Lewis once wrote that Christianity is not so much about being nice people but in being "new men." We see this contrast in today's Gospel. "Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?" Jesus first answers in the predictable way. Follow the commandments! "Teacher, all of these I have observed from my youth." Perhaps for some of us it's easy to answer this way. "I'm a good person!" he seems to reply. Does he truly follow all the commandments he professes to follow? Does he -- in word and deed -- check off all the boxes of the moral law? Perhaps. Whether he's being honest or fudging the truth, Jesus accepts his answer at face value with compassion. "Jesus, looking at him, loved him." But he's not done yet! Jesus wants to remind us that this attitude alone is not enough. "Go, sell what you have... then come, follow me." Jesus' invitation to the young man is radical. Abandon everything that gives you any sense of security. Give it all up for an unknown future with a wandering preacher. The Christian life is not easy. "How hard it is to enter the kingdom of God!" It's easier, Jesus says, for a gigantic camel to squeeze itself through a tiny needle's eye. But the God of the universe creates out of nothing, breaks the bars of hell, and raises the dead to life. Is a needle's eye really such an obstacle? Jesus' invitation is always bigger than our own limitations. This week, what do we need to offer up? How is Jesus inviting us to follow him? TWENTY EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME OCTOBER 14, 2018 Our Mission Statement
Church of Corpus Christi Brothers and Sisters, PARISH NEWS Roseville, Minnesota A few weeks back, I asked all of us to take to prayer the question: God, how are you calling me to deepen my relationship with Jesus Christ? This question is one we can continually return to, because our journey with Jesus never contains a stop sign. Our gospel this weekend tells us the story of one man who asked this same question in different words. He already has a relationship with God and he tries to base his life in response to God as best he can: he keeps the commandments. But Jesus invites him into something more. He looks at him with love and invites him to abandon his fear and trust in Jesus love. Over the last few weeks, Jesus has been gently but insistently asking me to abandon my own fears: the fear of making a wrong move, the fear of being mistaken, the fear of looking bad, the fear of my human limits before the weight of such important ministry at two parishes. It is a choice to reject fear, but in doing so the Lord has planted a joy in me to believe and to see the great things he has in store for our faith family in Roseville. I am more convicted than ever that Jesus is among us, and that, in him, we are proclaiming and building the kingdom of God. Each week I have so much to be grateful for when I see Christ in you. What keeps us back from the loving look of Jesus? How are we tempted to go away sad? How have we become comfortable with our fears, instead of being fearless in his divine comfort? When do we want our relationship with the Lord to be a stop sign This is as far as I will go instead of a green light? Let us continue to be disciples of daily, heartfelt prayer, that we can experience the Lord s hundredfold among us! In the love of Christ,
