St. Peter Parish Cambridge, MA From the Director of Faith Formation This summer, I went on a weeklong retreat. A silent retreat. There was no talking, except during daily sessions with a director. Everyone at the retreat house dined together, sharing tables. Still, no conversation; just the sounds of eating. If you know me, you d think that this would be hard for me to endure. It wasn t. It was a relief. There was no obligation to socialize, learn people s names, chat about where we were all from, what we did for work, and, most happily, our opinions on current events. If you know me, you d think that it would be hard for me to retreat from current news, news as it was happening. You d be right! But the freedom to disengage from interaction and breaking news was a gift, which gave me the time and space to think about more important things, eternal things. I thought of the line from Psalm 46: Be still and know that I am God. To be still, in that sense, does not mean to be silent, but to stop frantic activity, to be motionless, or to stop fighting or conflict. To know God means to acknowledge, be aware. This time of stillness and contemplation gave me a much-needed new perspective on being grateful for the abundance of good in my life, the good that comes only from God and not from my own efforts or luck. This community is one of those goods. My hope this coming year is to be still and know you. Learn About: The Book of Exodus and The Journey Home Six Sundays Beginning September 9 10:15 11:15 a.m., Parish Center Join us to study and discuss The Book of Exodus, the second of the five books known as the Pentateuch in the Bible. Exodus tells us the story of the Israelites travails and tribulations in trying to leave Egypt and return to their homeland. It is full of events that are as topical today as they were thousands of years ago. Studying this divine story of the journey home will give us insight into the universal characteristics of human psyche and soul as well provide us clues into our own inner journey. No prior knowledge of the Pentateuch is necessary. All materials will be provided. You are welcome to bring your own Bible, along with your curious mind. Please e-mail Olga.Turcotte@yahoo.com or call the Parish Office to participate. The group is limited to 20.
