BAPTISMS We welcomed into our church through the Sacrament of Baptism, our newest member: Emily Jean Kozak PASTOR S CORNER Hello my dear friends of Saint Jude, I would like to ask you to help me to pray for all the victims and survivors of sexual abuse, in particular children and young people. It s hard for us to hear about all of these horrible and criminal actions. Also, I would like to ask you, as family of St. Jude, to stay together in this storm, to be united like the people of Israel in the middle of slavery or when they were in exile. They stayed together. I ask you to stay together because I don t want to give up the priesthood and you don t want to give up the faith. For example, I don t want to give up my faith because I believe Jesus has established this faith in Him for our salvation and our happiness and holiness. The way to solve problems is not by going astray or by giving up. You see, after Jesus crucifixion, the disciples were able to overcome their fear by staying together with the Blessed Mother until they received the Holy Spirit. I would like to let you know that the authorities of New Jersey are creating windows for the victims to tell the truth and to do justice to all of them. And the Diocese of Paterson and all the dioceses of New Jersey have in place protocols to immediately involve law enforcement agencies whenever there is any allegation that a minor is being sexually abused. If you know anything about sexual abuse here at St. Jude, please let me know immediately or call the Diocese. But again, let us stay together and let us pray that the Holy Spirit comes upon us to strengthen and keep us united in the faith of Jesus Christ. Amen God Bless You, SEXUAL ABUSE REPORTING GUIDELINES If any person may have been abused by any priest, he or she should immediately contact the local County Prosecutor s Office and the Diocese s Victims Assistance Coordinator, Peggy Zanello, at 973-879-1489. Wednesday, August 29th, the church calendar calls for Memorial of the Passion of Saint John the Baptist. The Church, having celebrated the earthly birthday of St. John the Baptist on June 24th, now honors the anniversary of his martyrdom. Besides our Lord and our Lady, St. John the Baptist is the only one whose birth and death are thus celebrated. The Gospel for Wednesday relates the circumstances of his execution. He had the courage to blame Herod to his face for the scandal of his illegal union with his sister-in-law Herodias, whose husband was still alive. Herodias contrived to make Herod imprison him and took advantage of an unexpected opportunity to obtain through her daughter Salome the beheading of the saint. John was imprisoned for proclaiming the truth, but, being superstitious, Herod dared not take any further action against him as he knew John to be a righteous man, and Herod held an incredible and growing fascination with John. John s holiness was so evident that the Jews thought he might be the Messiah who had been promised, but John had protested and denied it. At the Jordan, John had pointed out Christ in person exclaiming: "Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sin of the world. This is he, of whom I said: After me there comes one, who is preferred before me: the latchet of whose sandal I am not worthy to loose. And that there be no doubt as to Whom he meant: And I saw, and I give testimony that this is the Son of God. From that moment onwards, the change in position of the two men became evident: He must increase, and I must decrease. John s mission was to announce the Messiah. Therefore, once the Lamb of God had arrived, the prophecy of St. John the Baptist was fulfilled, and his public mission decreased as he headed toward his martyrdom. On the contrary, Our Lord would increase until the complete fulfillment of His divine mission. The humility of St. John the Baptist was rewarded. Our Lord said that no man born of woman was greater than he. It is impossible to have higher praise or more honorable glorification, but this finds its roots in the most profound humility demonstrated by John.
