The Third Sunday of Ordinary Time 21 January 2018 Saint Luke Church, Whitestone, New York Poor Box helps in rebuilding Haiti.. Thank you to the parishioners who donate to the Church Poor Box. Your generosity has enabled us to send a donation of $500 to help in the repair of the Church of St. Rose of Lima in Benjamin Diocese of Ansea Veau in Nippes, Haiti. The support of the Poor Box has enabled the Parish to respond to the needs of the poor near and far, young and old, organization and individual. BAPTISM PROGRAM When preparing for the Baptism of your child, parents must attend a Pre-Baptism Class. Godparents are welcome and encouraged to attend. The class is held once a month usually on the third Monday night of the month at 7:30pm. The Baptismal Liturgy is usually celebrated on the second and fourth Sunday of the month at 3pm. No Baptism can take place until the church receives a copy of the child s Birth Certificate as required by the diocese. If you are planning a Baptism, please note the following dates: Baptism Class Baptism Sunday February 12 February 11 and 25 March 12 March 11 When considering godparents, please understand that a Godparent should: 1. be a firm and enthusiastic believer, ready, willing, and able to help his or her godchild live a Christian life. 2. be at least sixteen years old. 3. lead a life in harmony with the faith and the role to be undertaken. 4. have received all three Sacraments: Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation. 5. not be the child s parent. GIRL SCOUTS SILVER PROJECT Four dedicated 8th Grade Girl Scouts at St. Luke s have developed a program to help younger students from their school. As part of their Silver Project, the highest award granted to a Girl Scout Cadette, Jennifer D Elia, Rebecca Dagnello, Ella Gazzillo and Angelina Rama have just kicked off a homework/extra help assistance program. The girls meet with up to 12 students from grades 1-3 weekly to help them with their homework and to play educational activities to help them strengthen their skills in any area they are struggling with. The session is a combination of group work and one-on-one time. The program is free and week 1 was a huge success. The girls hope that this program will sustain beyond their graduation from the school with future 8th graders supporting younger students. Page 11

J is for Jellyfish Ms. Kelley s Pre-K class has been learning about jellyfish. They have no brain, no bones, no heart and no lungs. They live in all the oceans of the world and some even in fresh water. Jellyfish have a mouth, stomach and tentacles. They use their tentacles to catch food by stinging their prey and then they eat them with their mouth. We are making a jellyfish using 3 coffee filters, washable markers, tissues, scissors, glue and a spray bottle of water. Jellyfish are fun to make! Page 13
SCIENCE LAB Our Pre-K 2 is exploring in the Science Lab! Christmas Art Contest The kindergarten completed the art projects for The Missionary Association Christmas Artwork Contest. Two grand prize winners will be selected from the schools in the Brooklyn Diocese. If a student wins, their artwork will be reproduced as the official Christmas cards of the National Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies in the U.S. Good luck to all K-8 students from St. Luke School!
