Pastor s Column September 19-20, 2015 Who is the greatest? Although our next Presidential election is still more than a year away, many candidates have already been campaigning in earnest for several months. And one candidate in particular, Donald Trump, has confounded the political pundits, dominated the headlines, and consistently topped the Republican polls with his promise to Make America Great Again! A successful businessman and reality TV star, Trump never fails to mention how great he is. And while his catchphrase was first used by Ronald Reagan back in his 1980 Presidential campaign, Trump applied to trademark that phrase more than two years ago and has criticized many of his rivals (whom he considers to be losers ) for using it. He reportedly told a British newspaper he was "disappointed" Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker used it in a speech in May. And Trump previously accused Senator Ted Cruz of stealing the line during the senator's presidential campaign announcement last March. Trump was quoted as saying, "I mean, I get tremendous raves for that line.... I could come up with different lines. You would think they would come up with their own. That is my whole theme." Our gospel reading this weekend relates how Jesus stepped in to resolve a similar childish dispute among his disciples. They had been journeying through Galilee and would soon be headed to Jerusalem and to the Cross which awaited Jesus there. Jesus was teaching and telling his disciples for the second time that the Son of Man is to be handed over to men and they will kill him, and three days after his death the Son of Man will rise. But obviously that message failed to sink in. Mark tells us that the disciples not only did not understand, they were also afraid to question Jesus. They even began to argue among themselves who was to be the greatest. And when Jesus asked them about what they had been arguing about, the disciples had nothing to say. It was the silence of shame. So long as they thought Jesus was not listening and that Jesus had not seen them, the argument about who should be the greatest seemed fair enough, but when that argument had to be stated in the presence of Jesus it was seen in all its unworthiness. And so Jesus called the Apostles to himself and sat down, adopting the formal position of a teacher about to make an important pronouncement to his students, and told them that if they sought for greatness in his kingdom they must find it, not by being first but by being last, and not by being masters, but by being the servants of all. It is not that Jesus seeks to abolish our ambition; rather, he wants to redirect it from an ambition to rule to an ambition to serve. Instead of wanting to have things done for us, Jesus would have us want to do things for others. What an awesome example we have of what it means to be great in the Kingdom of God in our Holy Father Pope Francis who soon will be arriving in our country and in our city. Servant of the servants of God is one of the Pope s titles, first used by Pope St. Gregory the Great more than 1400 years ago but exemplified by Pope Francis who has eschewed living in the Papal Palace for a simple apartment and has sought to bring relief and God s message of mercy to the poor, to migrants displaced by war, and to all those on the peripheries of society. Let s pray for his safe travels and that he may teach us what true greatness is all about. Fr. Bob
