T HE B OOK OF R EVELATION A REVELATION OF JESUS CHRIST REVELATION CHAPTER 5:1-7 MEDIA REFERENCE NUMBER SM-517 JANUARY 11, 2004 THE TITLE OF THE MESSAGE: REDEMPTION B Y J ESUS C HRIST - SUBJECT TOPICALLY REFERENCED UNDER: Redemption, Judgment INTRODUCTION to the text Revelation 5:1-7 In Twelfth Chapter of Second Corinthians, verse 4 The apostle Paul alludes to the fact that he had experienced a near death or an afterlife revelation, he says that how he was caught up into Paradise and heard inexpressible words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter. What was not allowed by the Apostle Paul to speak of regarding heaven, here the apostle John is given the go-ahead from the angel, to tell all that he sees and hears regarding the revelation of Jesus Christ and the concluding events of these last two thousand years. Here, John has Been Telling us of Great and Awesome Things about Heaven and Things about the Future and about Eternity Revelation Chapters 4 & 5 have no grammatical break. From chapter 4:1 thru to Chapter 5, there is no change of camera Chapter 5 is The Most Important Chapter Thus Far in Our Study, Because it Deals with One of The Most Troubling Issues of Our Lives That Issue Being If God is all Loving and Caring then Why is There so Much Suffering in this world? and Why did God create Adam and Eve if He knew that they were going to sin and mess everything up? The Answers to these Issues are Found Right Here in Chapter 5 Revelation 5:1-7 And I saw in the right hand of Him who sat on the throne a scroll written inside and on the back, sealed with seven seals. :2 Then I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, Who is worthy to open the scroll and to loose its seals? :3 And no one in heaven or on the earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll, or to look at it. :4 So I wept much, because no one was found worthy to open and read the scroll, or to look at it. :5 But one of the elders said to me, Do not weep. Behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has prevailed to open the scroll and to loose its seven seals. :6 And I looked, and behold, in the midst of the throne and of the four living creatures, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as though it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent out into all the earth. :7 Then He came and took the scroll out of the right hand of Him who sat on the throne. 1

R EDEMPTION B Y J ESUS C HRIST. I.) Means that Jesus has become our Salvation vv. 1-2 And I saw in the right hand of Him who sat on the throne a scroll written inside and on the back, sealed with seven seals. :2 Then I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, Who is worthy to open the scroll and to loose its seals? Jesus Christ has become our salvation 1 st By Himself being God s authorized agent v.1 And I saw in the right hand of Him who sat on the throne a scroll written inside and on the back, sealed with seven seals The Roman Will written inside and on the back Meant that The Scroll was Full, And Nothing More Could Legally be Added Roman Law Required that a Legal Will, a Last Will and Testament, be Sealed (7) Seven Times. We Have in Historical Museums the Wills of Several Roman Emperors Each of them Have been Sealed (7) times. The Seven Seals #1 indicated that the will had been completed by its author #2 that the Will could only be opened by an authorized agent #3 And that the Will had, specific requirements of performance that must be fulfilled #4 That the fulfillment of those performances had to be done by someone who met the qualifications and/or by the author of the Will himself (who would have already been dead a little catch there) 1 Corinthians 11:25 In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me. Hebrews 9:15-17 And for this reason He is the Mediator of the new covenant, by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions under the first covenant, that those who are called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance. :16 For where there is a testament, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator. :17 For a testament is in force after men are dead, since it has no power at all while the testator lives. The Scroll is a Legal Document, The Seven Seals are Seven Requirements So Then, For What Reason, is Our Question? - - Why? 2

Some Say; It s the New Testament, Others, It is the Will of God, Still Others, That it is the Counsel of God to Man This Scroll is The Title Deed to Planet Earth. The Unfolding of the Seals takes up most of the Book of Revelation The Unfolding of That Will, The Scroll written inside and on the back of this one scroll A Roman Scroll Revelation 8:1 When He opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour. Revelation 8:2 And I saw the seven angels who stand before God, and to them were given seven trumpets. Class, Take a Deep Breath In Our Line Up of the Seven Seals, The Seventh Seal (the last seal) Reveals the Seven Trumpets of Judgment, The Seventh Trumpet (the last trumpet) Reveals Seven Bowl Judgments. Revelation 11:15 Then the seventh angel sounded: And there were loud voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever! This is The Title Deed of the Earth The Bible Says That Satan is the Ruler of this World Right Now 2 Corinthians 4:3-4 But even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, :4 whose minds the god of this age has blinded, Ephesians 2:2 Tells us that Satan is the prince of the power of the air, that spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, Remember When Satan Offered Jesus the World? Matthew 4:8 Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. Matthew 4:9 And he said to Him, All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me. Psalm 24:1 The earth is the LORD s, and the fullness thereof; (Satan Stole It, Jesus Bought it Back, and Chapter 5 is the escrow Papers!) 3

Jesus Christ has become our salvation 2 nd By Himself alone He became our performance v.2 Then I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, Who is worthy to open the scroll and to loose its seals? Who is Worthy? to open the scroll and to loose its seals? Daniel 12:8 Although I heard, I did not understand. Then I said, My lord, what shall be the end of these things? Daniel 12:9 And he said, Go your way, Daniel, for the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end. R EDEMPTION B Y J ESUS C HRIST II.) Means that He has done what no man can vv. 3-4 And no one in heaven or on the earth or under the earth was able (worthy) to open the scroll, or to look at it. :4 So I wept much, because no one was found worthy to open and read the scroll, or to look at it Jesus Christ has done what no man could have ever done 1 st By Jesus Christ man s hope is restored v.3 And no one in heaven or on the earth or under the earth was able (worthy) to open the scroll, or to look at it. Mankind could not have been redeemed by any other mode, method or morality! It was Absolutely and Utterly Impossible for Any Human Being to Gain Entrance into Heaven do you understand that? This is a test According to God, man as he is will not, cannot inherit heaven 2 nd By Jesus Christ man s salvation is realized v.4 So I wept much, because no one was found worthy to open and read the scroll, or to look at it R EDEMPTION B Y J ESUS C HRIST 4

III.) Means that Jesus Christ has met the requirements vv. 5-7 But one of the elders said to me, Do not weep. He s met all the requirements 1 st By being faithful to the commitment to save v.5 But one of the elders said to me, Do not weep. Behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has prevailed to open the scroll and to loose its seven seals. Who is Worthy? THIS IS A CALL TO WORSHIP Genesis 49 1 And Jacob called his sons and said, Gather together, that I may tell you what shall befall you in the last days: :8 Judah, your brothers will praise you; your hand will be on the neck of your enemies; your father s sons will bow down to you. :9 You are a lion s cub, O Judah; you return from the prey, my son. Like a lion he crouches and lies down, like a lioness who dares to rouse him? :10 The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler s staff from between his feet, until Shiloh comes to whom it belongs and the obedience of the nations is his. :11 He will tether his donkey to a vine, his colt to the choicest branch; he will wash his garments in wine, his robes in the blood of grapes the Root of David, has prevailed to open the scroll and to loose its seven seals. the Root of David The Heritage of Jesus Christ, in His Humanity, Whose Son Does The Bible Say He is, In His Humanity? The Son of David! Matthew 1:1 The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. Matthew 9:27 When Jesus had departed, two blind men came following Him, crying out and saying, Son of David, have mercy on us! Could You Say Then, That Jesus Has His Roots in David? Of course! 5

The Scripture Says That Jesus is The Root of David The Definite Article Here The - - Places Jesus Before David Matthew 22:41 While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, Matthew 22:42 saying, What do you think about the Christ? Whose Son is He? They said to Him, The Son of David. Matthew 22:43 He said to them, How then does David in the Spirit call Him Lord, saying: Matthew 22:44 The LORD SAID TO MY LORD, Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool? Matthew 22:45 If David then calls Him Lord, how is He his Son? Matthew 22:46 And no one was able to answer Him a word, nor from that day on did anyone dare question Him anymore. John 8:58 Jesus said to them, Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM. He s met all the requirements 2 nd By being obedient to the death of the cross v.6 :6 And I looked, and behold, in the midst of the throne and of the four living creatures, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as though it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent out into all the earth. :7 Then He (The Lamb) came and took the scroll out of the right hand of Him who sat on the throne. DON T LET THE HORNS AND EYES FRIGHTEN YOU; The having seven horns and seven eyes It s a Great and Wonderful Thing Seven is the Number of Completion or Completeness. And the Horn or Horns Represent an Authority or King in the Bible 2 Samuel 22:3 The God of my strength, in whom I will trust; My shield and the horn (king or authority) of my salvation, and seven eyes this is the Lambs perfect scope, vision and knowledge of earthly affairs He is all seeing, and all knowing 6

This Verse Means That Jesus Christ will be the Conductor over the events of the Great Tribulation Revelation 6:16 and the unbelieving will say to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us and hide us from the face of Him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! :17 For the great day of His wrath has come, and who is able to stand? This is None Other Than, Jesus Christ Our Great God and Savior! These Are The Awesome and Somber Moments Just Preceding the Open of the Great Tribulation As the Lamb / He is the Sacrifice! As the Lion / He is the King! I Looked and I Beheld I saw in the middle of the throne, a lamb Notice Now That the direction in which the elders and the angels fall down toward, Is toward the midst of the throne in the midst of the throne and of the four living creatures, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb GOD HAD FULFILLED HIS PROMISE Gen. 22:6 So Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife, and the two of them went together. Gen. 22:7 But Isaac spoke to Abraham his father and said, My father! And he said, Here I am, my son. Then he said, Look, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering? Gen. 22:8 And Abraham said, My son, God will provide for Himself the lamb Exodus 12:3 Speak to all the congregation of Israel, saying: On the tenth of this month every man shall take for himself a lamb, according to the house of his father, a lamb for a household. :4 And if the household is too small for the lamb, let him and his neighbor next to his house take it according to the number of the persons; according to each man s need you shall make your count for the lamb. :5 Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year. 7

A Lamb Today, Jesus Christ is Just a Really Great Man. He s a Lamb, Buddha s a Lamb, Mohammad is a Lamb, Whatever The Lamb He s the Only Lamb! That s Kinda Tough to Handle. You Mean Like He s the Lamb and all others are Chopped Liver? Your Lamb Do you have a personalized Lamb? There is only one, He s The Lamb and if you don t have The Lamb, Then you don t have A Lamb to Trust in John 1:29-30 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. :30 This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me. Have You Taken to Yourself, Jesus Christ to be Your Lamb? It s hell without him as though it had been slain a mutilated lamb. beaten, torn, rejected and hated THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT WE ALL WILL SEE IN HEAVEN WHEN WE ARRIVE Can I Close With a Passage of Scripture. Let s See if You Can Guess Who s it of This was written 743 years before Jesus was born, which for us today, Makes it nearly 2,800 years old Listen!!! Isaiah 52:13 The LORD says, My servant will succeed in his task; he will be highly honored. :14 Many people we be shocked when they see him; because, he was so disfigured that he hardly looked like a human being. :15 Soon, many nations will marvel at him, and kings will be speechless with amazement when they see him. They will see and understand something that they had never known before. :1 People will reply, Who would have believed what is now reported to us? Who could have seen that it was the LORD s hand in all this? :2 But it was the will of the LORD that his servant should grow like a plant taking root in dry ground. God s servant had no dignity or beauty to make us take notice of him. There was nothing attractive about him at all, nothing that would have drawen our attention to him. :3 The fact I, we despised him and rejected him; all the while, he endured the suffering and pain. No one would even look at him we turned our eyes away from him as if he were nothing. :4 But he endured the suffering that, should have been ours to suffer, the pain that we should have borne, he took in our place. All the while, we thought that his suffering was just the punishment of God on him. :5 But it was because of our sins he was wounded like that, he was beaten because of the evil that we ve all thought and did. We re healed by the punishment he suffered, made whole by the blows he received. :6 All of us were like sheep that were lost, each of us going his own way. But the LORD made the punishment that was for us, to fall on him, the punishment all of us deserved. 8

:7 He was handled brutally, but endured it humbly; he never said a word nor did he defend himself. Like a lamb about to be slaughtered, like a sheep about to be sheared, he never said a word. :8 He was arrested and sentenced and led off to die, and no one cared about his fate at all. He was put to death for the sins of all humans. :9 He was placed in a grave with those who are evil, he was buried with the rich, even though he had never committed one single crime nor had ever told a lie. :10 The LORD says, It was my will that he should suffer like that; his death was a sacrifice to bring forgiveness for the entire world. And so he will see his descendants; and through him my purposes will succeed. :11 After a life of suffering, he will again have joy; he will know that he did not suffer in vain. My devoted servant, with whom I am well pleased, will bear the punishment, and for his sake I will forgive them. :12 And so I will give him a place of honor again, a place among the great and powerful. He willingly gave his life and shared the fate of evil men. He took the place of sinners and prayed that they might be forgiven. Every year when the Lamb was to be offered up as a burnt offering, Dr. Eherdershiem notes that the Levitical practice was to take the sacrificial lamb and impale it through from the rear thru to lower portion of the lower jaw. Then a second stave would be used to pass through from left to right just below and behind the Lambs torso and front legs. It was then placed into the fires of sacrifice. Professor Albert Barnes Points that if you would exalt or raise that lamb up vertically, you would see a lamb crucified on a cross! end 9
