THE SERVICE FOR THE LORD S DAY Transfiguration Sunday February 26, 2017 Prelude GATHERING OF GOD S PEOPLE 11:00 A.M. Welcome and Announcements (During this time the friendship pads are passed to be signed.) Minute for Mission Today s Opening Sentences for Transfiguration Sunday are adapted from Travelling in Glory by Roddy Hamilton. Perhaps wonder also lies at the heart of biblical faith. William P. Brown, Sacred Sense Choral Call to Worship Clara Scott, 1895 Open My Eyes That I May See Open my eyes, that I may see glimpses of truth thou hast for me. Place in my hands the wonderful key that shall unclasp and set me free. Silently now I wait for thee, ready, my God, thy will to see. Open my eyes; illumine me, Spirit divine! Opening Sentences Elder Curt Simpson Leader: From seashore to mountain top, from lonely place to hillside, from touching lepers to touching glory, this has been the reign of God. All: From baptism s water to mountaintop glory, from calling disciples to the healing of many, from synagogue exorcism to transfiguration, we have moved in the glory of God. Leader: The revealing, the making known, the unfolding, the manifesting, the unveiling, the unmasking, of Jesus. All: From the Jordan to the present, from the beginning to here, from Galilee to this place, let us gather in the wonder, love, and praise of God. *Hymn #192 "Lord, the Light of Your Love Is Shining" (Shine, Jesus, Shine)

\ *Unison Prayer of Confession God of glory and light, forgive us when we are complacent and comfortable with keeping the riches of your love to ourselves. Keep calling us down from our mountains of privilege. Keep expecting more of us as your disciples. Keep reminding us to listen to your Son, in whose name we offer this spoken confession and our silent prayers... (A time for silent prayers of confession...) In celebrating Jesus Transfiguration, we rejoice in the divine majesty of Christ, whose glory shone even when confronted with the cross. It is given us for our journey through Lent toward the agony of the cross and the victory of the empty tomb. We celebrate this mystery in order that our faith may be renewed. We are transformed into the new being in Christ as we join Christ in his death and resurrection in Lent and Easter. Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) Mission Agency Responsive Assurance of Pardon Leader: On mountaintops and in valleys, in our homes and in our hearts, God knows us better than we know ourselves, and God forgives us when we cannot forgive ourselves. All: By God s mercy in Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. By God s mercy in Jesus Christ, we are made whole. By God s mercy in Jesus Christ, we are equipped to serve others. Thanks be to God! *Gloria Patri Glory Be to the Father Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, amen. PROCLAIMING GOD S WORD FEED OUR HUNGRY CHILDREN/BACKPACK MINISTRY OFFERING Children s Sermon Anthem Lord of the Dance" arr. Mark Hayes Zachary Casteen I danced in the morning when the world was begun, And I danced in the moon and the stars and the sun, And I came down from heaven and I danced on the earth; at Bethlehem I had My birth. Dance then, wherever you may be; I am the Lord of the Dance, said He, And I ll lead you all, wherever you may be, and I ll lead you all in the dance, said He. I danced for the scribe and the Pharisee, But they would not dance and they would not follow Me; I danced for the fishermen, for James and John; they came with Me and the dance went on. I danced on the Sabbath and I cured the lame; the holy people said it was a shame. They whipped and they stripped and they hung Me high, and left Me there on a cross to die. I danced on a Friday when the sky turned black; it s hard to dance with the devil on your back. They buried My body and they thought I d gone; but I am the dance and I still go on. They cut me down and I leap up high; I am the life that will never, never die; I ll live in you if you ll live in Me: I am the Lord of the Dance, said He.

:16 To put it simply: the Holy Spirit bothers us. Because he moves us, he makes us walk, he pushes the Church to go forward. And we are like Peter at the Transfiguration: 'Ah, how wonderful it is to be here like this, all together!'... But don't bother us. We want the Holy Spirit to doze off... we want to domesticate the Holy Spirit. And that's no good. because he is God, he is that wind which comes and goes and you don't know where. He is the power of God, he is the one who gives us consolation and strength to move forward. But: to move forward! And this bothers us. It's so much nicer to be comfortable. Pope Francis Prayer for Illumination Great God of dazzling beauty and overshadowing majesty, in Jesus Christ, your Beloved Son the Chosen One, we glimpse the image of your glory. Teach us to listen to him. As we hear your Word read and proclaimed, may we hear your voice and follow your holy way; through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen. Amen. *The Affirmation of Faith: The Apostles Creed I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. *Hymn #156 Sing of God Made Manifest SALZBURG

May God shine the light of glory into your hearts. May Christ be with you and never leave you. May the Spirit renew the image of God within you. Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. Our Ministry & Mission catalog describes twenty-three ministry programs and opportunities to serve in our church. Have you ever wondered Why? Why do we do we have all of these ministries? Join your fellow Christians for a conversation about What Is Our Why? on Sunday, March 5, following worship. Dr. Phil will lead us in discussion about what is most central in our life as a congregation and how our why is the basis for how and what we do in our ministry and mission. Please join us immediately after church in the Currie building for a covered dish luncheon sponsored by the Wallace Presbyterian Women.

The session will have a called meeting today at 2:00 p.m. at the Rosemary Rest Home in Rose Hill for the purpose of receiving Bruce and Barbara Lyon as members by transfer from the North Raleigh Presbyterian Church, Raleigh, NC. Please join the minister for a Bible study on Acts 2:14-36 on Wednesday, March 1 (Ash Wednesday) from 10:00-11:00 a.m. (Church Office Building) or from 7:15-8:15 p.m. (Room 304). Wednesday, March 1, Ash Wednesday begins the season of Lent. Acknowledging that all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, we stand in solidarity as fellow creatures before our Creator, acutely aware of our mortality. In the face of our transience, we pledge ourselves anew to live unto God s Word in Jesus Christ, the eternal Word that remains forever. Historically, Ash Wednesday was a time when penitents were presented for church discipline during Lent, culminating in reconciliation on Maundy Thursday. Ash Wednesday is also the occasion when would-be disciples of Christ known as catechumens were enrolled in the catechumenate, a special time of learning the basics of the faith in preparation for baptism on Easter Sunday or during the Easter Vigil. In some traditions, Ash Wednesday is a fast day, beginning the Lenten time of fasting and preparation for the Great Three Days that culminate in Easter.
