This Week s Big Idea: Incarnation: God Comes in Jesus

Transcription:

Grace Lutheran Church October 14, 2018 8:30 am Traditional Worship Twenty-First Sunday After Pentecost This week we continue a three-week stewardship emphasis, Loving Generously. Today we examine ways we help those less fortunate. Stewardship is not just a duty and responsibility it is a fortunate delight and privilege. God gives to us out of a heart filled with love and enables us to do the same. New to Grace? Please stop by our Welcome Center in the entryway. All are welcome to receive Holy Communion as we celebrate the presence of Jesus among us. As you prepare for worship, please fill out worship information sheets in the red folders in each pew. Parents or children are welcome to use our Wiggle Room behind the sanctuary. Congregation responses in Bold. *Those who are able, please stand. We Gather in celebration PRELUDE Prelude in A Minor J. S. Bach WELCOME/GREET ONE ANOTHER *CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS Lord, God, when we fail to realize that everything we have is a gift from you, Forgive us. When we lose sight that we are stewards, charged with using our gifts to share with others and care for creation, Forgive us. When we evade your influence in the way we acquire, regard, manage, and spend our resources, Forgive us. Though our efforts fall short, we pray your forgiveness through Jesus Christ; And your strength to use all our gifts in ways that benefit all creation. Amen.

*HYMN *GREETING Grace and peace from our God and Father, hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, and the consolation of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. *HYMN OF PRAISE 2

*PRAYER OF THE DAY Hear us as we pray together. Lord Jesus, through your life, death and resurrection you have restored us to a right and proper relationship with God, who gives us everything we have. Each day empower us to respond in faith, revealing our love for you in all we do. In your name we pray, Amen. We hear God's word READING Philippians 2:4-11 Listen to a reading from Paul s letter to the Philippians: 4Let each of you look not to your own interests, but to the interests of others. 5 Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, 7 but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, 8 he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (NRSV) Word of God. Word of Life. Thanks be to God MESSAGE FOR THE CHILD IN US ALL *VERSE 3

*GOOD NEWS Mark 10:17-31 Good News from Mark! Glory to you, O Lord. 17As he was setting out on a journey, a man ran up and knelt before him, and asked him, Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life? 18 Jesus said to him, Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. 19 You know the commandments: You shall not murder; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; You shall not defraud; Honor your father and mother. 20 He said to him, Teacher, I have kept all these since my youth. 21 Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said, You lack one thing; go, sell what you own, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me. 22 When he heard this, he was shocked and went away grieving, for he had many possessions. 23 Then Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, How hard it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God! 24 And the disciples were perplexed at these words. But Jesus said to them again, Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God. 26 They were greatly astounded and said to one another, Then who can be saved? 27 Jesus looked at them and said, For mortals it is impossible, but not for God; for God all things are possible. 28 Peter began to say to him, Look, we have left everything and followed you. 29 Jesus said, Truly I tell you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields, for my sake and for the sake of the good news, 30 who will not receive a hundredfold now in this age houses, brothers and sisters, mothers and children, and fields with persecutions and in the age to come eternal life. 31 But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first. (NRSV) The Good News of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. MESSAGE Kind and Called Pastor Dan Kahl *HYMN OF THE DAY God, Whose Giving Knows No Ending tune: Hymn to Joy God, whose giving knows no ending, from your rich and endless store: nature's wonder, Jesus' wisdom, costly cross, grave's shattered door, gifted by you, we turn to you, off'ring up ourselves in praise; thankful song shall rise forever, gracious donor of our days. Skills and time are ours for pressing toward the goals of Christ, your Son: all at peace in health and freedom, races joined, the church made one. Now direct our daily labor, lest we strive for self alone; born with talents, make us servants fit to answer at your throne. Treasure, too, you have entrusted, gain through pow'rs your grace conferred; ours to use for home and kindred, and to spread the gospel word. Open wide our hands in sharing, as we heed Christ's ageless call, healing, teaching, and reclaiming, serving you by loving all. Text: Robert L. Edwards, 1915-2006 Text 1961, ren. 1989 The Hymn Society, admin. Hope Publishing Company, Carol Stream, IL 60188. 4

We share God's love *APOSTLES' CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. *PRAYERS God hears the cry of the poor and is near to all in need. Let us pray for our neighbors, our world, and ourselves, trusting in God's mercy and love. A brief silence. Your Word, O God, gives life to the world. Give patience and understanding to all who wrestle with your word in the church, that your gospel of love and compassion might always be guiding us. Hear us, O God. Your Word, O God, brought forth creation. Bless all who dedicate their lives to the care and healing of what you have made, and help us all be good stewards of your gift of life. Hear us, O God. Your Word, O God, gives wisdom and insight. We pray for all who make decisions on behalf of your people, especially for judges, juries, and courts, that they would exercise their authority with justice. Hear us, O God. Your Word, O God, transforms the world. We pray for our congregation's ministries of evangelism, that you would use our hands and feet and voices to embody your love for this community. Hear us, O God. Your Word, O God, is our hope and safety. Watch over our going out and coming in, that we and all who have hoped in your salvation might find our rest in you. Hear us, O God. Your Word, O God, is good news to the poor. Bring joy to all who suffer any kind of need (especially), that they might be rich in the love and support of your people. Hear us, O God. All this we ask, gracious God, together with all that is known to you alone, in the name of your risen and anointed Son, through the power of your life-giving Spirit. Amen. 5
