(17) For if I do this thing willingly, I have a reward: but if against my will, a dispensation of the gospel is committed unto me. (18) What is my reward then? Verily that, when I preach the gospel, I may make the gospel of Christ without charge, that I abuse not my power in the gospel. (19) For though I be free from all men, yet have I made myself servant unto all, that I might gain the more. (20) And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain them that are under the law; (21) To them that are without law, as without law, (being not without law to God, but under the law to Christ,) that I might gain them that are without law. (22) To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some. (23) And this I do for the gospel's sake, that I might be partaker thereof with you. EVANGELISM 2018 1
Introduction a. To become all things to all men does not mean we ought to compromise our God-given convictions. b. Winning souls is important, but it should never be at the expense of truth. c. We have the liberty to adjust our standards as long as they do not violate Biblical truths. d. The purpose of becoming all things to all men is to lead them to the knowledge of the truth of the Gospel. 1 Corinthians 9:22-23 I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some. (23) And this I do for the gospel's sake, that I might be partaker thereof with you. A. The Methods a. Methods should never take the place of the Holy-Spirit and Prayer. However, methods are tools which God is able to use as long they do not contradict God s Word. Each method should result in one thing, sharing the glorious gospel with others. John 6:44 No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day. b. There are three ways in which God draws people: o By the Preaching of the Cross John 12:32-33 o By the Power of the Holy Spirit John 16:7-8 o By the Petitioned Prayer 2 Timothy 2:1-4 AW. Tozer: The temptation to modify the teachings of Christ so that larger numbers will accept Him is so popular in this day of speed, size, noise, and crowds. But if we know what is good for us, we ll resist it with every power at our command. To yield can only result in a weak and anemic Christianity in this generation, and death and desolation in the next. The crowds-at-any-price mania has taken a firm grip on Christianity and is the motivating power back of the shockingly high percentage of all religious activity. Gypsy Smith: I am afraid that in our zeal to get people into the Church we have lowered the standard. We have been more anxious about counting heads than hearts. In order to draw larger numbers, we have compromised and lost. EVANGELISM 2018 2
1. Romans Road Romans 3:10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; a. Explain what the penalty of sin is. o The curse of death is upon us. (Death is a result of sin) o Explain the second death. (Revelation 21:8) Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Romans 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. c. 2. John 3:16-18, 36 John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. a. Explain the purpose of the coming of Christ. o Why did God have to give his Son? (Die for Sinners; Will not Perish, explain our sin problem) o What does it mean to be saved? (Sin brings forth death) o Who is the World referring to? (Are you part of the World?) o Who is the whosoever referring to? (Are you included?) o What is the promise that God gives to us? o The Passage is referring to being born again John 3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. John 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him. b. Explain their responsibility to receive Christ. o Explain the kind of Believing God is looking for: (Faith & Repentance) o What happens if they reject Christ? 3. Gospel Tracts a. Gospel tracts are a very important part of evangelism. They are a good way to publish the Gospel. Isaiah 52:7 How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth! o Helps guide you in presenting the Gospel. Make sure you are familiar with the tract first. o Use the front of the tract to provoke conversation. o Helps identify key verses while you present the Gospel. o They have something to reflect upon in their own time. o Has contact details for them to know more. o Do not be stingy when it comes to purchasing Gospel tracts. o Do not be wasteful, make sure you keep them in good condition. b. Keep tracts on you at all times o Be ready to hand out tracts everywhere you go. o If you are in a multicultural area, carry tracts in different languages. o Carry different tracts on you all the time. (You might meet the same person again) c. Make sure you have good Gospel tracts o Make sure it presents the Gospel clearly. o Make sure it is easy to read and follow. o Define Biblical terms for them to understand. Nehemiah 8:8 So they read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading. Acts 8:30-31 And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest? vs 31 And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him. EVANGELISM 2018 5
4. The Law a. The Law is usually presented to a self-righteous or religious person. Psalm 19:7 The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple. b. The purpose of the Law is to get a person lost. The Law shows the holiness of God and the sinfulness of man. Romans 7:7 What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet. c. The purpose of the law is to prepare the heart for the Gospel. The Law is to show a person their need of a Saviour. We must not give people the impression that they need to keep the law to be saved. Galatians 3:24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. d. The Law is not to be used to condemn a person, but rather it should be used to give a person hope. We must have a good balance. Grace and Truth. CH Spurgeon: Men are frightened into Hell, but not into Heaven. Men are sometimes driven to Sinai by powerful preaching. Far be it from us to condemn the use of the Law of God, for, the Law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, but if you want to get a man to Christ, the best way is to bring Christ to the man! e. After using the Law, you can either use the Romans Road or John 3:16 to explain the Gospel. EVANGELISM 2018 6
5. Testimony a. Sharing a Testimony is one of the most effective ways to share the Gospel. Nobody can argue with your testimony. We have all been impacted by the testimony of Jesus Christ. His testimony is the Gospel lived; our testimony is the Gospel received. b. A testimony is testifying about what the Lord has done in a person s life. It would be like a person that stands in court to be a witness, declaring the whole truth of the matter. In this case, the matter is God s goodness and mercy. c. Blessing of sharing your testimony o Opportunity to give thanks and praise God amongst others Psalm 35:18 I will give thee thanks in the great congregation: I will praise thee among much people. o Opportunity to tell others about Jesus Christ - John 4:28-29 The Samaritan Woman - Luke 2:26-28 Anna, the Widow Woman - Mark 5:18-20 The Demon Possessed Man Mark 5:18-20 And when he was come into the ship, he that had been possessed with the devil prayed him that he might be with him. (19) Howbeit Jesus suffered him not, but saith unto him, Go home to thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee, and hath had compassion on thee. (20) And he departed, and began to publish in Decapolis how great things Jesus had done for him: and all men did marvel. EVANGELISM 2018 7
d. Outline of a Testimony o Past What was your life like before you knew the Lord? o Conversion What were the events that took place leading to your conversion? What happened that day? o Present What is your life like now with the Lord? Assurance of eternal destiny. Matthew 10:18 And ye shall be brought before governors and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them and the Gentiles. e. The Apostle Paul stood before governors, kings, and others giving his testimony. A testimony is both encouraging and powerful do not underestimate the power of a living testimony. f. Apostle Paul s Testimony o Acts 26:1-3 Paul stands before the King. o Acts 26:4-12 Paul gives the background of his up-bringing. o Acts 26:13-18 Paul explains his conversion. o Acts 26:19-23 Paul shares his Heavenly calling. o Acts 26:24-31 The impact of a testimony. o Acts 26:24-27 Many may mock you and might call you names. o Acts 26 28-31 Many will be challenged by your testimony, and will consider the truth. g. Lazarus - a living Testimony John 12:9-10 Much people of the Jews therefore knew that he was there: and they came not for Jesus' sake only, but that they might see Lazarus also, whom he had raised from the dead. vs.10 But the chief priests consulted that they might put Lazarus also to death; Why did they desire to kill both the Saviour and Lazarus? John 12:11 Because that by reason of him many of the Jews went away, and believed on Jesus. EVANGELISM 2018 9
