St Peder s Evangelical Lutheran Church 4600 E 42nd St. Minneapolis, MN 55406 (612) 722-8000 June/July 2016 Issue 6 The Messenger Announcing... Congregational Meeting on Sunday, June 12, 2016 IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING WORSHIP (COFFEE WILL FOLLOW THE MEETING) Purpose: To approve Council s recommendation to accept bid to re-do the flat roof over 1965 building addition (education wing and east end of building) so the new roof can be completed this season. All confirmed members and voting members are invited to attend. Thank you for participating in this decision making process! - St Peder s Church Council FOR ALL THE SAINTS We give thanks to God for the life of Red (Merwin) Dreher, whose Memorial Service was at St Peder s on May 7. Red was a long-time member of the congregation and for many years was the person responsible for decorating the chancel for Christmas and Easter every year. Even when Red could no longer accomplish that task himself, he directed the work from the front pew! A generous, kind-hearted man with a quick wit, Red will be missed. We entrust him to God s eternal embrace, and remember his niece Connie and his other family members and friends in our prayers. A Word from Pastor Julie Dear Partners in Ministry, As I announced in worship on May 22, my new knee and I are getting well acquainted! Surgery on April 19 went very well and I received excellent care from the nurses, doctors, and therapists at Woodwinds Hospital in Woodbury. I left the hospital two days after my knee replacement, with an A+ in physical therapy! Therapy continues a couple of times a week until the first week of June - and while it s been a work-out, all has gone well. I was able to spend a couple of weeks at my mother s as I began my rehab and she took great care of me, as did my sister and nieces. Lucy (my 13-year old black Lab) and I were glad to get back home and eventually start driving and becoming more independent. This process of getting a new knee couldn t have gone better and I m so thankful for all the prayers and support from you, my St Peder s family. Your cards and well-wishes were such day brighteners! And, I was grateful, too, for a nice visit from Pastor Jan while I was in the hospital. While I m not 100% yet, I m getting there! I still rely on my cane somewhat and standing in one place for a time is challenging, but I m developing more stamina as time goes by and the healing process continues. Thanks to Pastor Jan Bornhoft for providing pastoral leadership while I was away and to the staff who stepped in to help out. Blessings to you all as we enter another summer season. May you be presented with opportunities for renewal and refreshment in these coming months! Peace be with you, Pastor Julie Ebbesen JUNE WORSHIP SCHEDULE June 5 9:00 am Worship with Holy Communion June 12 9 am Worship, 10 am Congregational Meeting June 19 9 am Courtyard Worship June 26 9 am worship, 10:30 am Mission Partners Worship at Trinity Riverside, lunch after the service 2 JOIN US FOR WORSHIP IN THE COURTYARD! Our summer worship schedule has begun, so it will soon be time for our monthly outdoor worship Sundays! This year, we ll worship in the courtyard on June 19, July 17, and August 21. We ll set-up some chairs, but if you d like to bring your own, please do. If the weather isn t cooperating, we ll be inside as usual. If you d like to help set-up for worship on any of those Sundays, simply show up about 8:30 and we ll put you to work! Your help is greatly appreciated.

June 1st is our last Pub Theology of the year! We'll stick with our 7pm start time. Allison and Michael O'Day have graciously invited us to come to their place for a year end potluck celebration! If you are planning on coming, please RSVP by emailing or calling Shannon (faithformation@stpeders.org) and let him know what you'll be contributing. JULY WORSHIP SCHEDULE July 3 9:00 am Worship with Holy Communion GATHER BIBLE STUDY GATHER BIBLE STUDY DOES NOT MEET DUR- ING THE MONTHS OF JUNE, JULY, AND AU- GUST. WE WILL START AGAIN IN SEPTEMBER. July 10 9 am Worship, 10 am Congregational Meeting July 17 9 am Courtyard Worship July 24 9 am worship July 24 9 am worship MISSION PARTNER SUNDAY JUNE 26! Mark your calendars and instead of worshiping at St Peder s, come to Augsburg College Chapel and be a part of Mission Partner Sunday! Worship with Holy Communion is at 10:30 and Bishop Anne Svennungsen will be the preacher for the day as we worship together with Trinity/Riverside, Mt Olivet/Plymouth, and Nokomis Heights Lutheran Churches. Lunch follows the worship service, and we ll dine on Ethiopian food catered from the West Bank restaurant Dilla s. There is no charge for lunch. Parking is a challenge in the summer at Augsburg especially with construction. Consider car-pooling with other members! We ll get more information closer to the date about parking availability at Augsburg. Parking alternatives are the Fairview parking ramp almost directly across Riverside from the Chapel. There are entrances for that lot off of 23rd and 24th Avenues. There is a U parking ramp on 20th Ave. just one block north of Trinity s office on 20th and Riverside. There are 16 slots in Trinity s lot. And there are neighborhood streets, but people should make sure they do not park in a 1-hour zone. The parking patrol will no doubt be out and about. And, there are always bikes, buses, and LRT. 3

My favorite St. Peder's memory is the time I spent making new friends and connecting with old ones on church retreats 4

A note from Shannon... As we enter into summer our pace changes. We shift from weekly Sunday School to more special events. These will be opportunities to keep our connections strong and spend even more time together. We always imagine that the summer will be a time of calm and reflection but in my experience it turns into a different kind of busy. It requires intentional effort to slow down, to reflect, and to make sure that you're taking time to rest and recharge. I encourage you to find time as a family to connect, to share experiences, to rest. Shannon Director of Faith Formation & Outreach PEACE CAMP IS COMING August 2016 THE DATE OF PEACE CAMP HAS CHANGED FROM JUNE TO AUGUST 2016. PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR THE NEW DATE!
