The Step of Consecration Joshua 3; Exodus 19 What do you do if you re trying to be as close to Jesus as you possibly can be but you don t really know your next step? EX: Our Tuesday prayer group is praying, and just finished a fast, to seek the Father for our next steps. I think we as Believers get all anxious about what God wants us to do next. However, we may not be taking the basic steps required to move forward with Christ. What am I referring to here? I want to introduce to you the concept of Consecration! Here s the point for today: If you want to take the next step in your relationship with Christ, and see Him work in you in a new way, learn to consecrate yourself everyday! Why? Joshua 3:1-5 3 Early in the morning Joshua and all the Israelites set out from Shittim and went to the Jordan, where they camped before crossing over. 2 After three days the officers went throughout the camp, 3 giving orders to the people: When you see the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God, and the priests, who are Levites, carrying it, you are to move out from your positions and follow it. 4 Then you will know which way to go, since you have never been this way before. But keep a distance of about a thousand yards between you and the ark; do not go near it. 5 Joshua told the people, Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do amazing things among you. God has brought the people of Israel out of slavery. They have wandered in the wilderness for 40 years because they were not allowed to go into the Promised Land. Then, after Moses died, God calls on Joshua to lead the people into the land they had been promised.

HUGE: After all this time, it was time for God s people to receive the promise that He had made them. And, what does He tell them to do? Joshua 3:5 5 Joshua told the people, Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do amazing things among you. Exodus 19:7-9 7 So Moses went back and summoned the elders of the people and set before them all the words the Lord had commanded him to speak. 8 The people all responded together, We will do everything the Lord has said. So Moses brought their answer back to the Lord. 9 The Lord said to Moses, I am going to come to you in a dense cloud, so that the people will hear me speaking with you and will always put their trust in you. Then Moses told the Lord what the people had said. God asks Moses are these people serious about following me? Moses says, yes, the people have said they will do everything You say. God says, I m going to come visit with you in a way that they people can see it. - And look what God has them do: Exodus 19:10-11 10 And the Lord said to Moses, Go to the people and consecrate them today and tomorrow. Have them wash their clothes 11 and be ready by the third day, because on that day the Lord will come down on Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people. It both situations God has them consecrate themselves before He does what He said He would do. But what did He do once they had consecrated themselves: Joshua 3:15-16 15 Now the Jordan is at flood stage all during harvest. Yet as soon as the priests who carried the ark reached the Jordan and their feet touched the

water s edge, 16 the water from upstream stopped flowing. It piled up in a heap a great distance away In Exodus, He showed up, just like He said He would! Crossing the Jordan is also a picture of what is happening in your life when you are stepping out in faith to receive all the promises of God. - What is your Personal Jordan?? Listen: This is the kind of stuff I m talking about. We want to see God move in these types of amazing ways. - We want to see the glory of God fall in our lives, our church, and all over our city. I believe He s calling us to be consecrated before Him in order to see all that He has planned for us. So, what does it really mean? Consecration: - To make holy; separate out for, or dedicate to, a higher purpose. First step of consecration for us is to recognize that we are set apart for a higher purpose. God is the One Who makes us holy. He sets us apart and dedicates us to His higher purpose for ourselves. - Confessing and dealing with our sin so that we can be in perfect connection with our Heavenly Father. LISTEN: You cannot be perfectly connected with God if you re not willing to deal with the sin in your life. TRUTH: If you want to see God split the waters for your trip to the promised land, you can t be just like everyone else in this world. - It is impossible to be set apart and blend in at the same time. - Healing the connection so that God s power can flow into and through our lives. Forgive where you need to forgive.

Accept grace where you ve struggled to accept it in the past. Find anything that may hinder your connection to the Father and remove it immediately. - Do your part and then allow the Father to heal your connection with Him. But, it s more intentional on a daily basis than most of us make it: - "It is the fresh act of dedicating yourself or your home, a relationship, a job, your sexuality, whatever needs God s grace deliberately and intentionally to Jesus, bringing it fully into his kingdom and under his rule." Moving Mountains John Eldredge My definition: Consecrating myself is getting up everyday and lining myself up under the plan and the blessing of God so that He can use me and bless me however He desires. CHALLENGE: This is not always fun but your willingness to make this happens is determined by how badly you desire the movement of God in your life! Abram in Genesis 12 combined with Acts 7:2-4 According to Acts 7, God appeared to Abram in Ur of the Chaldeans and called him to pack up and move to Canaan, the Promised Land. However, Abram and his family actually settled in Haran for a short time. Genesis 11:31 31 Terah took his son Abram, his grandson Lot son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, the wife of his son Abram, and together they set out from Ur of the Chaldeans to go to Canaan. But when they came to Haran, they settled there. After his Father died Abram made his move on to Canaan. Terah: delay Haran: barren land When God calls you to something great, your delay in obedience will only leave you in a barren land.

Matthew Henry says: If God loves us, and has mercy on us, He will not allow us to stop anywhere short of Canaan and will graciously repeat His call until we completely obey. Question: Are you willing to consecrate yourself and your household every day to see all that God has to offer you or are you going to delay your obedience and spend more time in the barren land? It is time to step in the river!
