PERSEVERING IN GOD S WORD Willie Alvarenga

PERSEVERING IN GOD S WORD Willie Alvarenga PROPOSITION: Every Christian must remain faithful to the Word of God. OBJECTIVE: To encourage Christians to remain faithful to God s Word, even when others choose not to. INTRODUCTION: 1. We are living in difficult times 2. Satan has been trying to destroy the church of Christ for many years 3. This enemy has attacked the Word of God from the beginning (Genesis 3:1-5). 4. Many unfaithful Christians are doing the will of Satan by practicing those things that go contrary to the Word of God 5. Examples of those who are not remaining faithful to the Word of God: a. Many are uplifting the false teaching of the New Hermeneutics b. Many are assaulting the worship of the New Testament: Instruments, women leading in worship, concerts, false teachers preaching, etc. c. Many are perverting the plan of salvation d. Many are perverting the organization of the church 6. Brethren, all of these things are leading the church that Jesus purchased with His own blood (Acts 20:28) in the path of destruction (2 Peter 3:16-17). 7. We must realize that each day that passes by; we are getting closer to death. 8. Therefore, today, more than ever, we must remain faithful to the Word of God. 9. In this lesson, we will briefly consider three main points: a. The command to remain faithful to God s Word b. The consequences of not abiding in God s Word c. The How of remaining faithful to the Word of God 10. As we consider this lesson, I want you to please purpose in your heart heading to what God says (Luke 8:18; 9:44; James 1:22). - 2 -

I. THE COMMAND TO REMAIN FAITHFUL TO GOD S WORD. A. God, from the beginning of time, has requested that we remain faithful to His Word. a. Adam & Eve (Genesis 2:16-17) b. Noah (Genesis 6:1-22, 22) c. God wanted parents to teach their children the Word of God (Deuteronomy 6:5-7) B. Prophets were exhorted to remain faithful to the Word of God: a. Joshua 24:15 implies faithfulness to the Word of God b. Micaiah the son of Imlah (1 Kings 22:1-14, 14) c. Jeremiah 26:2 Preach the whole counsel of God d. Jeremiah 23:28 Let him who has my Word, preach my Word faithfully e. Ezekiel 2:7-8 You will speak to them my Word, whether they listen or not C. Evangelist were commanded to remain faithful to the Word of God: a. Paul (1 Corinthians 2:2; 4:5; Acts 20:27). Paul led by example! b. Paul exhorted Timothy (2 Timothy 1:13; 2 Timothy 4:1-8) c. Paul exhorted Titus (Titus 2:1, 7-8) In doctrine Titus was to show integrity, reverence, and incorruptibility. D. All of these points show clearly that God commands us to remain faithful to His Word. E. Are we faithful to His Word or are we doing what we want, instead of what the Lord wants? II. THE CONSEQUENCES OF NOT ABIDING IN GOD S WORD. A. Do we have information in the Bible which tells us about the serious consequences of not abiding in God s Word? The answer is: ABSOLUTELY! B. Notice the serious consequences which will come your way if you are not faithful to the Word of God; to sound doctrine: a. We will not be able to have fellowship with God and His son (1 John 1:6-7; 2 John 9-11). - 3 -

b. We will not be able to show God that we love Him (John 14:15) c. Punishment will come to those who disobey God s Word (Leviticus 10:1-2). d. Divine destruction will come upon you (2 Peter 3:16-17). e. Churches will be divided because of false teaching (1 Corinthians 1:10-13). f. We will worship God in vain (Matthew 15:7-9). g. Our children will depart from the way of salvation (Judges 2:10-11, 13; 3:6, 7, 12; 4:1; 6:1) h. Heaven will not be our home (Matthew 7:21; Revelation 22:14). i. You will be disciplined (Titus 3: C. Brethren, as we can see, there are serious consequences when we abide not in the teachings of God. D. The blessings of remaining faithful to the Word of God will be the opposite of what we have discussed under this point. E. May God help us to be faithful to His Word! III. THE HOW OF REMAINING FAITHFUL TO GOD S WORD. A. I would like to bring this lesson to an end by pointing out some of those things that you and I can do in order to remain faithful to the Word of God. B. Please consider the following: a. Be conformed to HOW God wants us to do things. Many things that God requests of us may not make sense, but we still have to do it. b. Respect the authority of the Scriptures (Colossians 3:17; 1 Peter 4:11) c. Grow in the knowledge of God s Word (2 Peter 3:18; 2 Timothy 2:15; Psalm 119:11) d. Elders: encourage preachers to preach sound doctrine (Titus 2:1; 2 Timothy 1:13; 1 Peter 4:11) e. Elders and preachers: Be very careful that false teachers do not get a chance to promote their false teaching (Acts 20:28-31). - 4 -

f. We need to cultivate a deep conviction for the Word of God (2 Timothy 3:16-17; 2 Peter 1:20-21). g. We must remember the serious and terrible consequences of not being faithful to the Word of God. Please remember our second point. h. We must remember that Christ may come at any moment. This being the case, we must remain faithful at all times (Matthew 24:36, 44; 1 Thessalonians 5:1-2). C. I strongly believe that by doing these things, we will be able to remain faithful to the Word of God. CONCLUSION: 1. If we want to spend eternity in Heaven, let us continue to remain faithful to the Word of God. 2. Therefore, let us remember: a. The command to be faithful to the Word of God b. The terrible consequences of not being faithful to the Word of God c. The How of remaining faithful to the Word of God. 3. May God help us to this end! - 5 -
