Friends of Jesus and Mary 5 th Sunday of Easter May 2, 2010 Readings: Acts 14: 21-27; Psalm 144; Revelation 21: 1-5; John 13: 31-35 The New Commandment After Judas had left, Jesus said: Now the Son of Man s glory is revealed; now God s glory is revealed through him. And if God s glory is revealed through him, then God will reveal the glory of the Son of Man in himself, and he will do so at once. My children, I shall not be with you very much longer. You will look for me, but I tell you now what I told the Jewish authorities, You cannot go where I am going. And now I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. If you have love for one another, then everyone will know that you are my disciples. (John 13: 31-35) Reflection The sign of Christians is the love for one another. What distinguishes Christians is that, despite difficulties, they can continue to love, going beyond discrimination, hatreds, and hurts. We are invited to love like Christ did, with a real interest for those who were poor and for their problems. With respect and acceptance for each person. Listening, believing in the capacity of people to do good. Being a friend of Jesus inside is not enough. We have to show it. Who is it difficult for you to love? Are there people whom you really dislike? What are their ideas about love? Share. Activity In the next page you will find an activity Grow in the love of God Do it with the children and show them how we can grow in the love of God and our brothers and sisters with our good deeds. There is also another activity that you can use, according the age of the children. Prayer Lord, you ask us to love one another with a love that is not easy because it demands forgiveness, understanding and inclusion even of our enemies. But we know that this love is possible because you loved us this way. Help us to be signs of your love for the world. Amen

Grow In God's Love You will grow in God's love all your lives if you love him and love others. This flower can help you to keep track of how your love grows. Color the flower and flower pot. Lightly color the stem. Cut the slit on the leaf carefully. Slide the stem of the flower through the slit, toward the back of the pot. Lower the flower all the way down. Each day you do one of the good deeds that you see printed on the stem, you may make the flower grow taller. Just pull it up a little. You, too, will grow in God's love! When you have done all the good deeds, tape the back of the stem to the flower pot. Friends of Jesus and Mary 6 th Sunday of Easter May 9, 2010 Readings: Acts 15:1-2, 22-29; Psalm 66 Revelation 21, 10-14, 22-23; John 14:23-29 Jesus answered him, Those who love me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and my Father and I will come to them and live with them. Those who do not love me do not obey my teaching. And the teaching you have heard is not mine, but comes from the Father, who sent me. I have told you this while I am still with you. The Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and make you remember all that I have told you. Peace is what I leave with you; it is my own peace that I give you. I do not give it as the world does. Do not be worried and upset; do not be afraid. You heard me say to you, I am leaving, but I will come back to you. If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father; for he is greater than I. I have told you this now before it all happens, so that when it does happen, you will believe. (John 14: 23-29) Reflection God is everywhere but seeks loving hearts where he can dwell. This is the real beauty and glory of a human city. Is God present in our family? The peace that God provides is not based on the absence of conflict and division. Jesus brings peace that is based on total trust in God, the forgiveness of others, a commitment to serve, and hope in a better future that will come from God. What difficulties, tensions, or violence affect the peace of mind of the children? How do they and their families experience and understand peace? How do you picture a family or people at peace to be? Are you at peace, for instance, when you tell lies to your parents, or when you think others have more than you do, or when you want to be superior to your siblings and classmates? What will Jesus mean when he says that leaves us a different kind of peace? Activity Bring papers divided in three columns. On them write peace, anxiety, fear. Ask them to write under each column what they feel and how they will bring this week the peace Jesus talks about to others. What will they do to correct the things they are doing wrong. Share what each one will do this week. Prayer Lord, be our peace when we refuse to hold grudge. When we sincerely forgive one another; when we are thankful for the good things you have given us; when, in the midst of difficulty, we help one another to trust in you. Amen

Joachim and Anne were so proud of their new baby daughter. They gave her the name Mary which meant royal incense She would become a special offering to God. Joachim and Anne knew that Mary was a special gift from God. Soon after she was born they went to the temple and dedicated their child to God. When she was very young Mary went to temple school. Here she learned more about God and listened to the Bible stories of God s promise and plan. Mary s mother also taught her how to cook and bake bread. She would help prepare meals and care for the house with her mother, Anne. In school Mary learned to weave and sew. Often she sat working on large rooms with other young girls weaving colorful robes. They would talk about their dreams Early each morning Mary would go to draw water from the well in the center of the village. All of them came for the day s water supply.

As Mary grew older she learned the Psalms. These are special prayers from the Bible. Mary prayed often and grew closer to God. When Mary was fourteen she left the temple school and moved with her parents back to Nazareth, their home. She was sad saying goodbye to her school friends. Mary became engaged to Joseph at Nazareth. He was a loving and sincere young man. Everyone celebrated that there would soon be a wedding. Soon after she was engaged a very special thing happened to Mary. While she was praying God s angel came to tell her that God had chosen her to be the mother of the Savior Before Jesus was born Mary went to visit her cousin, Elizabeth, who lived near Jerusalem. Elizabeth was also going to have a baby. Her son, John, would be Jesus cousin and friend. Mary stayed with Elizabeth. They thanked God for loving them and for their special children. Mary and Elizabeth has always loved little children.

An Angel also came to Joseph while he was sleeping. The angel told him that Mary s baby was God s child. Joseph would marry and Jesus would be a son to him Before Jesus was born Joseph and Mary had to go to Bethlehem to register as citizens. They made a long journey and when they arrived could not find a room. The only shelter that Mary and Joseph could find was a stable in a cave used for animals. Here, Jesus the Savior was born. Mary, his mother, wrapped him in a blanket and placed him in a manger for a crib Mary would fix Jesus a snack when he came form school. It might have been honey on fresh bread. They would talk together and enjoy each other s company. Mary loved Jesus. Once when they were in Jerusalem for Passover Jesus got lost. Mary was heartbroken. The next day she and Joseph found him talking with al the teachers in the temple. As Jesus got older he remained at the center of Mary s thoughts. After Joseph died, Jesus stayed on with Mary. They always talked together and enjoyed each other s company.

Mary made a white robe for her son. She knew He would soon leave to teach God s message. She would miss Him very much and always be praying for Him. Once at wedding to which Mary and Jesus had come the waiters had no more wine. Mary asked Jesus to help. He performed a miracle turning water into wine just because His mother asked Him As Jesus went about the land preaching and teaching Mary was one of His followers. She listened to her son, prayed with Him and His friends and lived His message in her life Mary s heart broke when she say Jesus suffer and die on the cross. As she bravely stood beneath the cross Jesus spoke and said, This is your mother. She is our mother and she care for us. After Jesus left the earth His friends and followers stayed together. Mary was very much at the center of this new Christian family. They prayed that the Holy Spirit would come among them. Because of her love and faithfulness Mary was crowned Queen of the Universe. Till the end of all time blessings and help will come to us form Jesus just because His mother asks Him.

Friends of Jesus and Mary Ascension of the Lord May 13, 2010 Readings: Acts 1, 1-11 Psalm 46, Hebrews 9, 24-48; 10, 19-23 Luke 24, 45-53 Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, and said to them, This is what is written: the Messiah must suffer and must rise from death three days later. And in his name the message about repentance and the forgiveness of sins must be preached to all nations, beginning in Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. And I myself will send upon you what my Father has promised. But you must wait in the city until the power from above comes down upon you. Then he led them out of the city as far as Bethany, where he raised his hands and blessed them. As he was blessing them, he departed from them and was taken up into heaven. They worshiped him and went back into Jerusalem, filled with great joy, and spent all their time in the temple giving thanks to God. (Luke 24, 45-53) Reflection Jesus goes to heaven but he promises the Spirit which will help us and give us strength to be his witness, taking his messages to others. Jesus sends his friends to do his work; that is to serve and help others, to communicate that God loves them, to share what we have, to respect everyone as the image of God, and to strive for justice. What can each one of us do? Share Activity In the following page you will find a script to act the Ascension of the Lord. It is based on Acts1,1-11. Bring customs for the children to wear. Prayer Lord, sometimes when we don t get what we wished for we get frustrated. We want to believe in your promise and keep our hope placed in you. Send your Spirit upon us that with his power and light we can continue your work. Make us witnesses, Amen

Based on Acts 1:1-14 & Matthew 26,16,20 Theatrical play for the feast of Ascension. Characters: Narrator Andrew Peter Mary Thomas Angel # 1 John Angel # 2 Jesus Narrator: Today it has been 40 days since the celebration of Easter. It is a very important day for us who follow Jesus. We assist Mass just like any other Sunday. But, what do we celebrate today? (Instrumental background music) All the disciples, including Jesus should be backstage. At this moment Peter and Thomas enter the stage and walk around while talking. Thomas: These last 40 days have been the best days of my life. Peter: Since Jesus resurrection, I feel like he s closer to us than ever before. Thomas: I hope that things will stay like this for the rest of our lives. John: (his voice is heard from the backstage where Jesus and the other disciples are) Peter! Tomas! Jesus is with us right now, he wants you to come over here. Jesus: Do you remember what John the Baptist used to say? Andrés: I do! John would say: I baptize people with water, but the one who is coming after me will baptize you with the Holy Spirit. Jesus: That s right. Very soon you will receive the grace that was promised by my father Peter: Are you going to perform a great miracle? Thomas: Will you make everyone believe in you? Mary: Are you going to give us a special mission, my son? Jesus: I want you to go around the world tell everyone the good news. Baptize them in the name of the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit. Peter: Lord, How will we teach other people? We ve never been to school ourselves. Andrew: I can t speak any foreign languages, I would be scare to go to another land. The Ascension of Jesus to Heaven Jesus: Do not fear! You will receive a special power and knowledge when the Holy Spirit arrives, then you will become my witnesses Mary: Then, my beloved Son, what should we do now? Jesus: Return to Jerusalem and wait there, It won t be a long time. (Jesus extends his hands and gives his blessing, like a priest would do at Mass) Jesus: Now I bless all of you, and don t forget that I m with you always. (Angeles # 1 & # 2 come forth and step in front of Jesus. Jesus disappears leaving the scene). Thomas: I can t believe what s happening! Peter: I wonder when we will be able to see Jesus again. Angel # 1: People of Galilee, what are u still doing here? Angel # 2: Jesus will return at the end of the world, but meanwhile you all have a mission to accomplish. (The angels leave) Peter: The angels are right, let s go to Jerusalem, like Jesus told us to do. Mary: Yes, we can all pray together so that the Holy Spirit may come. (Peter walks and the rest follow him, encouraged by Mary s words You can play music at this point or sign a hymn to the Holy Spirit)

Friends of Jesus and Mary 7 th Sunday of Easter May 16, 2010 Readings: Acts 7:55-60 ; Psalm 96; Revelations 22,12-14,16-17,20; John 17:20-26 I pray not only for them, but also for those who believe in me because of their message. I pray that they may all be one. Father! May they be in us, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they be one, so that the world will believe that you sent me. I gave them the same glory you gave me, so that they may be one, just as you and I are one: I in them and you in me, so that they may be completely one, in order that the world may know that you sent me and that you love them as you love me. Father! You have given them to me, and I want them to be with me where I am, so that they may see my glory, the glory you gave me; for you loved me before the world was made. Righteous Father! The world does not know you, but I know you, and these know that you sent me. I made you known to them, and I will continue to do so, in order that the love you have for me may be in them, and so that I also may be in them. (John 17: 20-26) Reflection One of the greatest witness we as Christians can give is the unity, which is not thinking all the same, but seeking the common good, respecting diversity. Our unity and witness are based on Jesus Christ who gives us living waters and is our beginning and our end. Jesus is the bread of life, the bread of unity. In the Eucharist we all share in the same bread, which is the body of the Lord and drink of the same cup, his blood. In doing so, we become one with Jesus and with one another as members of the Body of Christ, the church. Explain the word martyr. Martyrs are those who, In spite of persecution, continue firm in their discipleship of Jesus, forgive those who persecute them and remain united to God and to everyone. Stephen was one of them. Do we have a strong faith like Stephen, that is not deviated from God s will by either treat or flattery? Have they ever been martyrs when they have done good even if they were criticized or laughed for it? Share Activity Bring a blank sheet of paper and ask the children to write in I it what have they done for the good of your family or community this week. Example: house work, forgive someone you have hurt, heard patiently someone that needs advise, help with home work to a classmate, etc. Encourage them to make a commitment this week for the unity and wellbeing of the community. Share. Prayer Lord, sometimes we judge the people around us harshly and we are not able to acknowledge our sinfulness. But you forgive us regardless of what we have done. Give us understanding. Give us the strength to start on a new path with you. Amen

Friend of Jesus and Mary Pentecost May 23, 2010 Readings: Acts 2: 1-11; Psalm 103; Romans 8, 8-17 John 14, 15-16.23b-26 If you love me, you will obey my commandments. I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, who will stay with you forever. Judas said Lord, how can it be that you will reveal yourself to us and not to the world. Jesus answered him, Those who love me will obey my teaching. (John 14, 15-16.23b-26) Reflection Speak about the story. When are Jesus friends less scare? What do they do then? As they receive the Holy Spirit, its gifts and fruits, their fear is gone. Jesus tells us that his Spirit is joy, love, and unity rather than selfishness, division, or jealousy. How can you tell if the Spirit of Jesus is in your group? (If there is generosity, kindness, peace, patience, joy. Explain the gift and the fruits of the Holy Spirit. Share Activity Dramatize the coming of The Holy Spirit using the first reading Acts 2,1-11.We suggest that the leader of the group do the narration, to but more action on it. You can prepare some tongues from red construction paper with the gifts of the Spirit. Then explain each gift to the child and pray over them according to the gift he or she got.. In the following pages you will find two activities. Prayer Come, Holy Spirit. Come to give us sweetness and gentleness and so we could extend our hand instead of judging and condemning. Come Holy Spirit to give us trust and we will be sustained in our fears, knowing that God is our faithful friend. Amen

Friends of Jesus and Mary Holy Trinity May 30, 2010 Readings: Proverbs 8, 22-31; Psalm 8; Romans 5: 1-5; John 16, 12-15 I have much more to tell you, but now it would be too much for you to bear. When, however, the Spirit comes, who reveals the truth about God, He will lead you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own authority, but he will speak of what he hears and will tell you of things to come. He will give me glory, because he will take what I say and tell it to you. All that my Father has is mine; that is why I said that the Spirit will take what I give him and tell it to you. (John 16, 12-15) Reflection The relationships of The Holy Trinity are the model of the right relationships that must exist in the family, society and particularly the church. Paul in the second reading tells us that, in the midst of difficulties, we learn patience, a steadfast faith, and hope which gives us courage to continue living. Talk with the children about the people they love. How do they relate to them? Can they tell them all their secrets? Is there any person with whom they would like to be very close, united in hearts. Is there something hindering it? How do they feel about it? What would you like to ask Jesus about being one with the Holy Spirit? When you love someone very much, sometimes it seems as if you think the same things and can read other s mind. This is the way Jesus would like you to love him and everyone around you, because that is the way Jesus loves you. Share Activity Explain the children the characteristics of each of the three Divine persons. The Father create us, The Son redeem us and The Holy Spirit gave us his love. You can bring a boil egg to the group. Explain that As the egg has three different parts the yolk, the white and the cover. It is only one egg. In God there are three different persons but only ONE God. Prayer Lord, you call us to model our family after yours; the Trinity. May our words be full of love and interest for the good of each. May our actions at home show that we seek the good of others. May our gatherings be full of joy because we share your life. Amen
