De a r Pa r i s h i o n e r s o f St. An t h o n y o f Pa d u a Ch u r c h & Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church, A FATHER S DAY BLESSINGS Dads, congratulations are in order on this Father s Day. Thanks for your sacrifice. Thanks for your wisdom and your willingness to bring good out of your children. Keep up the good work. May blessings and love of our Heavenly Father be yours in abundance this Father s Day and always. Happy Father s Day! Swiss Study Shows Importance of Fathers Good Work A Swiss survey s data illustrates why a Dad s participation in church is important to family life: If a father does not go to church, only 1 in 50 of the children will attend church in the future. If a father regularly or irregularly goes to church, and the mother does not, the children will attend church 66% to 75% of the time. If the father does not, and the mother does, the children will attend church only 33% of the time. Dad you are important to the spiritual and human formation of your children and of your family. Walk with a humble heart with God and be strong in faith. Your leadership makes a difference. Keep up the good work. Prayer to St. Joseph the Ever-Attentive Beloved Saint Joseph, during your life on earth, you were ever-attentive to the needs of the Holy Mother of God and her ever-blessed Son, Christ-God. Now, in heaven, we believe that you are ever-attentive to the needs and concerns of the brothers and sisters of Christ Jesus who have become in baptism, sons and daughters of his Heavenly Father. Be attentive now, my beloved patron, to the concerns which I place before you in prayer. Ask our loving Father, through Christ-God and the prayers of your Holy Spouse, the Theotokos, to look favorably upon my request and, if it be to the glory of his name, for the good of humankind and the salvation of my soul, to grant my prayer. For all glory, honor and worship is his due now and always and forever and ever. Amen. Composed by Archimandrite Herbert May IMPRIMATUR +Jude Speyrer, Bishop of Lake Charles 20 December 1990 WHY DO WE DO THAT? CATHOLIC TRADITIONS EXPLAINED Question: One of my coworkers said that Catholics believe we kill Christ again when we celebrate the Mass since it is his sacrifice. I know that is not right, but how do we explain it? Answer: We do indeed believe that the Mass is the unbloody sacrifice of Jesus on the cross and we believe that the sacrifice is made present again on the altar not to repeat it, but to join ourselves to it. We are joined to the saving work of Christ, not just simply remembering it. The closest thing we might have in our culture is when a couple saves some wedding cake in the freezer, and on their first anniversary they may watch their wedding video and eat the cake, all to recapture the moment. The Jews celebrate a Seder meal, not to remember the Passover, but to participate in it through the ritual foods, questions, and readings. The Catechism of the Catholic Church describes the Mass as the Holy Sacrifice, because it makes present the one sacrifice of Christ (#1330). To think that we must sacrifice Christ over and over again would negate what he did on Calvary. To celebrate and renew it each day allows us to participate in it. That is the source and summit of Christian life (#1324). Gospel for the Solemnity of THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST, Cycle A - John 6:51-58 The Jews quarreled among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat? From the beginning, the Eucharist has been a source of controversy. Some people have always found the teaching difficult to accept. But as Catholics, the Blessed Sacrament is at the heart of our worship and our spirituality; we go to Mass to share in the holy sacrifice of Jesus body and blood, and we receive spiritual nourishment from partaking of this heavenly food. As Jesus himself tells us in today s Gospel, Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him. From this passage it is clear that Jesus intended the Eucharist to be a tremendous gift for us, for whoever eats this bread will live forever. This of course is because the bread is Christ s flesh for the life of the world. In other words, just as he gave his body on the cross to save us from our sins, so too this same flesh is given for us at every Mass to strengthen our weakness and unite us more deeply to our Savior. Receiving Communion isn t like taking a magic pill, however. We must beware of reducing this sacrament to

No, it is quite possible to receive Communion unworthily and reject its spiritual efficacy. Just like the benefits of a healthy meal can be undone by a habit of indulging on junk food, so too we can prevent Holy Communion from having its full benefits when we crowd our souls with vices and sins. If, on the other hand, we wish to let this sacrament of divine grace flourish, we should receive it with a sincere spirit of gratitude and reverence, praying that we may be made worthy to receive such a gift. Questions for the Week John 6:51-58 - Jesus uses the metaphor living bread in reference to himself. What makes this such a powerful and meaningful metaphor in today s reading? Deuteronomy 8:2-3, 14b-16a - Just before entering the Promised Land, Moses reminded the Israelites of the manna sent from heaven to them during their forty years in the desert. Why do you think Moses kept emphasizing this was a food unknown to your fathers? 1 Corinthians 10:16-17 - Written around 55 AD, Paul offers us in 1 Corinthians the New Testament s earliest witness of the Eucharist. What does Paul s language of participation in the body and blood of Christ mean to you? Page 3

The Sea of Galilee obeyed your order and returned to its former quietude. You are still the Master of land and sea. We live in the shadow of a danger over which we have no control: the Gulf, like a provoked and angry giant, can awake from its seeming lethargy, overstep its conventional boundaries, invade our land and spread chaos and disaster. During this hurricane season we turn to you, O loving Father. Spare us from past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with the passing of time. O Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our Beloved Mother, we ask you to plead with your Son in our behalf, so that spared from the calamities common to this area and animated with a true spirit of gratitude, we will walk in the footsteps of your divine Son to reach heavenly Jerusalem where a stormless eternity awaits us.
