People Serving People In the Spirit of Christ. DUNLAP UNITED METHODIST CHURCH February, 2018 Early Worship : 8:30 am Sunday school : 9:30 am Worship: 10:30 am Youth 5:00 pm February 14 is not just Valentine s Day. This year it lands on Ash Wednesday and marks the beginning of the Lenten Season. The Season of Lent in the Christian calendar is set aside before the celebration of Easter. It is typically used as a time to examine our hearts and lives and turn from those things that keep us from being all that God created us to be. It has become a common practice to give up something during this season as a way of denying ourselves. Lent is not just about denying ourselves, but a time to seek restoration for our lives. It is a time to reflect, take stock of our spiritual condition, and realign our lives. This Lent, I will focus on the last day of Jesus life and how it presents to us the completion of God s saving work. Sermons during Lent will be based on Adam Hamilton s book 24 Hours That Changed the World. You are invited as a Sunday School class, small group or individual to read this and the 40-day companion devotion throughout this season. (You may order the book and devotion by calling Margaret in the church office.) Our goal together is to see our place in God s story of salvation. Together we will look at the events that last day, see more clearly the significance of Christ s suffering and death, and what that means in our lives today. PAGE 8 DUNLAP UNITED METHODIST CHURCH This month we give special recognition to Jeannetta Walker. Jeannetta was born and raised in Dayton, Ohio, and worked in data processing where she met Bruce. They married in 1981. While working, Jeannetta began night classes in the Culinary Arts program of her local Community College. Upon finishing, she retired from data processing and, with Bruce, started Savory and Sweet Catering. She did the cooking; Bruce helped with delivery and set up. She also began serving as the Administrative Assistant at the Fairborn Senior Center, where she stayed for 10 years, helping with accounting, payroll and, of course, cooking for special events. In 2013, she retired from the Center and she and Bruce began building their house on Fredonia Mountain. They chose to come to Dunlap because of its beautiful scenery and its proximity to Spring City, where her brother and his family live. Along with cooking, Jeannetta enjoys crocheting, knitting, sewing counted cross-stitch, and being a steward to her church and her community. We all love Jeannetta s cooking, and we deeply appreciate her and Bruce for their generous giving of time and amazing talents to Dunlap United Methodist Church!
February, 2018 Page 9 The Tennessee Department of Health has instituted a statewide health initiative called the Healthier TN Movement to promote healthy eating, exercise and tobacco abstinence/cessation. Churches throughout the state are being asked to participate as congregations, and our local initiative is called Step Up Sequatchie Healthier TN Movement. Our local Community Outreach Coordinator, Sherry Cagle, is looking for a member of Dunlap United Methodist Church who would be interested in recruiting membership in the initiative, and attending meetings to gain program perspective and to give congregational progress updates. If you are interested or curious about this, please go to http://healthiertn.com to view more details. You can also call Anita Eichler at 423-949-2611 or email her at adodd2@utk.edu. or call Margaret at the church office (949-2724). The first meeting is Thursday, March 1. Service is at 6:00 p.m. February 14 The Sequatchie County Fellowship of Churches have asked Dunlap United Methodist Church to make the second Sunday of each month, Food Bank Sunday. On that Sunday, members of the church are asked to bring one of the following items for the Food Bank: A bag of rice A bag of dried beans A jar of peanut butter A box of cereal The size or type of the article is up to the giver. Other churches in the county are designating a Sunday of each month as well for their members to give. We ve always been a big contributor to our Food Bank. Let s get behind this effort and fill those shelves with these always- in-demand
Page 10 DUNLAP UNITED METHODIST CHURCH The Dunlap UMW met Tuesday, January 9, 2018. Pat Treadwell reviewed how the funds donated and collected by the UMW are utilized locally and in the district. The group s annual UMW Retreat will be held at Brainerd UMC on February 24. Lunch will be provided. A motion was made and seconded to change the group s meeting date from the first Tuesday of each month to the 3rd Monday of each month. The motion passed. The next meeting will be Monday, February 19, 2018 at DUMC. The UMM met January 28th to review their very successful 2017 three scholarships given, three lunches held for the church, funnel cakes on the 4th and general maintenance. They expect 2018 to be just as busy, with work days and plans to meet with other churches in the area. Their next meeting will be on February 25, 2018 at 8:30 a.m. at the Dunlap United Methodist Church. If you would like more information about UMM, please contact Kenny Nix at 949-4715. Betsy Hatfield and Betty Morgan held the jail ministry Thursday, January 25th. Their program was about 2018 resolutions for self, family, country and the world. Betty lead the group in God Bless America. We need more volunteers for the Jail Ministry. Please see Betsy Hatfield if you can help.
