FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH SEYMOUR WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A CHRISTIAN? Christian is the name given to followers of Jesus Christ. Why do we follow Jesus? God created us in His image so He could invite us into His presence where there is fullness of joy and pleasures forevermore (Psalm 16:11). In short, you were created to KNOW, LOVE, and SHOW God. Creation is the venue in which we live our purpose. The first humans, however, turned from God and were banished from His presence. Since all human beings were in Adam, all inherited his sinful nature. We sin because we are sinners, all of us. Because God is holy and just, as sinners we cannot live in His presence. Yet, God s plan has always been to reveal Himself to us through an ultimate act of love, justice, and GRACE! The Father sent His Son to live and die on the cross in our place as our substitute. This is what we call the gospel, or the good news. It is how God brings us to Himself: We must acknowledge our rebellion against God, turn from all other sources of salvation and ways of justifying ourselves before God, and put our trust in Jesus alone to bring us to God. (For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God 1 Peter 3:18.) When that happens, God makes us into new people. We are born again. Instead of being In Adam, God puts us In Christ. Everything that belongs to Jesus now belongs to us: His life, His death, His resurrection, and His inheritance. So Christians are followers of Jesus. He is the way, the truth, and the life. If you were created to live in God s perfect presence then ALL OF LIFE is about this: KNOWING, LOVING, AND SHOWING GOD. How do we know, love, and show God? Jesus has made Him known to us. Jesus has revealed God s holiness and love to us. Jesus has shown us how to live a life that reflects God s glory to others. And through the Holy Spirit, Jesus lives in us to do all these things. Jesus is coming again to make all creation new and those that are His will live in God s presence forever and our joy in Him will be full and complete! Are you a Christian (a follower of Christ)? Do you believe He is the Son of God come to take away your sins and give you new life? Have you confessed your rebellion against God, that you worship other gods? Do you trust in Jesus alone to bring you to God and that in Him alone is found the fullness of joy? All that is required is to turn to Jesus in faith, trusting that He alone can make you right with God and then receive His presence, His Holy Spirit, into your life.
2 WHY CHURCH? It s a legitimate question. Can you be a Christian without going to and/or belonging to a local church? Yes! Then why have church at all? Church is the word used to identify those God has rescued to Himself through Jesus Christ. If you are a Christian, you belong to His Church (His people). The Church is part of God s plan to reveal His glory through the grace of the gospel of Jesus. God is not just saving people. He is saving A PEOPLE. Since God is relational (Father, Son, and Spirit), He created us to flourish in relationships with others. The Church is the place where this is supposed to happen: God s people together, in God s place, and enjoying God s presence. Yes, churches are full of imperfect people and even imperfect leaders. Sometimes people in the church forget what the church is for. But that doesn t mean we should abandon the local church. The Church is part of God s plan to make followers of Christ who know Him, Love Him, and Show Him to one another. WHAT ABOUT FBC SEYMOUR? We are a Christ-centered church. Our teachings and our ministries focus on the person and work of Jesus because Christianity is about Christ. So we talk a lot about Jesus and try our best to make a big deal out of Him. We don t boast in our own goodness (because we have none) but only in Jesus and His cross. Only because of Christ are we part of His Church. FBC Seymour is a Southern Baptist Church. What does that mean? Basically it means that what we believe and what we do align with the historical faith and practice of the Baptist denomination and that we support the work of the Southern Baptist Convention, especially in our giving to support missions work done by the SBC. God: We believe in one God, eternally existing in three Persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. 2. Bible: We believe the Holy Bible is the inspired Word of God, without any error, the all-sufficient authority in matters of faith, doctrine, and Christian living. 3. Jesus: We believe in the Virgin Birth of Jesus Christ, and that He is fully God and fully man; We believe that He lived a sinless life; that He died on the cross for our sins, and that He rose bodily from the dead; We believe
3 that He ascended into heaven where He now sits at the right hand of the Father as our Great High Priest and Advocate. 4. Second Coming: We believe in the personal, bodily, imminent, and glorious return of the Lord Jesus Christ, and that His Second Coming inspires believers for dynamic and zealous life and service while waiting for His return. 5. Humanity: We believe that humankind was created in the image of God, but fell into sin and became separated from Him. We believe it is only by the atoning death and subsequent resurrection of Jesus and through the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit that humankind can experience salvation and obtain eternal life. 6. Salvation: We believe that eternal salvation is the free gift of God, based entirely upon the person and work of Jesus Christ, apart from man's works, and is possessed by any and all who repent of their sins and place their faith in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. 7. Eternal Life: We believe in the bodily resurrection of the dead, the everlasting blessedness of the saved in heaven, and the everlasting punishment and separation from God of the unsaved in hell. 8. Church: We believe in a regenerated church membership: that is, only those persons who have made a public profession of their faith in Christ and been baptized by immersion shall be considered for membership in First Baptist Seymour. We believe in the autonomy of the local church. The church shall manage its own affairs and shall not be subject to any other religious body or organization. We believe that there are two ordinances for the church. The first is baptism by immersion, which symbolizes a person s union with Christ and identifies him/her as a Christian. The second is the Lord's Supper, which is a memorial to His suffering and death on the cross. These are ordinances to be observed by the church in obedience to Christ s commands, and they serve as a motivation for believers to pursue holiness; however, they are not to be regarded as a necessary means for salvation. 9. Christian Life: We believe that believers in Christ are sanctified and set apart unto God for His service: What do we do? Our mission is to be and develop followers of Jesus Christ who know God, love God, and show God. Our vision is to see people trusting Christ with their whole lives; living in God s presence glorifying and enjoying Him.
4 How do we try to accomplish our mission? Our goal is to be and make followers of Jesus through: Christ-Centered Worship: KNOW GOD- Worship is ascribing value or worth. Life is constant worship. We make decisions based on what we value most (what we worship). The root of all sin is the worship of creation instead of the Creator. But God alone is worthy of our worship because He is infinitely more valuable that what He created. All of creation is meant to move us to worship: what we eat, drink, our relationships, everything! Our worship of God is centered on Christ because He is the greatest display of God s glory and because without Him we would still be separated from God. Worship is the fuel for becoming more like Christ. o Corporate Worship: Worship is nurtured in corporate gatherings with fellow believers through praying, singing, teaching, preaching, and celebrating the ordinances together. Corporate worship provides us the opportunity to receive, remember, respond and rejoice in the work of our great King. Christ-Centered Community: LOVE GOD- God is relational and communal. Bearing the image of God, we are to reflect this reality. The Christian faith is to be lived out in communion with others. Christians don t just attend church; they belong to the church, to God s people. Church is a call to reject mere attendance and casual involvement for loving care, commitment, and service to one another. o Sunday School o Care Groups o Women s Ministry o Men s Ministry o Student Ministry o Children s Ministry o Golden Agers o Committees/Ministry Teams Christ-Centered Missions: SHOW GOD- God s mission is to extend His mercy and grace to others. The church is the conduit through which the truth and love of Jesus Christ reaches out to others. 5 What does a follower of Jesus look like? Here are the 10 CORE TRAITS we use to describe a follower of Jesus: Core Beliefs: God- I believe there is one God who exists in three persons and created all things that I might know Him, love Him, and show Him to others. Humanity- I believe that all people are loved by God, are sinful by nature, and need Jesus as their Savior. Sin- I believe sin is rebellion against God and the denial of Him as most glorious. Jesus- I believe Jesus is the eternal Son of God who came to earth, lived a perfect life, died a sacrificial death, and rose again so that through faith in Him I might be forgiven of my sins, receive His righteousness, and have eternal life with God. Holy Spirit- I believe the Holy Spirit is God and convicts me of my sins, lives in me from the moment of my salvation, and empowers me to live a life that glorifies God. Salvation: I believe my salvation is a gracious gift of God that I could never earn and never loose and that faith in Jesus Christ is the only way to receive God s gracious gift of salvation and adoption. Eternity- I believe there is a heaven and a hell and that Jesus Christ is returning to judge the earth and to establish His eternal kingdom. Church- I believe the church is made of all believers and is God's primary way to accomplish His purposes on earth today. Bible- I believe the Bible is the Word of God that is without error and has the right to command my belief and action. Christian Life- I believe God has saved me in order to live for His glory and enjoy Him forever in a life of service to Him. Core Virtues and Values: Love- I sacrificially and unconditionally love and forgive others. Joy- I have inner contentment and purpose in spite of my circumstances. Peace- I am free from anxiety because things are right between God, myself, and others. Patience- I take a long time to overheat and endure patiently under the unavoidable pressures of life. Kindness/Goodness- I choose to do the right things in my relationships with others. Faithfulness- I have established a good name with God and with others based on my long-term loyalty to those relationships.
6 Gentleness- I am thoughtful, considerate and calm in dealing with others. Self-Control- I have the power, through Christ, to control myself so that I may glorify God. Hope- I know that God s plans and purposes will come to pass. Humility- I submit my life to God and treat others as more important than myself. Core Practices: Worship- I worship God for who He is and what He has done for me. Prayer- I pray to God to know Him, to lay my requests before Him and to find direction for my daily life. Repentance- I confess sin in my life and work to turn from it. Bible Study- I study the Bible to know God, the truth, and to find direction for my daily life. Community- I fellowship with other Christians to accomplish God's purposes in my life, others' lives, and in the world. Giving away your life- I give away my life to fulfill God's purposes. Giving away your time- I give away my time to fulfill God's purposes. Giving away your money- I give away my money to fulfill God s purposes. Giving away your faith- I give away my faith so others can know God through Jesus. Using your spiritual gifts- I know and use my spiritual gifts to accomplish God's purposes. BELONG, BECOME, BEYOND God made you to Know Him, Love Him, and Show Him. That happens when we trust in Jesus as the Way, the Truth, and the Life. That s the purpose God made you for: living in God s presence, glorifying and enjoying Him forever. The Church exists to be the body of Christ on earth and to join God in His mission to spread the knowledge of His glory. This doesn t just happen. It is a process, a journey, that we all are traveling. We talk about this journey with these three words: Belong, Become, and Beyond. Before you can realize God s purpose for your life you must BELONG to Him through faith in Jesus. When you BELONG to God and His people you are being changed to BECOME more like Jesus. That process includes living BEYOND yourself in service to God.
7 PRAYER GUIDE This guide uses the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) prayer model as a guide. This is not a secret formula in order for God to hear your prayers. Rather, this is simply helping you build a routine in your prayer life. That being said, here s how to use this guide: 1. Read the scripture for the given day. Remember there are only five days in the reading week, so utilize the two makeup days on the weekend if necessary. 2. Use the Prayer Guide and answer the Key Questions under each section. It can be helpful to write your responses on a sheet of paper or in a prayer journal. This can help maintain your focus during prayer. 3. Add the Church-Wide Supplications to your requests. If there was a particular person you prayed for, consider sending them a text, giving them a call, or sending them a note to tell them you prayed for them. ADORATION Prayers of adoration are prayers of worshipful praise to God for who He is his character, his nature, and his work. KEY QUESTION: What praiseworthy attribute(s) of God was on display in any of the texts that you read today? Praise God for these as you ve seen them in your life. CONFESSION Prayers of confession identify sins you have committed, agree with God that they are sins, admit that you did them, and express your desire to act in accordance with His will in the future. KEY QUESTIONS: Were there any sins on display in the text you read today (Characters disobeying God, the author identifying sinful deeds, etc.)? Are you guilty of sins similar to these? Are you tempted in similar ways? Confess these sins to him, and ask for help to avoid these temptations in the future.
8 THANKSGIVING Prayers of thanksgiving focus on specific ways God has provided for you. While similar to adoration, thanksgiving isn t praising God for who He is (creator, redeemer, healer, Lord, etc.), but for what He has done (healing my friend, saving my child, etc.). KEY QUESTIONS: Did God act in the text in a way that brought to mind a way He has acted on your behalf in the past? Thank Him for those things. If not, what has He done in your life for which you should be grateful? SUPPLICATION Prayers of supplication are simply making your requests known to God. In supplication, we are soldiers in the midst of battle, asking our commander for supplies. KEY QUESTIONS: What are you currently worried about? Where do you need God to intervene? Ask God for these things, remembering that He cares for you!
9 CHURCH-WIDE PRAYER GUIDE MONDAY Pray for the lost people in your life. Pray that they would come to faith in Jesus and that you would have opportunities to have spiritual conversations with them and with those God places in your path this week. TUESDAY Pray for the body of FBC Seymour. Ask God to unify us, that we might display the love of Christ to each other, to our community, and to the world. Pray for other church members, that they would grow deeper in their faith and love for one another. Ask God that He would use FBC Seymour to reach the lost. WEDNESDAY Pray for our Wednesday Night ministries to our children, youth, and parents. Pray for those that drive our vans that God would protect them. Pray that all involved would honor Jesus and that children and youth would come to know Him and follow Him. THURSDAY Pray for your enemies. Pray that God would bless them. Pray that God would soften your heart towards them and their heart towards you.
10 FRIDAY Pray for our government leaders, local, state, national, and international. Pray that God would give them wisdom and that they would trust Him with their decisions. Pray for leaders you know by name. SATURDAY Pray for our brothers and sisters around the world who are being persecuted. Pray that God would give them the strength to endure. Pray for Christ to be made known through their bloodshed. Pray for the missionaries that are at work around the world. Pray that they wouldn t lose heart. Pray that they would be encouraged today. SUNDAY Pray for the worship service at FBC. Pray that God would be exalted through the preached word. Pray that God would be praised through the corporate singing. Pray that people would come to repentance for indwelling sin. Pray that sinners would come to Christ today. Pray that the hearts of God s people in our church would be revived for His glory.
