I am writing these words from the lobby of a Best Western Hotel toward the tail end of a family vacation- a BIG family vacation. In total there are 11 of us spending this week together; with me are Amber, my sisters and their significant others, and all of our children. And as everyone knows, constant togetherness, while rewarding, can also be extremely challenging. I ve spent some time this week reflecting on this instruction from Paul s letter to the Ephesians: Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honor your father and mother - which is the first commandment with a promise- so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth. Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord. (NIV) As I am cooped up with five children, I really appreciate Paul s reinforcement of the 5 th commandment. Our children s excellent behavior so far during this trip has kept us from collectively slipping over the precipice into a pit of unbridled familial chaos. But on the other hand, exasperating my child may honestly be my favorite pastime. I have been known to weave through parked cars in the middle school pick-up lane riding a razor scooter and carrying a second scooter strapped to my back. The other parents unanimously agreed that this stunt was hilarious. My daughter turned Wolfpack red as she scooted home past her middle school girlfriends. My child endures daily puns (or dad jokes, as she calls them) and a certain pair of plaid pants I m never supposed to wear out of the house again. I can exasperate a teen daughter with the best of them. All fun aside, Paul s most crucial teaching is certainly that we should bring our children up to know and follow the Lord. As I learn what it means to be a father, I am continually inspired by the ways in which I see so many of you living Paul s teaching: faithfully leading your children to worship and Sunday School, demonstrating true love of God and neighbor, and reminding them again and again that they are children of a Heavenly Father. As you spend these last, precious summer days together, may you continue in God s good work! Yours in Christ, Pastor Steve
REGULAR WORSHIP SCHEDULE We return to our regular worship schedule August 6, and will continue as normal, with both worship services being held in their respective worship areas. Praise & Worship at 8:30am in the Joyner Chapel, Traditional Worship at 11:00am in the Sanctuary, and Sunday School at 10:00 in the Education Wing, and other areas of the church. MESSAGE FROM THE SEEKERS. (Class meets in the Prayer Room in the Chapel) Beginning September 10 the class will begin a new topic. Praying the Names of God by Ann Spangler will be the resource, leading individuals into a fresh experience of exploring the Hebrew names of God. We will learn the biblical context of each name and glean a more intimate knowledge of God and His faithfulness. All adults are invited to join us. Please contact Vickie Herring 753-2084 by August 20th to reserve a book to be included in the order. Blessings to everyone as you seek the Lord. UMYF News As the summer flies by, MYF has been busy. Spreading the good word of what a great time we all had on our mission trip! We met July 9th discussing some mission work we could be doing locally and our plans for our next big adventure. Friday, July 21st, we had a lock-in with the Baptist, Presbyterian and Christian churches. We had a great crowd, and a good time was had by all. The Refuge in Ayden did their Erasing The Lines in Farmville the week of July 24th. We attended worship at the Arts Council two nights that week. Both nights were filled with music and inspiring devotions. Sunday, July 30th - Thursday, August 3rd, we will be attending Worship Under the Son at Friendship Church. This is an event the MYF looks forward to every year. In August, we will have regular meetings on the 13th and 27th. We will also have a parents meeting on the 27th at 5. Once again, we thank everyone that helped make our mission trip this summer possible.
