First Presbyterian Church Ascension Sunday Mothering Sunday May 8, 2016 11:00 am Music for Meditation Welcome Gathering Around the Word *Please stand as you are able *Call to Worship Leader: Christ is risen indeed! All: God, like a midwife-skilled and wise and strong- You are always bringing us to birth. Leader: Open our eyes to You this morning All: Nourish and sustain us in the labor of becoming Your kindom on earth. We worship You because it gives us joy to give You thanks and praise. *Hymn 267 Come, Christians Join to Sing Madrid Call to Confession David Capasso Prayer of Confession Faithful God, persistent parent, you weave so many wonderful people into our lives: fathers and mothers, aunts and uncles, friends and neighbors, teachers and preachers. Their gifts and their lives bless us each step of the way. Yet we take more than we give. We are slow to speak words of thanks and slower to care for others as we have been cared for. Unbind our lives today as we remember the faithful women who love us and who weep over our sins even more than we do. (time for silent confession) Faithful God, give us eyes to see the miracles around us and hearts to create miracles for others. Remake us so that, one day voices will have cause to sing our praises too. In the name of the great healer we ask this. Amen.
Assurance of Pardon Leader: Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us also forgive one another. God s peace be with you. People: And also with you, my sisters and brothers. *Passing of the Peace Greet each other in the love & forgiveness of Christ; saying Peace be with you! and responding and also with you! *Gloria Patri (PH 280) Come, O Spirit, dwell among us; Give us words of fire and flame. Help our feeble lips to praise You, Glorify Your holy name. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Three in one; what mystery! We would sing our loud hosannas Now and through eternity. Ebenezer Time with Our Children Hearing the Word Damon Green Anthem Come Unto Me Mary Kay Beall Announcements Prayer of Illumination Scriptures First Lesson Acts 1:1-11 Second Lesson Acts 16:16-34 Leader: This is the Word of God, for the People of God. People: Thanks be to God. Sermon Our Crazy Life Rev. Fred J. Powell, III *Hymn (see insert) O God, In Your Love St. Denio (Tune: Hymn 12 "Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise") O God, in your love, you have made us unique: In gifts and traditions, in service we seek, In race and in culture and family design Diverse are the branches in Jesus the Vine. Lord Jesus, you came to bring God's love on earth; You welcomed the outcasts and showed us our worth. You reached out to people whom others despised You said all are precious in God's loving eyes. Announcing the 7 th Annual Bite The Tail Off Homelessness Charity Crawfish Boil Benefitting Program of Hope Homeless Ministry Lakeview Presbyterian Church 5914 Canal Blvd., New Orleans, La. 70124 Saturday, May 14 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM This annual event held each year at Lakeview Presbyterian church helps to support the mission work of Program of Hope homeless ministry located at First Presbyterian Church on Claiborne Avenue and promises to be a day filled with food, music and fun! Each week, Program of Hope serves both the spiritual and physical needs of between 80-100 homeless men, women, and children in a welcoming and nurturing environment. Funding shelter nights and help providing public transportation are two of the many services that are offered at Program of Hope and to which we have dedicated the funds of this annual event. Our goal this year, is the same as in years past, to receive enough donations/sponsors to cover the cost of the event so that all proceeds for ticket sales go directly to purchasing vouchers. Your continued support and participation is vital to make this event a success and makes a meaningful impact on this vital mission and shares the love of Christ to the lives of the homeless community that it serves. To make a donation or to volunteer for this event, please call Jeff Craig at 504-352-6190. Advance tickets are available (Adult $15 / Children $8) by calling the Lakeview Presbyterian church office at 504-408-7892 or contact Jeff Craig at 504-352-6190.
