Pastor Ryan McMillian December 13, 2015 HE CAME: To Seek and Save the Lost Luke 19:1-9 A LITTLE REVIEW: WEEK 1: JESUS, HE CAME, TO DESTROY THE DEVILS WORK... 1 John 3:8 NIV [8] The one who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil's work. WEEK 2: HE CAME NOT TO BE SERVED BUT TO SERVE... Mark 10:43-45 NIV [43] Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, [44] and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. [45] For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. SO, WHY AM I PREACHING THESE SERMONS THIS YEAR, AS OPPOSED TO THE TRADITIONAL WAY, YOU KNOW, BABY IN MANGER, THE STAR, GUYS CALLED MAGI, KING HERROD, AND
THE FLIGHT TO EGYPT? WELL, BECAUSE WE GET SO LOST IN THE CHRISTMAS STORY WE FORGET WHY HE CAME! HE CAME TO CHANGE THE WORLD, HE DIDN'T COME JUST TO PROVIDE A CHERISHED CHRISTMAS STORY, A CHERISHED FEELING ONCE A YEAR... HE CAME TO CHANGE THE COURSE OF HISTORY, HE CAME TO CHANGE THE ETERNAL OUTCOME OF ANYONE WHO WOULD LISTEN AND RECEIVE HIS MESSAGE. HE CAME TO DESTROY THE DEVIL'S WORK, SHOW US HOW TO SERVE AND THIS MORNING TO SAVE THE LOST! IF YOU HAVE A BIBLE... Why He Came 1. Jesus came to CALL us by name. Lk 19:5 Luke 19:1-10 NIV [1] Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. [2] A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. [3] He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was short he could not see over the crowd. [4] So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way. [5] When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today. [6] So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly. [7] All the people saw this and began to mutter, He has gone to be the guest of a sinner. [8] But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor,
and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount. [9] Jesus said to him, Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. [10] For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost. 2. Jesus came to FREE us from being lost. Lk 19:10 Galatians 5:1 NIV [1] It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. Are you tired of being held in bondage to your sin? So many people are held in bondage to sins, here are some examples: 1. Alcoholism 2. Drugs 3. Sexual Temptations 4. Greed 5. Worshipping Idols 6. Anger 7. Malice 8. Religious tradition Romans 8:14-17 NIV
[14] For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. [15] The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, Abba, Father. [16] The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children. [17] Now if we are children, then we are heirs---heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory. 3. Jesus came to GIVE us an eternal home. Jn. 14:2 John 14:1-4 NIV [1] Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God ; believe also in me. [2] My Father's house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? [3] And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. [4] You know the way to the place where I am going. What this means 1. Jesus is our LIGHT and COMPUS. Matthew 7:13-14 NIV [13] Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter
through it. [14] But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it. 2. We are Jesus LIGHT and COMPUS. Matthew 5:14-16 NIV [14] You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. [15] Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. [16] In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. Philippians 2:14-15 NIV [14] Do everything without grumbling or arguing, [15] so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation. Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky. How we respond 1. Do what He COMMANDS. Jn. 14:15 John 14:15 NIV [15] If you love me, keep my commands. 2. Allow the HOLY SPIRIT to lead you. Jn. 14:18 John 14:16-21 NIV
[16] And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever--- [17] the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. [18] I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. [19] Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. [20] On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. [21] Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.
