Next Deadline: April 15, 2018 Joyful Noiz April 2018 Pastor s Page Prayer Changes Things It s a great encouragement to know you are praying for us. That is a statement Mennonite World Conference leaders often hear as they talk to churches across the global south. Cesar Garcia, in his December newsletter, reminded me that often we in the north devalue the importance of prayer. As a friend once told me, when I lived in Ethiopia and got sick, I prayed. When I get sick here, I google! One of the special benefits of Christian community is that we can support one another in prayer. Through Lent we ve been challenged to try a prayer walk around our neighborhood or church. We ve had the opportunity to pray with our whole body as we walk the Labyrinth in Fellowship Hall. And we ve been challenged to try to pray daily, increasing our time in prayer each week. I don t know about you, but it s hard for me to be disciplined to pray in the same way each day. I ve found reading written prayers aloud sometimes is the best way to keep my mind from drifting off when I try to pray. As I think over the last month, I am encouraged by the many ways I ve seen Zion people praying for one another. I see Sunday School classes sharing prayer concerns. I ve seen email requests for prayer and regular weekly prayer before worship, with nursery school teachers before the week starts, and many other ways in between. It matters to me when I feel people are praying for me; I hope you also have had a chance to be supported in prayer. Remember that you can request prayers anytime by calling or emailing the office, Beth or me. Continued to page 3... Joyful Noiz April May 2018 2006 Page 4 4 Creati n Care Tidbits This month we have a guest author, Ilacir Piano,Jr., a volunteer with MCC International Volunteer Exchange Program, working this year at Dock Mennonite Academy and living with Amy Cummings-Leight & Ned Leight. Joyful Noiz April 2018 Page 13 First of all, you can pronounce ti as chee, like cheese, now you are ready to go! Curitiba, located in the State of Paraná, Brazil is well known for being such a unique city, but what actually makes the city so interesting? Starting with the structure, the city was built in a sustainable way, the entire city is connected via bus system. You can travel the entire city with connected buses in bus stations. Also, the buses are used by 80% of the almost 2 million people in the city. Curitiba is a Metropolitan city, which means that we have connections with our neighbor cities, for job and housing opportunities. There are an impressive number of employees who live outside of Curitiba, but they can use the bus system or drive a car and be at their job in one hour. Today we have lanes for bicycles, and you can go to work without a car or a bus if you want, the number of cars in the traffic is becoming lower because of the new ways of transportation. We also love grass! We have more than 40 parks in the city, with some lakes and shared rivers in the city. In a good weather, the parks will be full of people getting out with family, for exercise or just to have fun. What about the trash? Well, we have separated our trash for years, and the recycled items go to the recycling company, or you can donate to people who can take that, and transform the trash into money. We have a lot of places that you can sell plastic, paper, aluminum, and all sorts of stuff and it will be recycled. Because of that, there are a lot of people who work gathering these materials to sell. Normally these people are poor, and they walk in the city with a big cart gathering the resources. Also, the trucks who pick up your garbage, and the recycled trash, work for the company who is provided by the state, it s the same for the entire city and no one needs to pay for that (well this is part of our the taxes). The same happens with electricity and water supply, we have the same company for the entire city, Copel for the electricity, and Sanepar for the water treatment. We have clean energy sources. We use hydroelectric plants, using the rivers gives us enough power without using any combustion or bad stuff for the environment. Itaipu, the biggest hydroelectric plant, supplies power for the entire country and we share the energy with Paraguay, because we use the river which is between the two countries. Joyful Noiz April May 2018 2006 Page 12 12 Recipes Worth Sharing Snickerdoodle Cake Servings: 12 ================== Ingredients: Cake Ingredients: Frosting Ingredients: 1 package yellow cake mix 1/2 cup butter 1 cup milk 4 ounces cream cheese 1/4 cup butter, melted 3-1/4 cups powdered sugar 1/2 cup applesauce 3 tablespoons milk 3 large eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 teaspoon cinnamon 2 teaspoons cinnamon Instructions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix the cake ingredients and pour into three, greased round cake pans. Bake for 25 minutes (or until a toothpick stuck in the middle comes out clean). Let cool, while mixing the frosting ingredients. Turn layers out of the pans, then frost. Sprinkle a bit of cinnamon sugar on top. And enjoy! NOTE: I used a 9 x 13-inch pan. I used a can of Cream Cheese Icing. I softened it and added the cinnamon. Yvonne Detwiler Hearty Breakfast Muffins Mix: 2 cups flour 2 cups (or less) sugar 2 teaspoon baking soda 2 teaspoon cinnamon ½ teaspoon salt Add: 2 cups grated carrot ½ cup raisins ½ cup coconut Mix & add: 3 eggs 1 shredded apple 2 teaspoon vanilla 1 cup oil (or applesauce or pumpkin) Bake 350 18-25 minutes makes 2 dozen I used 1 1/2+ cup sugar, omitted the coconut (only because I didn't have it on hand) and used 1/2 cup pumpkin and 1 1/2 cup oil. Joyful Noiz April 2018 Page 5...Creati n Care Tidbits, continued from page 4. Overall, the city has a lot of new initiatives started by people who help to provide resources for charity. For example, we have one Hospital, which collects the aluminum ring of the soda cans, and with a lot of those, you can transform it into a wheelchair for someone who doesn t have one. So perhaps the idea of the city is not to find ways to sell stuff, or create new fake necessities for selling something new, but instead, look for some real necessity of the people, and try to supply that, without the government being involved sometimes. If you have the opportunity of coming to Brazil, please visit Curitiba! I m sure you will enjoy it! And I will be your guide! Note: Sunday, April 22 is Creation Care Sunday. We have a challenge for the congregation. Please consider coming to church that day by walking, riding your bicycle or car pooling with other people. We will have our new bike rack installed so there is even a place for you to put it. Make it a family affair! The Property Line Thursday, April 12 @ 4:00 p.m. Ilacir Piano,Jr Rain Date: Thursday, April 19 @ 4:00 p.m. Please join us as we work to spruce up our grounds. We will be picking up sticks, edging, and mulching beds. A pizza dinner will be served! Contact Mike Landis with any questions! Barb Musselman

Joyful Noiz April May 2018 2006 Page 6 6 Mission Moment Greetings once again from Ouagadougou. We're in the midst of the hot and dry season, missing the cooler weather of a couple of months ago, and looking forward to the rainy season, which is still a few months away. It's challenging to keep one's energy level up during the hot season, but we're thankful for our fridge, fans, air conditioners in our bedrooms, and fewer electricity cuts so far this year. Thank you for your prayers and notes of concern after the March 2 terror attacks in downtown Ouagadougou. We are thankful for fewer victims than preliminary reports anticipated. We feel safe here and haven't felt the need to change our day-to-day lives in significant ways. But we are aware that periodic attacks seem to have become part of life, so we pay more attention to our surroundings and try to be prepared for the unexpected. Pray for peace and security in Burkina Faso. Ask God to touch the hearts of those who might be tempted to use violence, that they find constructive and peaceful ways to express themselves. Bruce has a few teaching gigs over these months and will travel to Sierra Leone in April and to Nigeria in May for additional teaching assignments. The students of the International School of Ouagadougou (ISO) have begun their service projects over the past few weeks. After almost half a year of setting up the service learning program, it is heartening to see the students engage in service. Many of them desire to make a lasting contribution to their community. Please join us in praying: Pray for those who are grieving or traumatized by the events earlier this month. Pray for peace and stability in the country and in the region. Pray for Bruce as he travels later this month and pray for his teaching to be effective. Pray for Pastor Bananzaro as he travels for various projects both inside and outside the country. Pray for the students of ISO that they might develop a heart for service. Thank God for the Mennonite Congregation of Ouagadougou and for the many young adults actively engaged in the congregation. Pray that it will continue to grow and be a place of spiritual nurture. Pray that we will have health and energy over the hot season For more information, please see the newsletter posted on the missions bulletin board or contact Judy McVaugh. We couldn t do it without you! Sharing Jesus love is the essence of the church s calling and the primary reason for its existence. It has been an honor to share in God s mission with Zion Mennonite Church. We are grateful for your generosity of $38,320 in 2017. Thanks to your congregation, we continue to respond to invitations for ministry around the world. With your support we are able to expand the ministry of discipleship and encourage women church leaders in the United States and Latin America. We teach the Bible in West and Central Africa. We support racial reconciliation in the United States and South Africa. We look forward to working together with you in 2018 as we share God s love and God s word in the United States and around the world. As always, we appreciate hearing from you, our partner in ministry; whether it s a question, concern and affirmation drop me a note! Gratefully, Marisa Smucker Thank you everyone at Zion Mennonite Church for your very generous financial support, volunteer time and prayers during 2017. The children, families and school staff greatly appreciate the food which you provide through the Bean Bag Food Program. $10 goes a long way in providing encouragement to a single mother and a young child. Thank you for making a difference in their lives.
