THE OLIN T. BINKLEY MEMORIAL BAPTIST CHURCH AUGUST 21, 2016 THE FOURTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST BECOMING AWARE In my heart, I m troubled and worried about the way faith is cynically used by some to serve hate, fear, racism, and greed. Jesus, a brown-skinned Palestinian Jew, called us to preach good news to the poor, the broken, and the bruised and all those who are made to feel unaccepted. Rev. William Barber II, at the 2016 Democratic National Convention RINGING OF THE SANCTUS BELL Some traditions ring Sanctus Bells to call worshippers attention to the holy. (Sanctus means holy or sacred. ) Today, the Sanctus Bell rings to signify the holy around, among, and within us. Many: Rescue us from the grasp of the unjust and cruel. One: For we have trusted you since we were very young Many: From our birth, we have leaned on you. All: O God, our rock and deliverer, may we praise you always. * HYMN A Mighty Fortress Is Our God 65 EIN FESTE BURG

POSTLUDE Siyahamba arr. John Carter (We Are Walking in the Light of God) Upon leaving the sanctuary, please be mindful of those choosing to use the postlude as their final act of worship. WELCOME TO BINKLEY! Binkley Baptist Church is a community of faith on a journey that calls for questioning, humility and conviction. As followers of Jesus, we embrace spiritual growth, mutual care, and service, assured that as we serve our neighbors, we joyfully serve God. Intentionally inclusive, we welcome people of all races, sexual orientations, and cultures, respecting diverse religious experiences within the church and beyond. We invite others to join us in our commitment to peace, justice, and care for creation. In a spirit of Christian love, we welcome you. The mission of Binkley Baptist Church is building compassionate and joyful community, freely exploring spiritual paths, and pursuing justice and peace in the way of Jesus. Guests, welcome! We are so glad you have chosen to worship with us today. Please leave us your information in the Friendship Register so we can get to know you better. The flowers on the communion table are given in honor of my father, Frank Scrimsher (9/6/11). His favorite song was The Yellow Rose of Texas. ~Sheryl Scrimsher We are grateful for the musical gifts offered today by pianists Janice Pope, Brennetta Simpson, Michael Davis, Nan Pardington, and Scott Hawkins; Micheal and Sofia Palmer and members of the Binkley Youth Group, vocalists; and Patrick McDonough, percussion. Today, we welcome the Rev. Dr. Maria T. Palmer to the pulpit. Maria grew up in Perú and Guatemala, came to the U.S. as an exchange student (Jax State, AL), where she fell in love and married Micheal. A bi-vocational minister ordained by United Church of Chapel Hill, Maria founded and pastored Iglesia Unida (CH) from 1996-2004. Now a member of Binkley, Maria has also been affiliated with the Alliance of Baptists for the last 12 years. Maria has degrees in divinity and education, has served as a school principal, university administrator, columnist with The CH News, and founder of a Spanish immersion preschool. Maria has also served on the NC State Board of Education and is currently on the Chapel Hill Town Council. Mike and Maria have three grown children and a dog: Cristobal, Benji, Sofia, and Copper. Hearing assistance devices and children s worship bags are available in the Narthex before service begins. Music reprinted by permission under OneLicense.net A-701712. Following worship today in the Fellowship Hall, we will have a discussion with light, healthy snacks and child care. You can also share your thoughts online via the blog created by Steve Jernigan. Please check your Friday Update to access the blog. The Council looks forward to your comments, questions, and responses as we begin working on the Transition Teams suggestions and recommendations. HYMN SING AND ICE CREAM SOCIAL: AUG. 24 6:00 PM, SANCTUARY You ve asked for it, and we re doing it! Binkley Church is having an Old-Fashioned Hymn Sing on Wednesday, August 24 th at 6:00 pm in the Sanctuary. We ll be singing some of the great old Gospel songs that many of us grew up with. The Hymn Sing will be followed with fellowship, lemonade, and ice cream in the St. Francis Courtyard. We still need volunteers to bring homemade ice cream. If you can help, please contact Daniel (daniel@binkleychurch.org). APPLY FOR OUTREACH FUNDING: Applications for Outreach Programs and Projects for 2017 are now available. As we have done in the past, the Board of Outreach is asking the congregation to nominate programs and projects for funding as part of our outreach efforts. We are asking applicants to consider asking for funds not only for institutions but also for outreach (service) projects in which the entire congregation can participate. The application form is available in your Friday Update and paper copies are available in the narthex. We are particularly interested in nominations that are supported by more than one Binkley member, so please be sure and let us know if more than one person is supporting the nomination. Applications must be submitted by Friday, September 9th, but we urge you to get them in earlier so that we can start our work as soon as possible.

GIVE TO THE PASTOR S DISCRETIONARY FUND: We are usually reminded on Communion Sundays that we can make contributions to the Pastor s Discretionary Fund, which is used to provide assistance to people in financial distress in the wider community and in the congregation. The need this summer has been particularly great and the Fund is at a level where money cannot be disbursed until more contributions come in. (We try to keep a balance of $500; if it dips below, we don t disburse assistance.) Even though it is not a Communion Sunday, please consider making a contribution to the Pastor s Discretionary Fund. Fun, Engaging, Spiritual Opportunity, 2 Sundays a month: Pay Low, Benefits High. Despite the image in cartoons, Sunday School teaching is hardly prim and proper, but rather a chance to learn and grow one's faith through teaching children. We are beginning an exciting new curriculum, Shine, this fall, and we are needing a couple of more folks to commit to at least two Sundays a month in our elementary program. Could that be you? Please contact Stephanie Ford with your interest and/or questions. Church School Launch: September 11.

BINKLEY BAPTIST CHURCH PRESENTS Cultivating the Faithful Child: At Home and in Church August 27, 2016 Dr. Karen-Marie Yust Children need a brighter light than the glimmer of their own candles or the glow from a few family candles to find their way with God in this world. Supporting the spiritual lives of children takes teamwork! At Cultivating the Faithful Child, parents and educators can explore ways to help children grow in their lives of faith, both in church classrooms and at home. This day-long event includes a morning session for parents, a catered lunch, with time for conversation and resource-sharing, as well as an afternoon session for Christian educators. Come for the entire day or just for the morning or afternoon. Please register at office@binkleychurch.org and indicate the session(s) you will attend, and if you would like to join us for lunch ($10.00 per person). Otherwise, the event is free. 9:30 am Coffee & Light Refreshments 10-noon Event Schedule Cultivating Faith: Families and Spiritual Formation (designed for parents) Every day, contemporary families face major challenges as they try to live faithfully in an intercultural, multi-religious, secular world. Come explore ideas and tools from current research on children's spirituality that will help you cultivate the spiritual lives of children every day at home. 12:15-1:00 pm Lunch (catered) Resource tables 1:00-3:30 pm Speaking of Faith with Young Children (designed for teachers) New discoveries in developmental psychology are challenging many of our assumptions about children's spirituality. Come explore new ways of teaching children about God, faith and faithfulness that are based on the latest findings about moral development, identity formation, and social relationships. About Our Speaker: The Rev. Dr. Karen-Marie Yust is Professor of Christian Education at Union Presbyterian Seminary and an ordained clergywoman, with years of engaging leadership in congregational life. Dr. Yust has written extensively on children and youth. Two of her many publications are Real Kids, Real Faith: Practices for Nurturing Children s Spiritual Lives (2004) and Taught by God: Teaching and Christian Spiritual Formation (2006), co-authored with Ron Anderson. Dr. Yust holds a Th.D. in systematic and historical theology from Harvard University, and an M.Div. from Brite Divinity School; her three young adult children refer to her as Rev. Dr. Mom!
