COURSE DESCRIPTION A study aimed at preparing preachers to preach topical theological expositional messages, topical biographical expositional messages, and topical current issue expositional messages. Enrollment limited to 12 students. II. COURSE OBJECTIVES AND RATIONALE The student will read and write to understand the literature and challenges of topical expository preaching (during the pre-residency period). The student will discuss and debate (during residency class seminars) the benefits of communication theory for contemporary preaching. The student will preach, listen to, and critique various topical sermons (during residency presentation sessions). The student will begin to develop a topical expository preaching method (during the residency seminars). The student will model his topical expository preaching method by submitting a high-quality, video of a topical expository sermon (during the post-residency period). The student will relax and enjoy the learning process in every aspect of this course's preparation, participation, and presentation. III. COURSE TEXTBOOKS A. Richard (11 pages) IV. COURSE REQUIREMENTS A. Pre-Resident Assignment 1. Reading and Critiquing Students will thoughtfully study the required readings (969 pages total) and submit to the professor a summary/critique for each reading (excluding the Class Notes) in a Word document format, posted to the professor at his email address by December 15, 2017. Students will be well prepared to contribute in a meaningful and lively way to the classroom discussion, debate, question and answer sessions of the residency period based on their reading. Several class sessions of the residency period will follow a "give-and-take" seminar format lead by the professor. Submit a one-page summary/critique of Kuruvilla s Privilege the Text! and Goleman s Emotional Intelligence. Submit a one-paragraph summary/critique of articles by Warren, Warren, Warren, Warren, Weaver, Bitzer, Booth, Brockriede, Wallace, Richard, Greidanus- Peck-Greidanus combined, Smalley, On Persuasion-Mantaka-Porter-Mullin-Holifield combined, and all four Charisma readings combined. B. Resident Assignment 1. Class Participation Each student will be expected to maintain a high level of involvement in class discussion, debate, question-answer, and class assignments and evaluations based on the reading of the pre-residency period and personal experience and struggle. 2. Topical Biographical Expository Sermon Each student will prepare during pre-residency and be prepared to preach (without notes) in class a 20-25 minute topical biographical expository sermon based on the Old Testament character Caleb. Each student will prepare twelve one-page homiletical outlines to be presented to fellow class members at the time each preacher preaches (on Monday morning, January 1). If the class is full (12 students) only six students will be chosen at random to preach their entire sermon before the class. All outlines will be presented to class members and professor.

Emotional Story Presentation Each student will prepare during pre-residency and be prepared to present (without notes) in class (on Wednesday morning, January 3) a 5-8 minute personal, emotional story (an emotional word picture) as the basis of a persuasive presentation. This presentation is not intended to be a sermon or sermonette. Use the following outline as you develop this assignment: I. Share an emotionally charged story, II. Draw out a moral/principle, III. Challenge the class to act on that moral/principle. C. Post-Resident Assignments (All assignments will be sent directly to the professor through the Pastoral Ministries Office at Dallas Theological Seminary - NOT the D.Min. Office, or at tbwarren@gmail.com.) Both the Personal Model Sermon Strategy Papers and the Personal Model Sermon Outlines and Manuscripts may be written in a non-academic format. However, proper spelling, grammar, etc. will be expected. Please submit as a Word document. 1. Personal Model Sermon Strategy Paper Students will express their motivation (this was my reason for and goal in preaching this message topically) and method (this was the process I followed in preparing and presenting this message topically) for preaching a topical current issue expository sermon on the topic of their choice, but approved by the professor, in typed, double-spaced papers of at least one, but no more than two pages. (Due by March 15, 2018). 2. Personal Model Sermon Outlines and Manuscripts Students will prepare both a separate outline (not to exceed two pages) and a full prose manuscript of a topical current issue expository message on a topic of their choice, but approved by the professor. (Due March 15, 2018). 3. Personal Model Sermons Students will prepare and preach a topical current issue expository sermon specifically designed to illustrate the topical expositional preaching model. This sermon will be preached and recorded in the normal weekly setting of ministry (before a live audience). The sermon will be recorded on high quality video and sent/made available to the professor for evaluation. (Due by March 15, 2018). 4. Course Evaluation Students will submit a 1-2 page typed, double-spaced evaluation of the entire course. The professor will be looking for the most/least helpful portions of the course, suggestions for improving the existing course, and suggestions for future courses of a different emphasis.
