Dover, New Hampshire s Annunciation parish making Final preparations for MBFgocm CoNFerence 2011! This year s Annual Federation Conference is being hosted by the Annunciation Church of Dover, New Hampshire from Friday, November 4 through Sunday, November 6, 2011. The Conference Committee, under the leadership of Choir Director, Federation District 1 Supervisor and Conference Coordinator Siroun Roubian-Braun and parish priest Rev. Fr. Costin Popescu, is finalizing the activities for what promises to be a wonderful weekend in historic Dover. Special hotel arrangements have been made and registration materials are available on the Metropolis of Boston Federation Web site. Special workshops and a walking tour of Dover have been planned and the entertainment at Saturday night s Grand Banquet promises to be the best ever! The entire Annunciation community is a buzz with excitement and anticipation as everyone is busy making sure every last detail is perfect for their guests. If you haven t done so already, please fill out your registration forms and make your hotel reservations today. The Holy Liturgy of the Greek Orthodox Church by Triante C. Kefalas Triante C. Kefalas was born in Greece in the late 1800s. He attended the Dueheana Opera School for six years and performed in concerts throughout America where critics praised him for his brilliant classic tenor voice. He taught classical music in Boston for twelve years. While in Boston Mr. Kefalas began to compose and arrange music for The Holy Liturgy of the Greek Orthodox Church that was, in his words, arranged to be sung by the youthful and comparatively untrained church choir. Patriarch Athenagoras, then Archbishop of America and former Bishop of Boston, heard several choirs in the Diocese of Triante C. Kefalas Boston sing Mr. Kefalas music. His Eminence particularly liked the style of the music which, he said, corresponds perfectly to our ecclesiastical tradition. He recommended that Mr. Kefalas take on the responsibility of organizing choirs in each of the other New England churches. He was given the title Organizer of Choirs in New England and was entrusted with fifteen choirs. The Executive Board unanimously selected the Kefalas music to be taught and sung at its annual Conference Liturgy in November 2011. The Federation Board felt it was important to bring back and honor this historic and beautiful liturgical composition that was among the first written in four-part harmony for Greek Orthodox Church choirs in America. The music is relatively simple and based on the Church s Byzantine melodies. Conference 2010 Choir - Arlington, MA MBFgocm CoNFerence 2010 - St. Athanasius Church, Arlington, MA After all the planning and anticipation, Conference 2010 is over, but it will not soon be forgotten. Special thanks to His Eminence Metropolitan Methodios, Rev. Fr. Nicholas Kastanas and Stella Pathiakis, along with the St. Athanasius Conference Cochairs who worked for over six months and did an outstanding job in planning for one of the best conferences in the history of the Metropolis of Boston. We were blessed with a truly talented and dedicated team of guest conductors and organists. First and foremost, Gregory Condakes of Weston, MA who directed the Adult Choir was truly outstanding and inspired the choir to heights never before achieved. Athena Marken, also of Weston, was phenomenal on the organ and seemed to be a true extension of Greg, responding to his every gesture with her beautiful playing. The Youth Choir, under the direction of Nicole VanKuilenburg of Arlington, MA and accompanied by Anthony Rozakis of Somerville, MA, inspired the congregation with their angelic voices and earned many well-deserved praises from His Eminence Metropolitan Methodios. The key to the incredible success of the Conference was in the preparation. The Conference Committee worked tirelessly to ensure that everyone was made to feel welcome and part of the St. Athanasius family with every detail taken care of. The food was delicious and plentiful. The banquet entertainment was first-rate and the Saturday afternoon tour and workshops were a treat. Leading up to the Conference, there were more music rehearsals this year than ever before, ensuring that many were familiar with the music. We were fortunate to have Greg in the area who personally directed the majority of rehearsals with many in attendance. Greg was very familiar with the music and even made rehearsal CDs by part to help everyone better learn the music, arranged by our own Dean Limberakis of Boston, MA, which is truly beautiful but challenging. All these efforts paid off in the end. Finally, thank you to everyone who attended the Conference, over 100 voices in the combined Adult and Youth Choirs. You all united your hearts and your voices in praise of our Lord and should be very proud of what was accomplished.
