CHURCH LEADER S GUIDE CHANGE THE WORLD FOR ONE CHILD

Dear Friends, It breaks our heart that over 400 million children are currently living in abject poverty. Many believe their lives don t matter. We know that s not true. God s heart for the poor is clear. It s not enough to help children to go to school, have access to healthcare and food. We also have to show them that they are valued, that they are loved and give them an opportunity to learn about God s love for them. This Compassion Sunday, will you share God s heart for the poor and the work of Compassion with your church? Will you give your congregation the chance to come alongside a child in poverty? Together we can change the world, one child at a time. To sponsor a child is one of the most life-transforming things you can do to bring to both individual lives and the life of your whole church family. DENNIS GREENIDGE 02 WWW.COMPASSION.IE/COMPASSIONSUNDAY 03

we'll give you EVERYTHING YOU NEED We know your time is precious, which is why we ve created a handy range of resources to hold a service focusing on God s heart for the poor and children living in poverty. This includes presentation outlines, a PowerPoint, sermons, children s resources and a great film to bring everything to life. Compassion impacts individuals in the church because it brings overseas mission to their doorstep and lifs their faith. The sponsor who gave you this pack is passionate about sharing God s heart for the poor and will help you to run a Compassion Sunday Service. All you have to do is say yes. STAN WARREN 04 WWW.COMPASSION.IE/COMPASSIONSUNDAY 05

giving your congregation THE OPPORTUNITY WHOEVER WELCOMES ONE SUCH CHILD IN MY NAME WELCOMES ME. MATTHEW 18:5 Imagine what the Church would be like if everyone became personally involved in mission. Sponsorship gives individuals, couples and families in your church the opportunity to be the hands and feet of Jesus by supporting and discipling a child in poverty. It s not just the financial support which counts. By sharing prayers, letters and cards, members of your church can show a child that God loves and cares for them. Sponsors become missionaries without even stepping outside their front door! As Matthew 18:5 states, whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me. 06 WWW.COMPASSION.IE/COMPASSIONSUNDAY 07

we are EXPERIENCED Compassion has over 60 years of experience in releasing children from poverty in Jesus name. We work in 26 countries where we support over 1.7 million children, at nearly 7,000 churchbased projects. We work with the poorest of the poor, regardless of their faith. CHRIST-CENTRED Jesus is the inspiration for what we do and how we do it. We re proud of our Christian identity and we believe that when young people come to see how precious they are to God, true transformation takes place. CHILD-FOCUSED We re specialists in child development. We draw on our experience to ensure the programmes we run are tailored to the specific needs of the children in the communities where they live. By changing the life of one child, we ve seen the positive impact resonate throughout their family and community. CHURCH-BASED We believe the Church is God s plan for the world. We help build up and resource local churches in the developing world to serve children in their community. These churches become beacons of hope, not just for the children but for the community as a whole. HOW MUCH DOES SPONSORSHIP COST? It costs 30 a month to sponsor a child. For every 1 you give to Compassion Ireland, a minimum of 80c goes directly to your sponsored child, 5c is spent on facilitating your relationship and 15c goes towards getting the next child sponsored, administration and governance costs. There s no quick fix for global poverty. But we can make a huge difference to the life of one child. Jane Alam is a Compassion graduate who was born into a slum community where around 10,000 people shared just one tap and two toilets. He was once one child waiting to be sponsored. TOGETHER WE CAN CHANGE THE WORLD, ONE CHILD AT A TIME When he got sponsored, Jane was the first in his community to go to school. He received medical check-ups, food and even things like soap and toothpaste. But Jane describes the greatest gifts were hearing about God s love for him and building a relationship with his sponsor. Today, Jane has gone further than anyone could ever have dreamed. He finished high school at the top of his class, got a Bachelor s in Business Administration and won a scholarship to the University of Manchester. In 2014, he finished his Masters with first class honours. Jane is now a Compassion sponsor himself. He sponsors Sankritha, a little girl with a big smile who lives in a slum community made up of abandoned drain pipes. Jane is living proof that the cycle of poverty can be broken. There are many children just like Jane who are waiting for an opportunity. By holding a Compassion Sunday in your church, you can help us reach them. You can help us change the world, one child at a time. SPEAK UP FOR THOSE WHO CANNOT SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES, FOR THE RIGHTS OF ALL WHO ARE DESTITUTE.
