Kindergarten-2nd November 15-16, 2014 David and Goliath I Samuel 17 Adventure Bible for Early Readers (pp. 338-340) Connect Time (20 minutes): Five minutes after the service begins, split kids into groups and begin their activity. With God, anything is possible! You may want to set out large sheets of papers with giants (for Connect Time) before kids even arrive. That way, you don t have to tape them all on at once. Large Group (25 minutes): Begin 20 minutes after the service starts. Model what it looks like to be engaged in large group. Small Group (15 minutes): Keep kids in small groups until parents arrive. If you all have extra time at the end, you can review the video and songs together. As kids leave, encourage them to use their coloring page to retell today s story. Today, we re talking about David and Goliath and how God can help us with anything. Be prepared to share ways God has helped you face giants in your life.

GOAL: Connect Time is all about engaging kids in an activity that allows them to connect with each other right away while simultaneously piquing their curiosity for Large Group and preparing their minds for what they re going to hear. DEFEATING GIANTS *Break kids into small groups. (You can have one volunteer lead all groups if that is best for your room.) Give each small group a large, tear-off sheet of paper Tape the print-out of a giant to one end of the large sheet of paper Tell kids to pretend this giant is as tall as the ceiling, and he wants to fight them. Imagine what they would do. Kids can draw a picture of their response with markers on the paper (them fighting the giant, running away, etc.) Get creative and have fun with this. Debrief: o o Share response. Ask: Even though we might not fight giants, what kind of hard things do we have to do? (Can be chores, school work, being kind to bullies, obeying parents, etc.) Then ask kids about the best and worst parts of their weeks (kids will have a big opportunity to share tough things in small group, so you maybe want to focus on highlights for this portion of the service. If you have extra time, remind them of your expectations for their behavior: (1) be kind, (2) listen when somebody speaks, and (3) follow the leader s instructions.

Goal: Kids will (1) understand that it was God who enabled David to kill Goliath and (2) recognize that we can trust God to deliver us too. Why? Every kid here faces tough things some in a more extreme way than others. It s important to learn at a young age that nothing is too tough for God. Tip: Not sure how to use an impossible balancer? Watch this video ahead of time: www.youtube.com/watch?v=beksyuikrbi. REVIEW THE STORY 1. Do you think you would have been scared facing a giant like Goliath? 2. Do you think David was scared? Why or Why not? 3. Were the people around David helping and supporting him? 4. Why wasn t David afraid to fight Goliath? 5. How did David beat Goliath? (Kids may refer to the five stones, but also push them toward recognizing that God made it possible.) IMPOSSIBLE DISCUSSION 6. Pick up pre-made impossible balancer. Balance the end closest to the pipe cleaner on your finger (see the image below): 7. With it on your finger, share one giant you face that you need God s help to defeat. a. If you have a small enough group, have kids balance it one by one while they answer this question: What big thing do need God s help with? b. If you have a large small group, let kids take turns balancing it while you get the whole group started on this week s coloring page. *Pray, asking God for help defeating all the giants kids shared. Extra time? Turn coloring sheets over and have kids draw themselves standing up to one hard thing in their life. Or play the impossible game from large group by giving kids funny instructions that are impossible or nearly impossible to do.

1 Be prepared to give a personal example of a giant (hard thing) in your life. There are three songs today (one for prayer and response). If large group is going long, skip the third song (Bravery). *Click to play intro music. Hi everybody! Welcome to Kids Club! I m so glad you re here today. I noticed you guys were pretty busy during Connect Time. We were pretending we were standing in front of a REALLY big giant. Let me hear what you guys would have done. (Let 3-5 kids share their responses; have them keep their answers short.) Wow, that sounds awesome! And some of you might know that a long time ago, a kid just a little older than you guys really DID face a giant. That kid s name was David and we hear all about him in the Bible. Some of you might already know what he did to beat the giant, whose name was Goliath. But today, we re going to talk about why he did it. It s pretty amazing. INTRO: DAVID AND GOLIATH (Show picture of Goliath.) So Goliath was part of a whole army called the Philistines. Can you guys say Philistines? (Let kids say it.) God s family was afraid because the Philistines hated God s family (the Israelites) and wanted Goliath to attack them! In fact, every day for FORTY days, Goliath dared God s family to find somebody brave enough to fight him. And every day, God s family was too scared. Nobody would do it. Just imagine why they were so scared Goliath was over NINE feet in real life (try to show with your hand how high that is). And he had big heavy armor and a massive sword. In fact, stretch out your arms as far as you can (let kids stretch). His sword was probably WAY bigger than that! And while you guys might have had fun imagining how to fight a giant, God s family was VERY scared. Nobody would fight him.

GOD HELPED DAVID FIGHT GOLIATH But God loves his family. And he wanted to help rescue them from Goliath. So God sent somebody new to the battlefield, somebody who wasn t afraid to fight Goliath. It was David! But what s crazy is, David was just a kid! He wasn t a soldier at all. He didn t even have a sword. And when the king of Israel offered to give him weapons and armor to fight Goliath, David said no. Let s watch a video to see what happened. As we watch, I want you to see if you can figure out WHY David decided to fight Goliath. Video: God s Story / David and Goliath Did anybody figure out why David fought Goliath? (Let kids respond.) Yes, he wasn t scared because he knew GOD was with him! David wasn t extra strong or powerful but God is! GOD is more powerful than anything or anyone: he is DEFINITELY more powerful than Goliath. WE FACE GIANTS TOO We don t have to stand up and fight giants like Goliath anymore. But you know what? We all have to do hard things sometimes things that seem impossible. To think about giants a little differently, let s stand up. (Let kids stand.) OK, I m going to give you some instructions and let s see if you can follow them. Ready? (Give kids instructions that require physical exertion, but are impossible to actually achieve; model the attempt for them.) Hop on one foot while touching your toes. Jump high enough to touch the ceiling. Pull one foot up to touch your forehead; then stand up straight while keeping your foot on your forehead. Nice try. Go ahead and sit down. (Let kids sit.) We didn t do too well, did we? I didn t see anybody do it quite right, including your leaders! You know, it s OK because those are really silly things to do. But sometimes, we face really hard things that we HAVE to do one thing I ve had to face is (give a personal example of a kid-friendly but genuinely tough thing you ve face and needed to rely upon God in order to conquer). Now close your eyes for a minute (let kids respond). Maybe you ve tried to be kind to a bully or obey an adult when you didn t feel like it. Maybe you ve felt all alone and scared. Maybe you ve lost a special pet and you felt sad. Maybe your teacher makes you read out loud, but you don t know how to read very well. Think about something you ve had to do that s hard (give kids a few moments of silence). Now open your eyes. (Let kids respond.) Those are the giants in your life. But the good news is, if we believe Jesus rescued us, WE are part of God s family. Which means we can trust him to fight for us, like he fought for David. It doesn t mean things will be easy, but it does mean that we can trust God is with us. Remember, Philippians 4:6 says this:

SLIDE: Philippians 4:6 Don t worry about anything. Instead, tell God about everything. Ask and pray. Give thanks to him. When we face a giant hard thing, we can tell God we need his help. We can even thank him right away because we know he s going to help us even if it s hard. Just like God helped David defeat Goliath, God will help US overcome big things too. RESPOND Now we re going to watch a music video about this story. As you watch, I want you to picture God helping YOU with the giant (hard thing) you thought about a moment ago, when you closed your eyes. Music Video: One Rock One Shot WORSHIP Now let s stand up and worship God. Worshiping God means telling him we think he s wonderful! We can do that in lots of different ways. One way is by singing and dancing. Here s a brand new song we can sing and dance to together. The second song reminds us that God is beside us, so we don t have to be afraid! Music Video: Dance Laugh Love (dance moves on screen) Music Video: Bravery (hand motions on screen) PRAY Can somebody come up and thank God for helping us do the impossible?
