PROCLAIMER Weekly Newsletter for the Puyallup Seventh-day Adventist Church Thursday, August 27, 2015 Greetings Church Family, The school year is upon us--and we have a great crop of new students ready for another year! I have a report that our academy has enrolled over 230 students as well which is a huge answer to prayer! Lots of exciting things are planned for this year so make sure you watch the Proclaimer and the bulletin for more info. We have a baptism this Sabbath and I hope everyone will extend a warm welcome to Antoinette Counterman during second service. Ernie Brock brought her to our meetings with Dan Bentzinger and since then she has been studying with Pastor Mike, several of our deaconesses, and a little with myself towards the end (due to Mike's sabbatical) and she is ready to make a public commitment to Christ! Pastor Mike popped in yesterday to tell me that we will have another baptism at our Sunset Lake campout as well, so another thing to look forward to at that special event. MAKE SURE YOU RSVP FOR THE CAMPOUT...sorry to yell, but I don't want you to put this off :) We have a good number of people registered for Sunday's Volunteer Appreciation Picnic, and I want to thank Tom and Peggy Emery, Rachel Johnson, Jana Smith, Tracy Beaulieu, Kathy Mundy and April Johnson for all their hard work in setting this up for everyone. In the office we are working with Survey Monkey, a free online survey that we will send out, possibly in subsequent Proclaimers, that will enable those who attend our church/school events to give us some feedback and suggestions. The surveys are very easy, mostly just clicking on multiple choice answers and then clicking "send". More on this later, but this will keep us from having to take up time in the worship service, though we will probably make hard copy feedback forms available as well once we get the hang of things. My family and I travel to MN on Wednesday and will be back on September 10th. My brother is getting married and, obviously, it s important that we are there. We will have some extra time to take a little family vacation time, something that hasn't happened much this summer due to work, travel for meetings and school residency. We will be back in time for the campout! Floyd Marshall will be sharing the Word next Sabbath while we are away. School is off and running and the classic feeling of drinking from a firehose is prevalent. This week I logged away about 700-800 pages of reading and still need to comment on about 20 of my peers assignments, but I am learning (and processing) a lot, and am having a little fun. :) As for our house, they have completed texturing the walls, soon to follow are electrical fixtures, painting, cabinetry and floors! This Sabbath is our last look at the church as a gift to the world, and the next mini-series we have will look at doctrine and Adventist distinctives--fitting since October is Adventist History Month. For those wanting some book suggestions for SDA History I recommend: Knight, G. (2000). A search for identity: The development of Seventh-Day Adventist beliefs. Hagerstown, MD: Review and Herald Pub. Association. Bull, M., & Lockhart, K. (2007). Seeking a sanctuary: Seventh-day Adventism and the American dream (2nd ed.). Bloomington: Indiana University Press. The first is my favorite Adventist resource and the second looks at our church and movement from a scholarly outsider--both are worth a read. Looking forward to seeing you Sabbath! Pr. Seth
