St Catherine of Siena T: 9743 2166 E: principal@scmeltonwest.catholic.edu.au W: www.scmeltonwest.catholic.edu.au NEWSLETTER Term 4, Week 8 November 25th 2016 Advent Week 1 ~ The Candle of Hope This candle reminds us of the prophets, those special people who brought God s word to others during the hundreds of years before Jesus was born. The prophets told them what God was going to do, and they instructed the people on how to get ready for the coming of Jesus. The Lord said, The time is coming when I will fulfil the promise that I made to the people of Israel and Judah. At that time I will choose as king a righteous descendant of David. He will do what is right and just throughout the land Jeremiah 23:5 Dear Families This coming Sunday we celebrate the First Week of Advent, a sign that we are now in the Season of Advent and preparing to celebrate the birth of Jesus at Christmas. In this busy end of year and pre-christmas time it is important to reflect on the message of Christmas, it is a time to reflect on God s plan for us and to thank him for his love and mercy. A time to be thankful for the gift of his Son, who put aside his glory to become human and stand alongside us, and ultimately offer his life for our redemption, the ultimate gift of love. There are many symbols and rituals during Advent which help to guide our reflections; Advent calendars, Advent wreaths and the Jesse Tree. The Jesse Tree tells the story of the Bible from Creation to the Christmas Story. Isaiah 11:1 says "A shoot will spring forth from the stump of Jesse, and a branch out of his roots." Jesse was the father of King David and so the Jesse Tree was named. It is a way to tell the Story of God in the Old Testament, and to connect the Season of Advent and our hope and anticipation with the faithfulness of God across the ages. The Branch is a sign of newness which became a way to talk about the expected messiah and in the Jesse Tree it is said to symbolise Jesus. Each day a new ornament is placed on the tree, these all represent significant people and events in the Old and New Testament and although there are various versions some common symbols are a rainbow for Noah, a tent for Abraham, a coloured coat for Joseph, a burning bush for Moses, an apple for Adam and Eve, a whale for Jonah and a baby in a manger or cross for Jesus. This Friday we will have an Advent Liturgy in the Church at 2:30pm and you are all most welcome to join us, this liturgy will be led by our Year 6 students. It is surprising how quickly we have come to the end of the year, so that accounts can be finalised I ask all families to ensure that they are up to date with the payment of fees. The Finance Committee will be following up on all outstanding accounts in the coming weeks. Best wishes for a great week Carmel Marantelli PRINCIPAL
