UNDERSTANDING HYPOCRISY Sylvester Onyemalechi Hypocrisy is a false assumption of virtue. Hypocrisy is the act of pretending to have goodness and strength of character which one does not possess. Hypocrisy is frequently used in the Bible with the meaning of godlessness. Hypocrisy is falsely making oneself appear to be virtuous or good. Hypocrisy is pretence. It is masquerading to be what one is not. Hypocrisy is living a lie it is a life of deceit. It is all about insincerity. God s attitude towards Hypocrisy: The lord hates hypocrisy, but is at peace with those who are sincere. A man who acknowledges his sins and weaknesses and cries out for help always wins God s mercy and approval. But a man who pretends to be what he is not will only win God s curses and wrath. Matt 23:23-28 23 "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices-mint, dill and cummin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law-justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former. 24 You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel. 25 "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. 26 Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean. 27 "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of dead men's bones and everything unclean. 28 In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness. Luke 18:4-9 4 "For some time he refused. But finally he said to himself, `Even though I don't fear God or care about men, 5 yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won't eventually wear me out with her coming!'" 6 And the Lord said, "Listen to what the unjust judge says. 7 And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? 8 I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?" 9 To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everybody else, Jesus told this parable: Hypocrisy is ugly Luke 13:14-16

14 Indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, the synagogue ruler said to the people, "There are six days for work. So come and be healed on those days, not on the Sabbath." 15 The Lord answered him, "You hypocrites! Doesn't each of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or donkey from the stall and lead it out to give it water? 16 Then should not this woman, a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has kept bound for eighteen long years, be set free on the Sabbath day from what bound her?" Can you see the ugliness of hypocrisy in this story? The same people who on a Sabbath day will lead their donkey out to drink water, rescue their child or livestock that falls into a well or pit, will not allow Jesus to heal on a Sabbath day. Jesus work is spiritual and to the benefit of the people. It does not require physical strength or exercise from Jesus end but the Pharisees work is physical. These Pharisees pretend that they don t do any work on the Sabbath; meanwhile, they do. That is why they were called hypocrites by the Master. Do you pretend like them? Are you a hypocrite? The character of a hypocrite 1. A hypocrite is self-righteous. A hypocrite only sees the speck in the people s eyes, but does not see the plank in his own eyes. He knows how to point accusing finger. Because he has deceived himself, he does not want to face the reality of his own fault and sins, rather, he is busy identifying other people s faults and sins and blasting them. Matt 7:4-5 4 How can you say to your brother, `Let me take the speck out of your eye,' when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye. There is a need for every man to attend to himself first before he can attend to other people. See your faults and deal with it, before you start dealing with other people s faults. Do not pretend as if you don t have faults. Acknowledge your own faults and deal with it. When you raise a cry about another man s fault(s) or sin(s), do not forget that you are not completely free. 2. A hypocrite has no conscience. The things they do wrong do not convict them or prick their conscience. The self-deceit they manifest does not make them feel guilty. They are so full of themselves that their consciences are dead. 1 Tim 4:2 2 Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron.

3. Pretenders are only manifesting a hardened heart. If you are living a hypocritical life, you are only proving that you don t have a conscience. Nothing touches you. The word of God that you read or hear daily or weekly does not touch or have effect on you. It means you are a rebel - You are living in your own world of selfrighteousness or rather unrighteousness. 4. Hypocrites are evil men. If you are a hypocrite, you are an evil person and you will be punished as evil men are punished. Check your life and see if you are guilty of hypocrisy. 5. Loves the praise of men. A hypocrite loves the praise of men. He always wants to be noticed and praised. As a result will pretend to be what he is not. He pretends to love God. He pretends to be prayerful. In church he prays louder than any other person, but at home does not pray much if at all he prays. In church, he pretends to be very nice, quiet, gentle, loving and holy but at home he is a devil manifestation. Check yourself very well. Some of you are regarded and praised outside as godly and good Christians. But at home, amongst your family and neighbors you are a warrior, stubborn, disobedient, and quarrelsome, a hater, and fighter, lazy, insolent, abusive, rude, and arrogant. In fact, you are a nuisance - a total disgrace to Christianity. But in church, you are a worship leader, prayer warrior, church worker, leader, pastor, evangelist etc. Do not forget that it is the quality of your life that takes you to heaven and not the office you occupy in the Church. If men praise you and God does not praise you, you are doomed. Therefore, you should live for God s approval and no one else. Matt 6:1-6 6:1 "Be careful not to do your `acts of righteousness' before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. 2 "So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. 3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 5 "And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. Matt 6:16-18 16 "When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. 17 But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, 18 so

that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 6. The teaching of Jesus reveals that hypocrisy is manifestation of wrong motives. It means that God is always checking the motives behind our actions and service. Jesus sees into our hearts to know why we pray so loudly in public, why we wear sad faces when we fast, and why we give and do all that we do. Do not have a hypocritical motive. It will only destroy you. It pays to serve God with a sincere heart. It pays to do all things and say things with a sincere and pure heart without wrong motives. 7. A hypocrite stands in the way of sinners. The hypocrites stand in the way of sinners with their hypocritical life. Matt 23:13 13 "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the kingdom of heaven in men's faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let those enter who are trying to. Ps 1:1-3 Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. 2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. 3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers. If a hypocrite by his way of life is an obstacle to sinners according to our Lord Jesus Christ, it therefore means he is under a curse, for if you are not blessed, then you are cursed. 8. A hypocrite, because he does not care about who is hurt by his life, destroys with his mouth. Prov 11:9 9 With his mouth the godless destroys his neighbor, but through knowledge the righteous escape. It is important that you the child of God abandon the life of hypocrisy and be sincere in your service of God. Speak words that will minister life. Conduct yourself in a way that you will be a living testimony of who Jesus is and preached, and be an inspiration to others. The end of all hypocrites

Matt 24:50-51 50 The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. 51 He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Job 8:11-13 11 Can the rush grow up without mire? can the flag grow without water? 12 Whilst it is yet in his greenness, and not cut down, it withereth before any other herb. 13 So are the paths of all that forget God; and the hypocrite's hope shall perish: KJV Job 13:16 16 He also shall be my salvation: for an hypocrite shall not come before him. KJV Job 20:5 5 That the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite but for a moment? KJV 1. From all the above passages, it is very clear that the end of all hypocrites (pretenders) is destruction. The life of all hypocrites is characterized by dryness.... Whilst it is yet in his greenness, and not cut down (still a Christian), it withereth before any other herb. Spiritual dryness is the worst state a Christian should be. Hypocrisy brings about spiritual dryness. To eliminate spiritual dryness is to eliminate hypocrisy. If you want to experience the presence and fellowship of the Holy Spirit, you must eliminate all forms of pretence and sincerely serve God. 2. The final destination of all hypocrites is hell. A life of pretence and insincerity will land you in hell where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth forever. Kill hypocrisy before it kills you. Take off the mask It is time to put away pretence. You have won that mask enough. We want to meet the real you. It is time you take a good look at yourself and address your problems. Hypocrisy is evil. Drop it! Put on sincerity as you put on a cloth. Let sincerity be your way of life. Stop pretending that you love a particular person, when you don t. Deal with the lust in your heart. Stop pretending that there is no problem between you and that sister or brother. Deal with the pain, the hurt, the bitterness, the evil motive that you are covering up as it may apply to you.

Stop pretending that you are prayerful, when you are not. Stop pretending that you read, believe and practice the word of God, when you do not. Stop pretending that you love God when you do not. Stop pretending that you are not fornicating when you are. Stop pretending that you understand what is being preached and taught in your church when you don t. Admit that you don t understand, ask questions when you don t understand; let your leaders know that you don t understand, so that they can attend to your peculiar need. Stop pretending you have money when you don t. Stop pretending that you don t have money when you do. Don t be afraid of giving. It is in giving that you receive. Don t let covetousness rule you. Conquer greed through your giving. Deal with pretence in your life. Remove the mask. Let us see the beauty or the ugliness behind the mask. God loves you. Jesus Christ loves you. The Holy Spirit loves you. I love you that is why we are sharing these with you. It does not pay to be hypocritical - it is fatal. It is to your advantage that you be sincere in all things and at all times. I advice, that you see your pastor for counseling or help, if you are guilty of this crime and do not know how to deal with it. You can come and see me for counseling or write me. Jesus Christ pronounced so many woes (curses) on the hypocrite, because it is terrible and evil. Escape from it today and you will be saved in Jesus name. Give attention to the word of God that you read and hear every day. Practice the word. Don t joke with the instructions and counsel of God. Let the word of God touch your heart. Let it be your life. Sincerely accept and practice the word of God. Change what God wants you to change, live as he wants you to live. And you will be blessed.
