FIRST SUNDAY AFTER CHRISTMAS DECEMBER 31, 2017 TODAY'S WORSHIP Divine Service III LSB pages 184-202 L = Liturgist * = Stand C = Congregation PRELUDE WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS *HYMN OF INVOCATION From East to West LSB 385 1. From east to west, from shore to shore Let ev ry heart awake and sing The holy child whom Mary bore, The Christ, the everlasting king. 2. Behold, the world s creator wears The form and fashion of a slave; Our very flesh our maker shares, His fallen creatures all to save. 3. For this how wondrously He wrought! A maiden in her lowly place, Became, in ways beyond all thought, The chosen vessel of His grace. 4. And while the angels in the sky Sang praise above the silent field, To shepherds poor the Lord Most High, The one great Shepherd, was revealed. *INVOCATION AND CALL TO WORSHIP L: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. BAPTISM (5:00) L: Lord, You have been our dwelling place in all generations. C: Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever You formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God. L: You turn man back to the dust, and say, Turn back, O children of men! C: For a thousand years in Your sight are but as yesterday when it is past, or as a watch in the night. L: So teach us to number our days that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom. C: Satisfy us early with Your steadfast love, L: Most merciful Heavenly Father, C: We confess that we have sinned against you, in our thoughts, words and by our actions. We have not fully placed our trust in You. Yet we are the reason You came to earth. Forgive us the sins of which we are aware, and those which are known only to You. Forgive us. Save us. Empower us to turn from our sins, to follow in Your perfect ways. Amen. *THE ABSOLUTION *THE GLORIA PATRI (Taken from LSB, page 186) C: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. *THE KYRIE *THE COLLECT OF THE DAY L: The Lord be with you. C: And with thy spirit. L: Let us pray.

THE OLD TESTAMENT READING for the first Sunday after Christmas, is from Isaiah 61:10-62:3, page 55: 10 I will greatly rejoice in the LORD; my soul shall exult in my God, for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation; he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself like a priest with a beautiful headdress, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. 11 For as the earth brings forth its sprouts, and as a garden causes what is sown in it to sprout up, so the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise to sprout up before all the nations. 1 For Zion's sake I will not keep silent, and for Jerusalem's sake I will not be quiet, until her righteousness goes forth as brightness, and her salvation as a burning torch. 2 The nations shall see your righteousness, and all the kings your glory, and you shall be called by a new name that the mouth of the LORD will give. 3 You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the LORD, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God. L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. (10:30) Terree Rowbottom, Mezzo Soprano Gesu Bambino Pietro A. Yon THE EPISTLE is from Galatians 4:4-7, page 974: 4 But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. 6 And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, Abba! Father! 7 So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God. L: This is the Word of the Lord. *ALLELUIA AND VERSE C: Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia. *THE HOLY GOSPEL - The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the second chapter, verses 22-35, page 857: C: Glory be to Thee, O Lord. 22 And when the time came for their purification according to the Law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, "Every male who first opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord") 24 and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the Law of the Lord, "a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons." 25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. 26 And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord s Christ. 27 And he came in the Spirit into the temple, and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the Law, 28 he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said, 29 "Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace, according to your word; 30 for my eyes have seen your salvation 31 that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, 32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel." 33 And his father and his mother marveled at what was said about him. 34 And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, "Behold, this child is appointed for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is opposed 35 (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also), so that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed." L: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise be to Thee, O Christ. *THE CONFESSION OF FAITH (Luther s Explanation of 2nd Article 8, 9:20, 10:30) I believe that Jesus Christ, true God, begotten of the Father from eternity and also true man, born of the Virgin Mary, is my Lord, who has redeemed me, a lost and condemned creature, purchased and won me from all sins, from death, and from the power of the devil; not with gold or silver, but with His holy, precious blood and with His innocent suffering and death, that I may be His own, and live under Him in His kingdom, and serve Him in everlasting righteousness, innocence and blessedness, even as He is risen from the dead, lives and reigns to all eternity. This is most certainly true. Amen. CHILDREN S SONG (Sung as the children come forward) (8:00 & 10:30) Oh, come, let us adore Him, Oh, come let us adore Him, Oh, come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord! (x2) CHILDREN'S MESSAGE (8:00 & 10:30)
