Thoughts on Worship Every year we celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. Our paraments go red to symbolize the tongues of fire the disciples observed. Our diversity is on full display as we embody the good news of that important day: God is on the loose in our world, transcending our artificial boundaries and transforming our lives to be more like Christ. From the music to the readings (so many languages!) to the sermon, may your hearts be drawn to our shared faith, our shared love, our mutual kinship in Christ. Prelude Sonata da Chiesa por Flauto & Organo, Mvmt. 1 Andante Franck Martin (b. 1928) Daniel Carlo, Flute Wesley Hall, Organ Prayer of Illumination Holy God, you spoke the world into being. Pour your Spirit to the ends of the earth, that your children may return from exile as citizens of your commonwealth, and our divisions may be healed by your word of love and righteousness. Amen. Lyn Stevens Venite 1 O come, let us sing unto the Lord: let us heartily rejoice in the strength of our salvation. 2 Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving: and shew ourselves glad in him with psalms. 3 For the Lord is a great God: and a great King above all gods. 4 In his hand are all the corners of the earth: and the strength of the hills is his also. 5 The sea is his, and he made it: and his hands prepared the dry land. 6 O come, let us worship, and fall down: and kneel before the Lord our Maker. 7 For he is the Lord our God: and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. * Pentecost Processional The Congregation will sing the following refrain after each verse of choral chant.
Veni Creator Spiritus, mentes tuorum visita, imple superna gratia, quae tu creasti, pectora. Qui diceris Paraclitus, donum Dei altissimi, fons vivus, ignis, caritas, et spiritalis unctio. Tu septiformis munere, dextrae Dei tu digitus tu rite promissum Patris, sermone ditans guttura. Accende lumen sensibus, infunde amorem cordibus, infirma nostri corporis virtute firmans perpeti. Come, Holy Ghost, Creator, come from thy bright heav'nly throne; come, take possession of our souls, and make them all thine own. Thou who art called the Paraclete, best gift of God above, the living spring, the living fire, sweet unction and true love. Thou who art sevenfold in thy grace, finger of God's right hand; his promise, teaching little ones to speak and understand. O guide our minds with thy blest light, with love our hearts inflame; and with thy strength, which ne'er decays, confirm our mortal frame.
I ve walked and walked all over over I ve turned and turned all over over I ve searched and searched all over over There s no one there s no one like God Hostem repellas longius pacemque dones protinus; ductore sic te praevio vitemus omne noxium. Per te sciamus da Patrem noscamus atque Filium, te utriusque Spiritum credamus omni tempore. Far from us drive our deadly foe; true peace unto us bring; and through all perils lead us safe beneath thy sacred wing. Through thee may we the Father know, through thee th'eternal Son, and thee the Spirit of them both, thrice-blessed three in One. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and
Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs in our own languages we hear them speaking about God s deeds of power. All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, What does this mean? But others sneered and said, They are filled with new wine. But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord s great and glorious day. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. One: May the Spirit of Wisdom lead us to understanding. Many: Thanks be to God.
