Christ Church Charlotte Associate Rector for Outreach and Mission

Associate Rector for Outreach and Mission What We Seek How does a large congregation of 5,600 engage and deepen its work of charity, justice and reconciliation? Christ Church is seeking to call a thoughtful, creative and energetic priest who would enjoy exploring this essential question with our parishioners. Our ambition is to hire an Associate Rector who is passionate about building relationships across the great diversty of the human family and therein work to create a just society. We envision deep and meaningful opportunities for children, youth and adults to see and serve Christ in all people. Christ Church has a long tradition of engaging with the core issues of our time and doing significant work to impact our city, nation and world. We are seeking an approachable and relational Associate Rector who will offer courageous leadership -- empowering, teaching and walking alongside our parish in world-changing work -- and create a model of outreach and mission ministry for the wider church. We are blessed to have a tremendously gifted staff that we anticipate growing in the coming years. We are equally blessed with an energetic, ambitious, and faithful group of parishioners who call Christ Church their spiritual home. What we re looking for at Christ Church Charlotte may surprise you, and in turn, we hope that you may surprise us. Christ Church Charlotte Associate Rector for Outreach and Mission... Page 1

Associate Rector for Outreach and Mission What Our Associate Rector Will Do TAKE THE LEAD IN BUILDING A SERVANT LEADERSHIP PROGRAM to move parishioners from volunteerism to advocacy and involvement, and cultivate opportunities for meaningful relationships with diverse communities. Charlotte has been ranked 50th out of 50 for economic mobility among major US cities.* Through hands-on work in the areas of housing, education, and economic and social justice, supported by a 15-member Outreach and Mission Commission, we seek to address this disparity. *According to a 2013 Harvard/UC Berkeley study: www.equality-of-opportunity.org. LEAD WORSHIP AND PREACH in a variety of styles and settings: Rite I and Rite II, with formal preaching and rich music; Contemporary Service in a casual setting with modern music; Discovery Service for families and the youngest among us; Sunday evening relaxed service with a mix of music and readings from around the world; and other forms yet to be identified that help us draw near to God in new ways. SHARE WITH OTHER CLERGY STAFF in pastoral care, weekday liturgies or services, devotional writing, home and hospital visitations, baptisms, weddings, funerals, and other rites of the Church. PARTICIPATE IN OUR CONSTANT SELF-EXAMINATION: What are we doing now? What aren t we doing? What are we doing well? What can we do better? HELP US TO DEEPEN RELATIONSHIPS at Christ Church, our spiritual home, and to ignite a contagious faith in our parishioners, so that they may inspire others and make meaningful connections as a part of this community of charity, justice and reconciliation. Outreach and Mission at a Glance Our 2018 annual outreach budget of $400,000 focused on four core priorities: Housing, Poverty Prevention, Chidren, and Reconciliation/Social Justice. Additional resources totaling $435,000 for outreach are distributed from the Christ Church Foundation, Episcopal Church Women, and special offerings. Even more important than the dollars disbursed are the relationships and volunteer opportunities provided through Christ Church. Last year over 700 Christ Church parishioners were actively involved in outreach activities and mission trips, supporting the work of our 70 local and international partners. One of our significant relationships is with Rama Road Elementary School, where our members are committed to weekly mentoring, tutoring, Girl Scout leadership, family nights, and faculty support, as well as a six-week summer learning program. We are also deeply invested in addressing homelessness through our commitments to Habitat for Humanity, Room in the Inn, and the Men s Shelter of Charlotte, to name a few. We enjoy a long-standing and beloved partnership with the Diocese of Costa Rica, regularly sending mission teams there and to many other places around the U.S. and the world. This is just a sampling of our many and varied outreach and mission ministries. Serving the world is one of our core values, building on a rich tradition of outreach as we meet new challenges.
