The BIBLE Story Abraham and Isaac Genesis 22 Abraham and Sarah were very old when God gave them a son. They named him Isaac. God said all of the people on earth would be blessed because of Abraham and Sarah s family, so their son Isaac was very special. One day, God told Abraham to do something that sounded strange. God told Abraham to take Isaac to a special mountain and give him to God as a sacrifice. Abraham loved Isaac very much. God had promised that Isaac would have a family. How could that happen if Abraham gave Isaac as a sacrifice? Abraham believed that God would make things turn out right. He did not know how God would do it, but Abraham believed God would keep His promise about his family. So Abraham obeyed. Early in the morning, Abraham, Isaac, and two helpers took a donkey and the supplies they needed. They walked for three days until they came to the mountain. Then Abraham and Isaac went up the mountain by themselves. Isaac saw that something was missing. Where is the lamb to sacrifice to God? asked Isaac. Abraham said, God will give us a lamb to sacrifice. Abraham built the altar and got ready to offer Isaac to God. A voice called to them from heaven and said, Abraham, I see that you were willing to do what I said. You do not have to offer your son Isaac. Abraham looked up and saw a ram caught in the bushes. God had sent a ram to sacrifice instead of Isaac. God could see that Abraham loved God most of all. God said to Abraham, You will have as many descendants as the stars in the sky and the sand on the seashore. All the world will be blessed. Christ Connection: Abraham trusted God. He was willing to give up his son Isaac when God asked him to. God provided a ram so Isaac could live. God was willing to give up His Son, Jesus, to save the world from sin. Jesus gave up His life as a sacrifice for our sin so we can live. 2
INTRODUCE the Story WELCOME TIME: Greet each kid as he or she arrives. Have one leader stand by the door with the clipboard to greet children by name and welcome their parents as they arrive. Use this time to collect the offering, fill out attendance sheets, and help new kids connect to your group Prompt kids to talk about the hardest test or quiz they ve ever taken. What made the test or quiz hard? Say Throughout our lives we face many kinds of tests. Most tests while you are growing up will be school tests, but there are other kinds of tests too. Today we will hear about a time God put Abraham to the test! ACTIVITY PAGE Invite kids to complete the What s Missing? activity page. In each picture, kids will draw in the missing bit of equipment. Make sure kids realize that the last picture is Abraham and Isaac going to offer a sacrifice to God. SAY The last picture on the activity page showed Abraham and Isaac on their way to make a sacrifice to God. What they did not seem to have with them was an animal to sacrifice. Why do you think they would go to offer a sacrifice with nothing to sacrifice? We ll learn more about that soon. ACTIVITY: Easy or hard Explain that you will say a task. If a child thinks that task would be easy to do, he should stand up. If he thinks the task will be hard to do, he should sit down. Use the following tasks or create your own. Eat your favorite ice cream. (easy) Clean up the whole house. (hard) Play with a good friend. (easy) Climb up to the top of a tall tree. (hard) Run across the room. (easy) Give away your favorite toy. (hard) SAY Looks like you all agreed that it would be hard to give away your favorite toy! It would be hard for me to give away my favorite thing, too. In today s story, God asked Abraham to give up something very special to him. We will listen to our Bible story to find out what that is! WORSHIP: While the children finish playing or coloring, get the worship DVD ready. Choose 3 or 4 songs to sing today. SAY It s large group time! Come sit on the rug with us! We re going to sing some fun songs together that worship God! Why do we sing to God? (Answer: To honor Him with our worship!) TEACH the Story TRANSITION TO THE STORY: To gain the attention of all the kids to move them to Bible study, flip off the lights or clap a simple rhythm for the children to copy. Place a bookmark at Genesis 22 in your Bible. Invite a kid to open it and reverently display the open Bible. SAY Last week, we learned that even though Abraham had grown old, God still planned to use him. In fact, God made a covenant to bless the whole world through Abraham. Abraham trusted God because he understood that God s plans were better than his own. 3
Point to the Bible story picture. Remind children that all the stories in the Bible fit together to tell an even bigger story. The Bible tells us the big story of how God rescues sinners through His Son, Jesus. TELL THE BIBLE STORY: Show the Bible Story Video and then recap the Bible story by reading the words below. SAY During those days, offering a sacrifice was a way to show that you love and trust God. Sometimes a sacrifice would be grain or oil, but often it meant killing an animal. When God asked Abraham to offer Isaac, it was a very difficult test to see if Abraham trusted God completely. Abraham showed that He would obey God no matter what God commanded. Abraham trusted God even when he did not understand God s plan. PRACTICE THE KEY PASSAGE: Cut out the Key Passage Marker and place it at Galatians 3:29. Invite a volunteer to come up and open your Bible to the key passage. Read the key passage aloud. Practice the motions you created for the verse. SAY We know that God s covenant with Abraham included a promise of a big family that would bless the world. Amazingly, this key passage teaches us that when we believe in Jesus, we are included in that promise! We are blessed by Jesus so that we can bless others by telling them about Jesus. MISSIONS MOMENT: SAY When God first called DJ s mom and dad to be missionaries, they moved to a country in South Asia. Before long, they had to return to the United States. Although leaving South Asia was difficult, they trusted God s plan. Now they get to share the gospel with South Asians in Canada! Many South Asians live there. Let s see how DJ s family is telling people about Jesus and how we can be a part of their work. Show the Giving Matters missions video. SMALL GROUP DISCUSSION: Break into smaller groups with one leader in each group. We can trust God because He is faithful. God always keeps His promises. In our story today, Abraham was asked to give something very important! Abraham trusted God. Show the Bible story picture as you ask the following questions. Retell parts of the Bible story as needed. 1-What was the name of Abraham and Sarah s son? (Isaac) 2-Why was Abraham willing to give up his son when God asked him? ( Abraham trusted God.) 3-What did God provide for the sacrifice instead of Isaac? (a ram) 4-What did God say Abraham s family would have as many people as? (stars in the sky, sand on the seashore) 5- Why can we trust God? We can trust God because He is faithful. 4
PRAY TO CLOSE: SAY Why do we pray? (Answer: To open our hearts to God and talk to Him!) Ask the group if anyone has any prayer requests and pray together as a group. SNACK: Gather preschoolers for snack time and have them wipe their hands with a sanitizing wipe. Pray, thanking God for the snack. Pray, thanking God for the snack. Serve a snack. Remind children we can trust God because He is faithful. EXPERIENCE the Story ACTIVITY 1: Tell about a favorite toy Lead preschoolers to sit on the floor. Invite preschoolers to come up one at a time and tell about their favorite toy. Ask them if it would be hard to give up that toy forever. SAY Giving up your favorite toy would be really hard, wouldn t it? Abraham was asked to give up something way more important than a toy! But God did not take Isaac from Abraham, just like I am not going to ask you to give up your favorite toy. Why can we trust God? We can trust God because He is faithful. ACTIVITY 2: Find the ram Hide a stuffed ram or another stuffed animal somewhere in the room. You may also choose to print and hide the Ram printable instead. Invite preschoolers to find the ram. When preschoolers are near the ram, tell them that they are getting warmer, and when they are far from the ram, tell them they are getting colder. When they find the ram, lead them all to say, Look, a ram! together. SAY Great job using your eyes and ears to find that ram! Abraham trusted God and was willing to give up his son, but God was faithful to provide a ram instead. Why can we trust God? We can trust God because He is faithful. TRANSITION AND DISMISSAL: For the remainder of the time, kids may color the Bible story coloring page, play a simple game to practice the key passage, or sing another song together. CHECKOUT PROCEDURE: As parents begin to arrive, open the door and have one leader stand just outside the classroom door with the attendance sheet. Take the parent s security sticker and call loudly for the child to come. While you wait for the child to come, tell the parents something that their child enjoyed doing or did well during the service and distribute the preschool big picture cards for families. Before you let the child leave the classroom, look to see that the parent and child security codes match and remove the sticker from the child s shirt as they leave. Note: If a parent lost their security sticker, send them to the check-in desk for approval; never allow a child to go to a parent unless they have the security sticker. 5
