SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER MAY 6, 2018 From Our Pastor Dear Parishioners, The month of May is traditionally dedicated to the Devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. During this month people do different spiritual exercises to show their reverence to Mary. May Crowning, Rosary Procession and Family Rosary are a few among the many spiritual practices. This month at Ascension we have a program entitled, A Biblical Walk with Mary. Many times people ask the question, why do we pray to Mary? The best answer I have ever heard was from a stranger. I was flying from Dubai to Chicago. The person sitting next to me was praying the rosary. Pretending that I didn t know anything about the rosary I asked her, Are you praying? Yes, I am praying to Mother Mary, she replied. Why do you pray to a human person? Don t we pray to God?, I asked her. Mary is not simply a human person. She is full of grace. Because she is full of grace she is with God who is grace itself. Therefore, Mary is an easy path to God, she replied. Mary is Jesus gift to us. Before his sacrificial death on the cross, Jesus said to John, who was at the foot of the cross, This is your Mother. Mary became the mother of the Church. Jesus denied the requests of his disciples a few times. However, he never denied the request of his mother. At Canaan he simply yielded to the request of His mother. Because Mary found favor with God, her place in the economy of salvation is unique. Her power of intercession is unquestionable. At different apparitions of Mary, she reassured the world of her unfailing intercession before her Son for the world. An easy way to show our devotion to Mary and pray for her intercession is praying the rosary. If you cannot say the full rosary, try to pray at least one decade of the rosary together as a family. The result will be amazing. Peter was mailing wedding invitations for his brother. Don t forget to invite Mother Mary. We may need her in case we run out of food, Peter s little daughter told him. Blessings, Fr. Jose

If you are concerned about family who are far from Jesus, you are not alone. Ascension of Our Lord Parish invites you to come and pray with fellow friends who wish to quench Jesus s thirst for souls. Every soul is precious to Jesus. I THIRST Prayer Group will meet Friday mornings, beginning June 1st at 10:00 a.m. in The Founders Foyer. The month of June is traditionally dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The Sacred Heart represents Jesus s love for all people, and our devotion to it is an expression of our faith in His Love and Mercy. From the Director of Parish Ministries & Religious Education Registration information for the 2018-19 school year is currently underway. If you have a child that was not registered in the program and will need to be, please call the Religious Education Office to setup a time to register. A copy of your child s/ren baptismal certificate will be needed if that Sacrament took place at another parish. Registration information can also be found on the parish website under Religious Education as well as on the brochure rack outside of Church and in the parish office. Need Your Input! Below are a few questions for all to think about as I look to expand further our parish ministries. Please feel free to e-mail, phone, or send a note with your response. #1. Are you interested in a parish book club? This club would meet monthly and would include a book discussion as well as some light snacks? Daytime meeting or evening? #2. Is there a need to offer a parish grief support group? Grief exists in many different ways. From the death of a family member, to the loss of a job, to the loss of friendship, grief exists all around us. Would you be interested in a seven week session? #3. What topics for future adult education would be of interest to you? #4. Would there be any interest in starting a ministry that makes prayer blankets for those in need? Our A Biblical Walk with Mary 5-week course is underway! Enrollment in the afternoon session is at 40 and the evening session is at 20!
Around the Diocese and Parish Neighborhood HAVE YOU EVER SHOPPED AT A THRIFT STORE? Most shoppers look for sales or the best/lowest prices when buying products/services that they want or need. But the question remains, have you ever shopped at a Thrift Store? You have all heard of Goodwill Stores scattered throughout our local communities. But have you heard about the SIX Thrift Stores operated by the St. Vincent de Paul Society in the Diocese of Joliet? Yes, we operate stores where anyone can purchase small household and office furniture and equipment, appliances, tools, kitchenware, jewelry, purses, luggage, sports equipment, toys, and all types of shoes and clothing many with their original store tags still in place AND all selling at well below commercial prices. Goodwill Stores are now operated by a for profit corporation with all proceeds going to two millionaire brothers while the St. Vincent de Paul stores are all managed by Society volunteers as a not-forprofit entity. The products on sale are all donated by people like you who participated in our recent Truck Collection on our parish parking lot and companies that donate items to us from their inventories. Did you know we have a St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store near here which is open seven days a week in Addison, Illinois, at 90 West Lake Street? It is located in the center of a great shopping area just west of Addison Road. If you wish, you can call them in advance at 630-628- 9008 and bring any goods you wish to donate to them at the same time. Give it a shot and see all the things a Thrift Store can offer at very low cost. Go shopping on us and for us. All proceeds help us help the poor. Pentecost Sunday Celebration May 20, 2018 Sacred Heart, St. Pius X, Christ the King, Ascension of our Lord, St. Alexander, St. John the Apostle, Immaculate Conception, Visitation, Mary Queen of Heaven, St. Alexis, St. Charles Borromeo, St. Philip, St. Joseph, St. Peter, Holy Ghost, and St. Andrew Kim The members of all of the 16 parishes in the Eastern DuPage Deanery in the Diocese of Joliet are invited to join in the celebration of the coming of the Holy Spirit. The sacred Easter season officially comes to an end on the Solemnity of Pentecost, May 20th. All of us are called to give witness to the presence of the Spirit in our lives. You are especially invited on this day to consider how you will show the guidance of the Holy Spirit in your life. Please consider making a difference, as we celebrate the birthday of the church, by the ways in which we proclaim that we are Christ s followers. Invite a friend or neighbor to come to church with you! Go out of your way to encourage someone to come to Mass that perhaps does not regularly attend! All day on May 20th, wear the colors of the Holy Spirit. Red, Yellow, and Orange clothing can be outward reminders of the presence of the Spirit. Congratulate others, when you see them dressed this way, for proclaiming the presence of the Spirit! Show that you are filled with the Holy Spirit in any way you can by reaching out to a stranger or a needy person. Talk to others after Mass that you normally don t talk to! Pray with thanks for the gifts of the Holy Spirit and think about how important they are in your life!
