Service of Worship All Saints Sunday November 6, 2016 Eleven o clock in the morning Bridging Faith and Learning 18 th Century Russian Icon of Christ and His Saints, via Creative Commons Today is All Saints Sunday, when we give thanks for the worldwide communion of our brothers and sisters in Christ, in past, present, and future ages. In this morning s Scripture readings, the apostle Paul prays for the Ephesians that they would come to understand the glorious inheritance of being saints in Christ s church. In Luke s Gospel, Jesus teaches about those who will be blessed in the Kingdom of God and those who are warned of woe to come. This weekend we also celebrate all who have followed God s calling as participants in the PathWays Fellows program over the course of its history.

The congregation is invited to reflect silently during the prelude as a time of prayer and meditation. The Chapel welcomes families with children. If at any time during the service your child needs a place for active play, please know there is a nursery in the Chapel basement. Gathering Carillon Prelude Schmücke dich, o liebe Seele, BWV 654 Johann Sebastian Bach (Deck Thyself, My Soul, with Gladness) (1685 1750) Choral Introit I Heard a Voice from Heaven John Goss (1800 1880) I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, From henceforth, blessed are the dead which die in the Lord. Even so, saith the Spirit: for they rest from their labors. Greeting and Announcements Revelation 14:13 *Processional Hymn 711 (found in the hymnals located in the pew racks) For All the Saints sine nomine *Prayer of Confession and Words of Assurance (in unison) Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways to the glory of your name. Amen. *Peace (All exchange signs and words of God s peace.) Proclamation Prayer for Illumination (in unison) Holy God, your glory is proclaimed in every age: as we rejoice in the faith of your saints, come now to illuminate your holy word and inspire us to follow their example; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. New Testament Lesson Ephesians 1:15 23 (NT page 181) Lector: This is the word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. *Gradual Hymn 142 (stanza 1) If Thou But Suffer God to Guide Thee (All turn to face the Gospel Procession.) wer nur den lieben gott

*Gospel Lesson Luke 6:20 36 (NT page 60) Lector: This is the word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. *Gradual Hymn 142 (stanzas 2 3) If Thou But Suffer God to Guide Thee Sermon Is Jesus Post-Bias? Response Call to Prayer Minister: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Minister: Let us pray. wer nur den lieben gott Prayers of the People (The congregation responds to each petition: Hear our prayer. ) Offertory Anthem I ll Praise My Maker I ll praise my Maker while I ve breath; and when my voice is lost in death, praise shall employ my nobler powers. My days of praise shall ne er be past, while life, and thought, and being last, or immortality endures. Happy are they whose hopes rely on Israel s God, who made the sky and earth and seas, with all their train; whose truth for ever stands secure, who saves th oppressed and feeds the poor, for none shall find God s promise vain. The Lord pours eyesight on the blind; the Lord supports the fainting mind and sends the laboring conscience peace. God helps the stranger in distress, the widow and the fatherless, and grants the prisoner sweet release. I ll praise my God who lends me breath; and when my voice is lost in death, praise shall employ my nobler powers. My days of praise shall ne er be past, while life, and thought, and being last, or immortality endures. old 113 th Lloyd Pfautsch (1921 2003) Isaac Watts A child and youth member of the Congregation at Duke University Chapel bring forward offerings collected in the children and youth Sunday School classes.

*Doxology lasst uns erfreuen Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise God, all creatures here below; Alleluia, Alleluia! Praise God above, ye heavenly host, Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia. Thanksgiving and Communion *All Saints Celebration of Communion The celebrant and congregation will sing the responses to sine nomine, the tune for For All the Saints located on page 711 in the hymnal. Celebrant: Lift up your hearts and raise them to the Lord, and render thanks to God, the Lord of all. With saints and angel hosts we join in song: Celebrant: You gave yourself, O God, to dwell on earth as Word made flesh and prophecy fulfilled; the saints gave their lives as witness to your grace. Celebrant: Lord Jesus Christ, the night he was betrayed, with bread and cup, to his disciples said, This is my blood and body given for you. Celebrant: Accept our sacrifice of thanks and praise, as we recall Christ s passion and his death, who rose victorious and will come again. Celebrant: May bread and wine become Christ s flesh and blood; may we unite with him and all the world, and bring us to feast with all the saints in heaven. *The Lord s Prayer (All are encouraged to pray the Lord s Prayer in the language of their choosing. The English version is number 895 in the hymnal.) Sharing of the Bread and Wine All who love Christ, earnestly repent of their sins, and seek to be at peace with God and neighbor are invited to receive Communion. Wine is used for Communion. If you would prefer to receive grape juice, it is available upon request at the Communion station near the main entrance of the Chapel, on the pulpit side. If you have a gluten allergy, there is a server near the Memorial Chapel who will be ready to serve you gluten-free wafers and wine. If you will not receive Communion, you are welcome to come forward to receive a blessing, indicated by crossing your arms over your chest.

God be in mine eyes and in my looking. God be in my mouth and in my speaking. God be in my heart and in my thinking. God be at my end and in my departing. Postlude Fantasy in G Minor, BWV 542/1 J.S. Bach Carillon *All who are able may stand. Learning the Liturgy of the Chapel God s Word calls for a response. In scripture, song, and sermon, we hear of God s grace shown to us in Jesus Christ. God speaks, and we are to respond. One of the ways we respond is by affirming our faith in the triune God by reciting the Apostles Creed. This statement of faith, developed by the early church, offers a brief summary of God s merciful work in our world. Because this ancient creed is recited by Christians around the world, it unites us with believers of all times and places and reminds us we are part of the catholic, or universal, church. Together we respond to God s Word by saying I believe.
