God really dominates this thing. For example, in verse 17, God chose, God exalted, God brought out. In verse 18, God bore. Verse 19, God destroyed and God divided. Verse 20, God gave. Verse 21, God gave. Verse 22, God removed, God raised, and God gave testimony. Verse 23, God raised. Verse 30, God raised. Verse 37, God raised. Verse 33, God fulfilled. Etc., etc. God is a main character. www.oldfaith.wordpress.com 6

Paul unfolds Christ as the culmination of history, the fulfilment of prophecy, and the Saviour of sinners. He deals with the OT Scriptures by drawing from Numbers v18, Joshua v19, Judges v20 and 1 Sam v21. In v26 he addresses two groups of people: (1) Jews stock of Abraham (2) Gentile Proselytes those who feared God We are going to find both of these in the Book of Acts hearing the gospel. In v27 Paul points out that the OT prophecies are fulfilled in Christ, For they that dwell at Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they knew him not, nor yet the voices of the prophets which are read every sabbath day, they have fulfilled them in condemning him. Paul then draws from 5 OT passages in the next section Psalm 2:7 (v33), Isaiah 55:3 (v34), Psalm 16:10 (v35), Hab. 1:5 (v41) and Isaiah 49:6 (v42). From the OT Scriptures Paul points out this is good news for all, And we declare unto you glad tidings, how that the promise which was made unto the fathers. In every gospel message, there must be an invitation to trust in Christ for forgiveness of sins, Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins: And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses. Forgiveness is not found in the keeping of the law or a building like the temple or a church but in a Person Christ. That s why Paul emphasises it is through this man and by him all that believe are justified from all things. And when the Jews were gone out of the synagogue, the Gentiles besought that these words might be preached to them the next sabbath. Now when the congregation was broken up, many of the Jews and religious proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas: who, speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace of God. (v42-43) The preaching of the pure gospel will always divide. Many of the Jews must have been offended by Paul s statement that the law cannot save you, And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses. It would offend their Jewish pride, especially in front of the Gentiles. And the next sabbath day came almost the whole city together to hear the word of God. But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy, and spake against those things which were spoken by Paul, contradicting and blaspheming. (v44-45) Although the Jews despised the Gentiles, they were determined also that it should not be preached to Gentiles. The depravity of the human heart is deep. This word contradicting is in the imperfect tense indicating a continuous action. These unrepentant Jews were desperate to prevent the Gentiles repenting of their sins and embracing Christ. Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you: but seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles. For so hath the Lord commanded us, saying, I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles, that thou shouldest be for salvation unto the ends of the earth. (v46-47) The sad irony is Messiah s people pushing the Messiah away after hundreds of years of waiting for Him. Another irony is that they were so proud of their Judaism yet their own Jewish www.oldfaith.wordpress.com 7

Prophets state that Messiah was sent to be a light to the Gentiles nations for salvation. This is the turning point in Paul s ministry and they boldly declare these people are unworthy of everlasting life. A tragic reality of our depraved nature is that religion can make us blind to the true way of salvation. Even knowing great swathes of the Bible can leave us without understanding of the truth of the gospel. And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of the Lord: and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed. And the word of the Lord was published throughout all the region. (v48-49) The same Word of God can condemn one man and comfort another. The word ordained is tasso, properly means to place - that is, to place in a certain rank or order. Its meaning is derived from arranging or disposing a body of soldiers in regular military order. There has been much difference of opinion in regard to this expression. However, we need to note the order as it does not say as many as believed were ordained to eternal life. Luke highlights this as we need to understand the doctrine of election if you are going to engage in the work of evangelism. You cannot go out believing that you can persuade a man with your natural gifts to believe in Christ. One writer observed, If you go out thinking that salvation depends on man s decision, you have no guarantee that anyone will decide to trust in Christ. In fact, you have the Bible s guarantee that none will trust in Christ, because it plainly states that none seek after God of their own free will (Rom. 3:11). None come to Jesus unless the Father draws them (John 6:44). Satan has blinded their minds (2 Cor. 4:4) and holds them captive to do his will (2 Tim. 2:26). And, the people you are trying to convince to trust in Christ are dead in their sins (Eph. 2:1). The rejection of the Jews resulted in a great revival amongst the Gentiles. This pattern will continue until the end times, when the veil is lifted from the Jews in a mighty revival (Zechariah 12:10; Romans 11:25-31; 2 Cor. 3:12-16) But the Jews stirred up the devout and honourable women, and the chief men of the city, and raised persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them out of their coasts. But they shook off the dust of their feet against them, and came unto Iconium. And the disciples were filled with joy, and with the Holy Ghost. (v50-52) This is not a new concept in Acts. In Matthew 10:14, Mark 6:11, Luke 10:10-11 we read of this. The Jews historically did this when the exited Gentile territory. The Jews were so prejudiced against Samaritans they would not even walk on the same side of the road. Therefore, Paul and Barnabas regarded the Christ-rejecting Jews the same way Jews did to the Gentiles. www.oldfaith.wordpress.com 8
