The American incarnation of Mother s Day was created by Anna Jarvis in 1908 and became an official U.S. holiday in 1914. Mother s Day most commonly falls on the second Sunday in May and traditionally involves presenting mothers with flowers, cards and other gifts. Celebrations of mothers and motherhood can be traced back to the ancient Greeks and Romans, The clearest modern precedent for Mother s Day is the early Christian festival known as Mothering Sunday. Once a major tradition in the United Kingdom and parts of Europe, this celebration fell on the fourth Sunday in Lent and was seen as a time when the faithful would return to their mother church the main church in the vicinity of their home for a special service. Over time the Mothering Sunday tradition shifted into a more secular holiday, and children would present their mothers with flowers and other tokens of appreciation. This custom eventually faded in MEMORIAL DAY, MAY 29: On this day, we remember the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. God bless them! The phrase "all gave some; some gave all" is widely attributed to the Korean War veteran and purple heart recipient Howard William Osterkamp from Dent, Ohio. Osterkamp served in the Army from 1951 to 1953, during which he experienced heavy combat in Korea with his unit, the C Company, 5th Regimental Combat Team. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: I was always at peace because of the way my mom treated me. Martina Hingis LANDSCAPE LEADS: Somedays the temperature makes you think it is June, but it really is Spring. The lilacs & honeysuckle are in bloom and the fragrance is intoxicating. Chip has been cutting down dead ash trees that are a threat to falling on our condos. He is reseeding areas that are bare. It is necessary to keep these areas watered anytime it doesn't rain until the grass is established, otherwise the money spent has been wasted. April Flowers fund raiser was a huge success. A great turn-out, lots of fun & a significant donation was provided for the beautification projects in our community. A sincere "thank you" to Rose Ann Bredestege and her Social Committee for organizing this yearly function and to everyone who continually supports us with their generous donations.
