St. Thomas Aquinas Church Iglesia Católica Romana Dear Parishioners, 1501 South Atlantic Boulevard Monterey Park, California 91754 Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 29, 2018 I would like to thank those who participated in our Increased Offertory Program. I appreciate your response and your willingness to help our parish. By returning a Commitment Form you made it clear that you are an active member of our church and how concerned you are about its well being. I am humbled by your support and the good will of so many other parishioners. As a result of the program we have registered new families, received one-time monetary gifts, signed-up new volunteers and sent individuals information on our ministries. Over half of our respondents pledged to increase their contribution to our parish. From the Desk of Our Pastor With each response we receive during the program, it reinforces our standing as a faith community. The parishioners of St. Thomas Aquinas share a wonderful history of faith and giving, and have always responded when called upon. Together, we can carry out our mission and practice the Gospel of Jesus Christ in love and in justice. As a parish we have been doing this, and with God's help, we will continue throughout this century. Thank you for taking this journey with us. Thank you again and may the Lord bless you and those dear to you. Sincerely in Christ, Fr. John Fireworks Stand A Success Many thanks to everyone who supported our Fireworks stand. Our total profit for our 2018 sales was $7,300.00. We would like to acknowledge Jesus Torres who accepted the role of chairperson and provided the leadership required. A very special thanks to our volunteers and the leadership team who put in countless hours. This fund raiser supplements the school operational budget and is crucial in helping them meet their expenses. In Appreciation Thank you to those of you who donated towards the National Needs Combined collection last weekend. Our parish was able to collect a total of $1,567.00, which will be used for the Catholic Communication Campaign to continue its television, radio, and print media ministry and provide exceptional programs of scholarship, research, and service throughout the Catholic Universities or America. SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN Gender divides in childhood can perpetuate abusive behaviors Parents of young children have likely heard the phrase boys will be boys many times usually to excuse so-called typical boy behaviors. But this rationalization can extend dangerously through adulthood, to excuse sexual assault and harassment. The messages received by young children have lasting effects. Boys hear that they need to hide their emotions, so if they are abused, they re less likely to come forward. Girls hear that boys can be rough or rude, and learn to tolerate rather than push back. Eliminating this gender divide early may help combat sexual abuse and assault.
