In today s Gospel we have the story of the transfiguration of Jesus, and what we might think of as the non-transfiguration of Peter. Peter s response to this event shows that he is still tied to an old way of thinking. First, he thinks that Jesus, Moses, and Elijah are in need of some sort of shelter. Second, he wants to camp out on the mountain of transfiguration rather than make the journey to Jerusalem, where the true glory of Jesus will shine forth on the cross. What saves him from his un-transfigured way of thinking is the voice of God telling him to listen to Jesus. Most of us do not have the benefit of such an audible voice, but we do have the example of Peter with which scripture presents us. We can learn that what we need to do in order to share in the transfiguration of the world that is glimpsed in Jesus own transfiguration is to listen to him, the Son in whom God is well pleased. Lent is traditionally a time of giving things up. Today s Gospel suggests that we need to give up certain old ways of thinking and to actively listen to Jesus in prayerful reflection on scripture. - adapted from Living the Word

From the Pastor s Desk Dear Parishioners, A Season of Sacraments: Both the Faith Formation and School families had their First Reconciliation recently. The children did a fantastic job. They were relaxed and smiling---enjoying this second sacrament in their lives. Their parents and families were all excited about their children receiving the grace and beauty of this sacrament. It s indeed a charming event when we see the little children making their first confession, saying the Act of Contrition, doing penance, and seeking God s grace and blessings. One cannot but be touched and moved by the earnestness and innocence, the transparency and trust, of these children. I wish I could become so earnest and childlike in my relationship with God. I wish I could recover my simplicity and recapture my lost angels. The children teach us a lot about faith, love, and life. No wonder Jesus said: Unless you become like these children, you will not enter the Kingdom of God. The children are all looking forward to their First Communion in April and May. Our parish will become better and holier because of these children receiving these new sacraments. The families of the children are blessed and inspired as well. Let s keep them all in our prayers. Shall we all seek and long for these children s faith and trust, especially in this season of Lent? Archbishop s Annual Appeal (AAA): We are making steady progress in reaching our goal. During our monthlong drive, the names of the donors were placed in the bulletin. There will be another complete list published in the next 2-3 weeks, including the names of the recent donors. Those of you who haven t donated so far, please rush, hurry, hasten! Help us complete the goal of $49,200! If your name is not on that list, you are still lagging behind in practicing the spirit of stewardship--- to strengthen the Archdiocese of which St. Veronica Church is a part. WASC: This is the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, an accrediting commission. Fostering excellence, WASC accreditation recognizes schools that meet an acceptable level of quality, in accordance with established, research-based WASC criteria. Members of this commission visited a couple of months ago and again last week, studying and observing various aspects of our parish school. They came prepared after carefully studying the self-study report that our school had submitted to them. They talked to various people and groups, including me, seeking feedback about how our school is doing. The end result will be the granting of accreditation status for our school for another period of six years. They will highlight the strengths and point out areas for improvement. This is an opportunity for our school to grow and excel further, and become even stronger in faith, academics, and service. I congratulate Principal Kathy Lucchesi, the teachers and staff who have been preparing meticulously for this process of self-examination and recognition by WASC. Ten Practical Things You Can Do in Lent: As you know well, Lent is a time set aside for slowing down and thinking about how we live and love, how our faith journey is, how our family life is, how we relate to larger community, what we do to help those in need, etc. Shall I make 10 practical suggestions for this holy season? 1. Make sure to attend the weekend Mass. 2. If possible, catch a daily Mass either before you go to work or at lunch break near where you work. 3. Read reflectively a chapter each day from one or two of the gospels. 4. Go to confession before Easter. 5. Become more kind toward and respectful of others, starting with your family. 6. Do one thing at least which will connect you with someone sad, poor or in need. 7. Read online some of the sayings and actions of Pope Francis as a way of being inspired. 8. Do one thing by way of faith or service to connect you deeply with the Catholic Church. 9. Do one thing by way of service to connect you with the town/city/world. 10. Appreciate people more readily and generously. Pope Francis s First Anniversary: March 13 last year, Jorge Mario Bergoglio, a cardinal from Buenos Aires, Argentina, and a Jesuit, was elected Pope. The Church and the world have not been the same since. Millions of Catholics around the world have become excited and proud of their Catholic faith. The other Christian churches, other religions, even non-believers are all applauding this Pope as someone extraordinary. We thank God for this Pope and for the new spirit blowing through the church and the world. A question that we can ask is: How does all this excitement about Pope Francis translate for me in terms of a change of heart toward the Five Important F s in my life: fun, faith, family, friendship, and fellowship? Religious Joke: Atheist: "Do you honestly believe that Jonah spent three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish?" Preacher: "I don't know, sir, but when I get to heaven, I'll ask him." Atheist: "But suppose he isn't in heaven?" Preacher: "Then you ask him." Your Friend and Pastor, Father Charles Puthota
