THE GOSPEL OF LUKE JESUS CHRIST THE SON OF MAN LUKE CHAPTER 16:1-14 TAPE NUMBER SM-664 SEPTEMBER 14, 2008 THE TITLE OF THE MESSAGE: The Humanity and Divinity of Jesus Christ, The Son of God, and The Son of Man SUBJECT TOPICALLY REFERENCED UNDER: Value, Worth, Salvation, Forgiveness, Repentance Introduction to the Text; Luke 16:1-14 The Theme and Textual Summation of the Passage I grew up in a home where the rule was, We don t talk about religion and politics. It s the politically correct way of saying; The thought of God terrifies us and we don t get involved in our own future But Maybe There s One Other Issue That Just Drives People Crazy, It Terrifies Them, It Messes with Their Future. Yet, like religion, like politics, its effects each and everyone of each and everyday It s the issue of money Luke 16:1-14 He also said to His disciples: There was a certain rich man who had a steward, and an accusation was brought to him that this man was wasting his goods. :2 So he called him and said to him, What is this I hear about you? Give an account of your stewardship, for you can no longer be steward. :3 Then the steward said within himself, What shall I do? For my master is taking the stewardship away from me. I cannot dig; I am ashamed to beg. :4 I have resolved what to do, that when I am put out of the stewardship, they may 1

receive me into their houses. :5 So he called every one of his master s debtors to him, and said to the first, How much do you owe my master? :6 And he said, A hundred measures of oil. So he said to him, Take your bill, and sit down quickly and write fifty. :7 Then he said to another, And how much do you owe? So he said, A hundred measures of wheat. And he said to him, Take your bill, and write eighty. :8 So the master commended the unjust steward because he had dealt shrewdly. For the sons of this world are more shrewd in their generation than the sons of light. :9 And I say to you, make friends for yourselves by unrighteous mammon, that when you fail, they may receive you into an everlasting home. :10 He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much; and he who is unjust in what is least is unjust also in much. :11 Therefore if you have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches? :12 And if you have not been faithful in what is another man s, who will give you what is your own? :13 No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon. :14 Now the Pharisees, who were lovers of money, also heard all these things, and they derided Him. Phil. 3:18-19 For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: :19 whose end is destruction, whose god is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame who set their mind on earthly things. What s In Your Wallet 1.) Will someday be accounted for v.1-2 1a.) WILL SOMEDAY BE ACCOUNTED FOR We ve all been given a purpose Verse 1a He also said to His disciples: There was a certain rich man who had a steward, Who s The Certain Rich Man? the debate is that it represents Lord God Himself / or Just a Certain Rich Man And what s a Steward? Someone who has the oversight and responsibility of his masters goods. 2

It is certainly true for every human being that God has given them life. Each of us have oversight and are responsible for our lives. The Very Person You Are Has Been Created for God Ordained Purpose Ephesians 2:10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them. Someday, you and I will have to give an accounting to God for this life that we have chosen to live. John 15:16 You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, Every True Christian Has a Passion to glorify the Lord in their lives Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. Lord, tell me, what is it that you d have me to do? 1b.) WILL SOMEDAY BE ACCOUNTED FOR We ve all been given a trust Verse 1b-2a and an accusation was brought to the rich man that this steward was wasting his goods. :2 So he called him and said to him, What is this I hear about you? We ve All Been Given a Trust a a Trust Is the responsibility for taking care of somebody or some thing Jesus warned against squandering our lives 3

@ time, energy, abilities, freedoms, powers, Verse 2 What is this I hear about you? Rom. 14:10b For we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ. 2Cor. 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ that each one may receive the things done while in this body, according to what each has done, whether it be good or bad. The Christian Has Been Entrusted with a New Life for others! Gal. 6:10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith. Those who have - should help those who hurt. The government welfare system can never work. It s a flawed concept. The Government Should Build Freeways and Bridges and Armies The Church Should Take Care of the Hurting and Wounded. WILL SOMEDAY BE ACCOUNTED FOR 1c.) We ve all been given a talent Verse 2b Give an account of your stewardship, for you can no longer be steward. Matt. 25:14-30 For the kingdom of heaven is like a man traveling to a far country, who called his own servants and delivered his goods to them. :15 And to one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one, to each according to his own ability; and immediately he went on a journey. :16 Then he who had received the five talents went and traded with them, and made another five talents. :17 And likewise he who had received two gained two more also. :18 But he who had received one went and dug in the ground, and hid his lord s money. :19 After a long time the lord of those servants came and settled accounts with them. :20 So he who had received five talents came and brought 4

five other talents, saying, Lord, you delivered to me five talents; look, I have gained five more talents besides them. :21 His lord said to him, Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord. :22 He also who had received two talents came and said, Lord, you delivered to me two talents; look, I have gained two more talents besides them. :23 His lord said to him, Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord. :24 Then he who had received the one talent came and said, Lord, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you have not sown, and gathering where you have not scattered seed. :25 And I was afraid, and went and hid your talent in the ground. Look, there you have what is yours. :26 But his lord answered and said to him, You wicked and lazy servant, you knew that I reap where I have not sown, and gather where I have not scattered seed. :27 So you ought to have deposited my money with the bankers, and at my coming I would have received back my own with interest. :28 So take the talent from him, and give it to him who has ten talents. :29 For to everyone who has, more will be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away. :30 And cast the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. The Context of This Illustration that Jesus Gives Is. What Are You Doing With What You Have? But Pastor Jack; I only have ten dollars in my wallet, what can $10 dollars do? First Off Christian Understand This; (Money is not money to the Christian money is tools to the Christian) The Foundation of Giving: Prov. 3:9-10 Honor the LORD with your possessions, And with the first fruits of all your increase; :10 So your barns will be filled with plenty, And your vats will overflow with new wine. What s In Your Wallet 2.) Will someday repay you v.3-7 2a.) WILL SOMEDAY REPAY YOU We re required to be current 5

Verse 3 Then the steward said within himself, What shall I do? For my master is taking the stewardship away from me. I cannot dig; I am to ashamed (proud) to beg. Jesus is not saying, we need to be like this guy. but He is saying learn a lesson from this guy! In the moment of life be mindful to be resourceful. How Does or How Can this Thing glorify God that should be the Christian motto. Gal. 6:7-8 Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows (does with his life), that (the same) he will also reap. (experience upon himself) :8 For he who sows (what he does with his life) to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, (diestruction) but he who sows to the Spirit (things of God) will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. The Fact That Someone in This Life has Money Doesn t mean that they are either good or evil - - it s what they do with that money that matters reveals what s in the Heart. Luke 6:24 But woe to you who are rich, For you have received your consolation. 2b.) WILL SOMEDAY REPAY YOU We re required to be prophectic Verse 4 I have resolved what to do, when I am put out of the stewardship, they may receive me into their houses. We re required to be prophetic with our lives = that means our money too We will be taking nothing with us on That Day 6

Luke 6:38 Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you. On Tithing: Mal. 3:8-10 Will a man rob God? Yet you have robbed Me! But you say, In what way have we robbed You? In tithes and offerings. :9 You are cursed with a curse, For you have robbed Me, Even this whole nation. :10 Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, That there may be food in My house, And test Me now in this, Says the LORD of hosts, If I will not open for you the windows of heaven And pour out for you such blessing That there will not be room enough to receive it. Luke 12:31 But seek the kingdom of God, and all these things shall be added to you. 2c.) WILL SOMEDAY REPAY YOU We re required to be creative Verse 5-7 :5 So he called every one of his master s debtors to him, and said to the first, How much do you owe my master? :6 And he said, A hundred measures of oil. So he said to him, Take your bill, and sit down quickly and write fifty. :7 Then he said to another, And how much do you owe? So he said, A hundred measures of wheat. And he said to him, Take your bill, and write eighty. There s a sense of urgency here! His resources are about to run out so he goes about to insure Himself against the day that he has nothing. And your resources are running out your personal opportunity s fleeting! When you had the chance, why didn t you do what I wanted you to do? - Signed, Jesus Christ What s In Your Wallet 7

3.) Will someday reveal who your god really was v.8-14 3a.) WILL SOMEDAY REVEAL WHO YOUR GOD REALLY WAS Are you looking ahead as you follow your God? Verse 8 So the master commended (to see the plan) the unjust steward because he had dealt shrewdly. For the sons of this world are more shrewd in their generation than the sons of light. Shrewd To be astute, cunning and ingénues. To go about with ever an eye open to seize the opportunity. To be thinking in advance. To be crafty. Simply Put, as Christians, we re to be on the offensive, advancing the things of God with great expedition and industry What am I to give to God today? (Life) James 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, 1Cor. 4:7b what do you have that you did not receive? Now if you did indeed receive it, why do you boast as if you had not received it? 2Cor. 9:6-7 But this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. :7 So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver. :8 And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work. Matt. 6:19-21 Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; :20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. :21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. A man s spirituality can be seen by his generosity 8

- Reformer, Martin Luther 3b.) WILL SOMEDAY REVEAL WHO YOUR GOD REALLY WAS Are you doing all you can in service to your God? Verse 9-12 WILL SOMEDAY REVEAL WHO YOUR GOD REALLY WAS :9 Now I say to you, make friends for yourselves by unrighteous mammon, that when you fail, they may receive you into an everlasting home. :10 He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much; and he who is unjust in what is least is unjust also in much. :11 Therefore if you have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches? :12 And if you have not been faithful in what is another man s, who will give you what is your own? It was as though he went to the bank and exchanged monetary currency in for opportunity currency. Verse 9 Now I say to you, make friends for yourselves by unrighteous mammon, That when you fail, they may receive you into an everlasting home. The meaning is remarkable; Jesus is saying If you have the resources to influence people by your money, do it to advance the kingdom s interest! If this wicked steward can think this up using money dedicated for personal wealth, how much more should a Christian be using his/her resources for heavenly things? Whatever you have within your power, a car, an airplane, a house, an apartment, shoes, $10 dollars can be used to further the cause of chirst! 1Cor. 10:31 Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. Is What I Have Available for God s Use? This is Equally Remarkable; 9

Verse 9 They may receive you into an everlasting home. The meaning is, anything that you do to invest in getting the word out will bring others into the kingdom forever! or What we re all doing to educate, feed and give Jesus to 100 s of Muslim Children everyday in Mali, West Africa. STOP SEEING DOLLARS AS MONEY, RATHER SEE MONEY AS TOOLS. - JACK HIBBS Rom. 10:13-15 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. :14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? :15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? Our wealth and possessions are to be used to obtain eternal friends. 2Chronicles 31:5-6 As soon as the commandment was circulated, the children of Israel brought in abundance the firstfruits of grain and wine, oil and honey, and of all the produce of the field; and they brought in abundantly the tithe of everything. :6 And the children of Israel and Judah, who dwelt in the cities of Judah, brought the tithe of oxen and sheep; also the tithe of holy things which were consecrated to the LORD their God they laid in heaps. Phil. 4:11-12 I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. :12 I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. Verse 10 He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much; and he who is unjust in what is least is unjust also in much. A Christian s Zeal To Make Money 10

Should be Equal to Those of This World Because of What We re Going to Do With it When we Get It 3c.) WILL SOMEDAY REVEAL WHO YOUR GOD REALLY WAS Are you in love with your God? Verse 13-14 :13 No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon. :14 Now the Pharisees, who were lovers of money, also heard all these things, and they derided Him. How can you tell if your god is money? It s easy actually. Try giving it to God and see how you feel about it. Verse 13a Does it make you happy or does it make you sick? No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, if you love money, Then you will hate God and see Him as a threat and a thief. Verse 13b Verse 14 Or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon. If you re loyal to money, then you will despise God and refuse Him Now the Pharisees, who were lovers of money, also heard all these things, and they derided Him. What Are You In Love With? Let s Look In Your Wallet 11

Are we looking at money; or milk for the poor? Are we looking at bucks; or burgers for hurricane relief? Are we looking at cash? Or concrete for the school in Africa? I can show you who and what your god is by looking at your bank statement. (Where is your money going tells all) Mark 8:35-37 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel s will save it. :36 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? :37 Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?
