Dear Parishioners, I wanted to update you on the Archbishop s Annual Appeal and our campaign to raise funds to replace the Church roof and air conditioning. As of May 7th, 2018 $114,000 in gifts and pledges were received. This sum represents about 170 households in the parish out of 323 registered households. These gifts/pledges range from less than $100 to $50,000. Twenty five of our households contributed at least a $1,000.00 or more. We are so grateful for the generous support of those who participated in this fund raising effort. As you know, the $114,000 falls short of the $300,000 needed for the necessary repairs on the Church. I would ask those who have not yet participated in the Archbishop s Annual Appeal for 2018 to do so. It would be a wonderful 50th anniversary gift to the Church if we had 100% participation. The support of your Church is very much appreciated. Fr. Vincent PLEASE REMEMBER IN YOUR PRAYERS ALL THOSE WHO ARE ILL, HOSPITALIZED OR IN NEED OF SURGERY, ESPECIALLY: Robin Amrhein, Eric Aparentado, Stacey Baier, Kathy Beebe, Sam Bilzer, Cheryl Brown, Clare Carney, Linda Cimino, Joe Clark, John Conrad, Eddie Crockett, Mary Deeley, Lois DeLosa, Gerry Dirscherl, Randy Edwards, Rita Feher, Joan Fischer, Ken Floyd, Bob Frey, John Fricke, Gerry G., Mary Gentile, Theresa Goddard, Joe Hamm, Rita Hartman, Howard Hickey Jr., Joan Hock, Walter Howard III, Doris Jankowski, Eva Kaminaris, Jim Kane, Diane Keller, Sandy Kelsey, Marg Kerner, Joseph Kleiderlein, Anna Knott, Gloria LaCotti, Judy Lowe, Bernie Machovec, Kay McMullen, Howard MeoMartino, Barbara Moore, Nancy Mucci, Auggie Nemec, Joseph Ochab, Dorothy Parker, Harold Payne, Marion Poggioli, Bill Pribyl Jr., Sandy Price, John Puelzt, Pat Rolfes, Kathy Schaub, Charlotte Schaum, Barry Sewell, Atticus Smith, Bob Stark, Ralph Stigliani, Linda Szmanski, Donna Tallent, Nancy Trombetta, Cathy Whitty, Bernard Wiczulis, Gale Wilson and for those listed in the book of the sick. PLEASE PRAY FOR ALL THE DECEASED especially Mary Heid and Marge Puelzt. May they rest peacefully in the loving arms of Jesus. DID YOU KNOW? MOTHERS DAY Celebration of Mothers over the centuries has appeared in varying forms and traditions since and possibly before Roman times. In the 1600s the Church of England instigated Mothering Sunday in recognition of Mary the Mother of Jesus. Later this religious celebration was expanded to include honoring all mothers. As time passed, this celebration slowly disappeared from the church calendar. The seed for Mother s Day that we celebrate today had its beginning in 1858 with Ann Marie Reeves Jarvis a Christian lady who was working to heal the nation after the Civil War. Her strategy was to promote and elevate the important role of mothers and help them to create healthier and more hygienic homes. Ann would teach the mothers basic nursing and safe sanitation practices to be used in the home, which she had learned from her brother who was a famous M.D. When Ann Marie Jarvis passed away after a long illness, one of her two daughters, Anna decided to dedicate her life to her mother s dream of a Mother s Day to honor all mothers around the world. As a Sunday school teacher for twenty years at her church, she was very aware of the fourth of the Ten Commandments, Honor your father and mother and no doubt would have taught this to her students. She shared her desire to bring to fruition her mother s dream and it was readily accepted by her friends. The first such service was held at her church and she handed out her mother s favourite flower, the White Carnation. At first, people observed Mother s Day by attending church and writing letters to their mothers. The modern holiday of Mother's Day was first celebrated in 1908, when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother at St Andrew's Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia. By the early 1920s, Hallmark Cards and other companies had started selling Mother's Day cards.
