November Program Preview/Preparation Since the society will be commemorating the Battle of Liberty on its 150 th anniversary in November 2014, it was decided to commemorate the Battle of Franklin (November 30, 1864) in its 149 th anniversary month with a program on the battle but with emphasis on those portions and locations where many of the Mississippians from southwest Mississippi were involved. Hood s army was forced to deal with a sizeable federal force sent to resist the march on Nashville. The federal forces managed to escape in the dark and retired to Franklin where they reinforced the for occupying the federal earthworks. When he learned of the federal escape early on November 30, Hood ordered his army to to Franklin in hopes of catching the federals before they could reach safety. The first of Hood s infantry did not reach Winstead Hill south of Franklin until 1:00 pm but sufficient forces (in Hood s judgment) had arrived by 4:00 pm when he ordered the assault of the federal line to begin.
