At the risk of aging myself, I will share this with you. As a kid, this time of year was always met with a little dread, some anticipation and a whole lot of anxiety. But, the routine of going back to school did offer some relief, even if I didn t like it, by providing something I already knew would happen amidst all of the unknowns. In my day, we didn t know who our teacher would be until the first day of school. Talk about creating anxiety for a kid! But, year after year, school would start the Tuesday after Labor Day. Like clockwork, we d watch the Jerry Lewis Telethon knowing that at the end of the weekend, we d be getting into our new school shoes, grabbing our new lunch box with the matching thermos which in those days was lined with glass so we were warned not to drop the lunch box by Mom and walking the familiar path to the school crossing guard. If you don t know what the Jerry Lewis Telethon is, please don t tell me in person, it will only make me feel old. Nowadays, kids find out who their teacher is during the summer and have the advantage of finding out which kids will be in their class. This is huge for mitigating anxiety. School shoes are a whole lot more attractive so that in itself makes going back to school a lot more pleasant. The school building still has that first day of school smell, and that too is comforting. But, even with those big anxieties removed, going back to school will always be filled with mixed emotions. Parents know it means getting back to juggling busy schedules, helping with homework ( those darn projects always seem to fall in the busiest time of year) and planning lunches ahead of time etc. So, how can we make this time of year a little less stressful, and remove some of the anxiety that inevitably creeps in around the 3 rd week of August? It s painfully simple I m afraid, but yet, because it s not on the school supply list, or one of the events we need to add to our carpool schedule, we don t always remember that we have it available to us. It is Prayer. As often as we need to, we can say a prayer for help, or courage, or patience. The simple act of sitting still for a moment and saying a prayer is a good place to start when life seems to be swirling around us out of our control. Prayer offers us solid ground. A foundation for calm thoughts to be built upon. And that comforting feeling of knowing that we re not alone in our struggles ever. Here are some helpful prayers from Catholic Household Blessings and Prayers: Prayer to Begin a School Year God of wisdom and might, we praise you for the wonder of our being, for mind, body and spirit. Be with our children as they begin a new school year. Bless them and their teachers and staff. Give the strength and grace as their bodies grow; wisdom and knowledge to their minds as they search for understanding; and peace and zeal to their hearts. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Prayer for Students Lord our God, in your wisdom and love you surround us with the mysteries of the universe. Send your spirit upon these students and fill them with your wisdom and blessings. Grant that they may devote themselves to their studies and draw ever closer to you, the source of all knowledge. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. Prayer for Teachers Lord God, your spirit of wisdom fills the earth and teaches us in your ways. Look upon these teachers. Let them strive to share their knowledge with gentle patience and endeavor always to bring the truth to eager minds. Grant that we may follow Jesus Christ, the way, the truth and the life, forever and ever. Amen. Peace and Blessings, Maryanne Are you new to St. Patrick Parish?
