We welcome you to this service of worship! Please write your name on the welcome pad at the end of your pew, and then return it to learn who is sitting near you. Please include your address if you are a visitor or new attender. A nursery for children up to 5 years of age is available in Room 204. For those with hearing difficulties, assistive listening equipment (which includes headphones and a small, pocket-sized receiver) is available. Please ask one of the ushers for assistance. Greeters this morning are Ellsworth Kauffman and Bryce Schmidt. Nursery workers during worship are Joel and Ruth Tieszen.

Among our friends Our thoughts for healing and swift recovery go to Carolyn Beck, who broke her right arm (while waiting for surgery on her shoulder). She will have reconstructive surgery to repair both her arm and shoulder on Friday, August 11, at the Spine Hospital. In our community, our city, and beyond Next Sunday, Kathy Wiens will be speaking on the Safe Sanctuary program. Child care will be provided. Safe Sanctuaries training helps congregations understand the prevalence of childhood sexual abuse and why the church is at risk. Information is provided on ways to protect children as well as how to develop a safety policy. Kathy leads many such workshops in the area and is passionate about keeping our churches safe for both children and adults. She has graduate degrees in education and counseling. Wednesday night suppers are returning, beginning September 6 and running through October 25! The season is 8 weeks instead of the usual 12 weeks, so don t delay! Get your house church together to plan, prepare and serve a meal your family, your friends. We look forward to eating together and, if you have been the chef, you KNOW how much fun cooking together can be! There is a signup sheet on the table outside the office window. Looking forward to dining with you in the fall. Please mark your calendars to attend the council/congregational retreat on Sunday, August 27th, during Sunday School and continuing after a potluck lunch, ending around 1:30 pm! We will open the retreat with a brief business session to discuss a proposal to add a.5fte youth minister position and continue with guided visioning using an adaptation of the Future Church Summit from MCUSA Convention. Please bring a dish to share and your own table service. Childcare will be provided. Don t forget LAMC s Deacons Member Assistance Fund! Money from this fund is used to help one another in the congregation when there are unexpected medical (or other) expenses. Typically, the pastors and deacons double the money in this fund when they write matching grants to Everence. Thank you for your generosity! The annual MCC Flatlander Bike Ride is Saturday, September 16, starting at the Mennonite Central Committee offices, 121 E. 30 th, North Newton. This year s ride will raise funds for an MCC water

development project in India. Rides of about 35, 45, and 65 miles, as well as a shorter family ride, are planned. Brochures are on the table outside the church office; they re also available on the MCC website: mcc.org/get-involved/events/mcc-flatlander-bicycle-ride. Contributions for this MCC project from non-bikers should be made payable to MCC, Flatlander Bike Ride written on the memo line, and sent to: MCC, PO Box 235, North Newton KS 67117. Beyond Tolerance continues! Another opportunity to worship with the Greater Faith Christian Church is coming up on Sunday, August 20 at 10:00 a.m.! Sign-up sheet for 50 people is in the south lobby (on the sofa table ) since seating capacity at GFCC is limited. There will be worship at 9:30, as usual, here at Lorraine Avenue that morning. The way for us to learn to know one another is to learn to know one another! We will continue to worship together as well as eat and fellowship together, play and pray together. Let us reach beyond tolerance towards genuine friendship and camaraderie. The Jewish Summer Film Series, Wichita Art Museum, 1400 W. Museum Blvd., offers the following film free of charge, and open to the public: Deli Man, this afternoon, 2:00 p.m. Deli Man travels throughout America and beyond in pursuit of the great deli experience and the beloved food. The next concert will be Sunday, Aug. 13, 3 p.m., at Trinity Heights United Methodist Church in Newton, with one rehearsal, Sat., Aug. 12, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. If you are a Bethel choir alumnus who wants to be involved, contact Andrew Voth, votha@usd411.org, or check out the Bethel College Alumni Choir Facebook page for more information. Registration is now open for the Women & Girls Retreat (3rd grade and up) at Camp Mennoscah September 8-10. The theme is "Together: Rooted and Reaching" with Barb Krehbiel Gehring as our featured speaker. Retreat schedules and registration forms are available on the table outside the church office. 100 years of Mennonite Women organizations will be celebrated through stories

and a hymn sing Friday evening. There will be no separate girls programming this year, so girls should register for Saturday morning and afternoon activities and seminars. Hope to see you all at Camp Mennoscah! The Sunnyside Neighborhood Association Night Out & Ice Cream Social is Tuesday, August 8, 6-8 p.m., at the Grandparents Park on E. Kellogg Dr. The free ice cream is provided by Richard s Lil DQ. The Annual Camp Sing is Sunday, August 13 at 6:30 p.m. Everyone is invited to join us at Faith Mennonite Church in Newton for a rousing Camp Mennoscah celebration for another great summer of youth camps. We'll sing camp songs and hymns, have popcorn and generic pop (a Camp Mennoscah tradition), and time to talk and chat and share stories about our summer. It's going to be a blast! Donations will go towards upgrading the sound system at the dining hall. The Newton Et Cetera Shop is hiring a bilingual sorter/receiver for 20-30 hours/week. The sorter/clerk receives and sorts donations, focusing on clothing; assists Spanish-speaking customers and donors; and helps to translate written documents. The full job description and applications are available at the store Main or via e-mail at: generalmanager@newtonetceterashop.com Applications are due Monday, August 14, 2017, and can be submitted in person to the general manager or by e-mail. Searching for an exciting way to serve? MCC is urgently searching for a Canner Operator, with CDL truck driving experience, to travel with the mobile cannery before the season begins in October. Canner Operators travel to 30 different locations in the United States and Canada, canning meat, which is then sent around the world to hungry people. Come serve in this exciting way! Meet new people, and take advantage of experiences you ll never forget. For more information please contact John Hillegass at johnhillegass@mcc.org or (717) 859-1151. Prayer Request from Western District Conference: Pray that the worship, fellowship and discernment that took place at the WDC Annual Assembly this weekend in Arlington, TX, will continue to bear fruit in this 125th anniversary year, as we are rooted and built up in Christ.

Prayer Request from Mennonite Mission Network: Alisha and Josh Garber with 1-year-old Asher arrived at their new home in Spain two months ago. Pray for them as they adapt to a new language and culture as they serve alongside the leaders of the Barcelona Mennonite Church, focusing on youth outreach and congregational mission. Prayer request for Peacemakers: CPT Mediterranean: Urgent Action Request from Lesvos - Please share the information and join a 24-hour fast in solidarity with Behrooz Arash who is at risk of death. Behrooz Arash is dying. He sent a voice message to CPT members on Lesvos in which he said that his skin was falling off his body. We have been worried about his situation for a long time. The body gets damaged after the loss of 10% of the body weight. Behrooz has lost far more than that. He weighed 60 kilograms when he started his hunger strike 35 days ago. The last time he was checked, he weighed only 44 kilograms [97 lbs]. That happened last week. We expected the police to respond to the demands from the doctors, the lawyers and others to take both Behrooz Arash and Kozhin Hussein to hospital, however the police kept them in jail. We expected them to care about the survival of the hunger strikers, that they would value their lives, but we were wrong. Until this very moment, they are locked inside a cell and prevented by the police to receive medical care or vitamins. They are in this critical situation without any medical support.
