Today we celebrate the Feast of Pentecost, when Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to dwell within us and to guide us. At our Confirmation, we received that same Spirit and all the gifts the Spirit offers. They go by a few different names but an easy way for me to remember them is WURK CRW: Wisdom, Understanding, Right Judgment, Knowledge, Courage, Reverence, Wonder and Awe. Each of these gifts have the power to enlighten and empower us in our everyday lives. All we need to do is ask the Spirit of God to provide them and then, like any other gift, open them up and make use of them. These gifts are not for selfish use but are to be used at the service of others. I leave you with a few simple questions to ask yourself: Have I asked the Holy Spirit to give me these gifts when I need them? Which gift has been most prevalent in my life this past year? Which gift will help me face my current circumstances with confidence, peace, and joy? Which gift have I neglected to open and use? How can I put these gifts to the service of others? May God give you Peace, James Whitaker Youth Minister RENEWAL is published weekly by the Franciscan Renewal Center, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization 5802 E. Lincoln Dr., Scottsdale, AZ 85253. LITURGY CONNECTION The Fruits of the Holy Spirit We can see the effect of the Holy Spirit s presence in our lives in certain qualities and attitudes the fruits of the Holy Spirit. Love: unselfish devotion and care for God and our neighbor. Joy: recognizing that true happiness comes, not from money or possessions, but from knowing and following the Lord. Peace: freeing ourselves from worrying about trivial things and working and praying for peace throughout the world. Patience: treating others with thoughtfulness. Kindness/Goodness: treating others as we want to be treated, and doing what we know is right. Generosity: when we share our gifts and possessions with others. Gentleness: acting calmly and avoiding actions that might lead others to anger or resentment. Faithfulness: when we live out our commitment to the teachings of Jesus. Self-control: working to overcome the temptations we face and by trying always to do God s will. Father s Day in two weeks... June 18 We will remember and pray for our Fathers who have given us life and love for those who are with us as well as those who have left our sight. And we give thanks... for as a loving father generously provides for his children, so does God watch over us. To help us recognize and honor our fathers that day, all are invited to bring photographs to Mass photos of their fathers and grandfathers, Godfathers, stepfathers living or deceased. There will be tables in the church to display them. May we honor them always with a spirit of profound respect. Celebrate Pentecost today Pentecost is probably one of the most important days on the Church calendar, but it often gets overlooked. Here are some ideas of how to celebrate. Because Pentecost is the birthday of the Church, celebrate it just as you would any other birthday in your home break out the cake and ice cream! Wear something red. The color symbolizes the love of the Holy Spirit, or the tongues of fire that appeared over the heads of the apostles on Pentecost. And don t just stop at wearing red. Use a red tablecloth for dinner, eat off red paper plates, eat red foods, etc. See how many ways you can incorporate the color red in your celebration. Make a fruit salad, and talk about the fruits of the Holy Spirit. It s a joyful day let the Holy Spirit move you to be creative and loving. Fraternal Care Trust collection today The Franciscan friars of the Province of St. Barbara are a fraternity of 185 men. Of these, more than 70 friars are over the age of 70. Although most of these friars still continue to work, some need professional residential care and reside at various assisted living facilities. Your support of this fund helps with the care for the special men in their advanced years. Envelopes for this will be on the seats when you arrive for Mass. There will be only one collection during Mass, so please drop both envelopes (your weekly Casa gift & special collection gift) in the collection basket. If you are unprepared to participate, but would like to, you can always bring the envelope bring next week. Thank you for helping care for these devoted servants of the Lord. While we are caring for our elderly friars, let s also pray for those who might be discerning a call to the priesthood or religious life. May the Lord send workers into the field! FAMILY CATECHESIS & SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION Becoming a Domestic Church 5 Ways to Make It Happen! Love is shown by little things, by attention to small daily signs which make us feel at home. Faith grows when it is lived and shaped by love. That is why our families, our homes, are true domestic churches. They are the right place for faith to become life, and life to grow in faith. Pope Francis Did you know that your home is a holy place? Even with the dishes piling up, the clothes needing to be washed, the dog running underfoot, your home is a true domestic church. Forget all the clutter and focus on the love, the forgiveness, the sacrifices and the faith instead. Easier said than done? Here are 5 ways to help you along: Chow down together eating together is the perfect time to find out what is happening with your spouse and children. You also can say grace over your meal. Manage the media put the parental controls on the computers, monitor social media apps and most importantly, talk about a why this is necessary. Make your kids work having your children participate in chores not only makes them more responsible but shows that they are a vital component to the family. Pray together so try a Rosary together. Having trouble getting through a whole one? How about a decade, or a Hail Mary? Most importantly just pray! Parents first children can be so demanding that we forget about ourselves as a couple. Utilize date nights or coffee breaks. A strong marriage makes for a strong family. (paraphrased from the Archdiocese of Denver Family Life Office) Page 4 RENEWAL thecasa.org Family Faith Activities June 4 Feast of Pentecost Pentecost is sometimes called the birthday of the Church. On this day, the Holy Spirit descended upon the disciples showering them with gifts Wisdom, Understanding, Knowledge, Right Judgment, Courage, Reverence, Wonder and Awe. Remember these using the acronym WURKCRW. How often do we call upon the Holy Spirit and ask for these gifts? Honestly, I find myself forgetting about them very easily until Confirmation and Pentecost rolls around. Then I once again say to myself, How could I forget?" These gifts are given to us to live out our calling as disciples, using them for the good and service of all. Our young children recently confirmed will enter adolescence a turbulent time for many, carrying these gifts. These gifts will not be any good to us unless they are opened and set free. So, my Pentecost resolution will be to call upon the Holy Spirit throughout the year, opening these gifts and serving those around me. How about you? What transformations can happen in your family and life when these gifts are opened? Join me in finding out. Gather your family and talk about your family s strongest gifts. Read 1 Corinthians 12: 3-7, 12-13and discuss: What is given to each person? How should these gifts be used? How is the Church like one body? One Body: Sketch a simple figure of a body and call it by your family name. Label the parts such as ears, eyes, hands, feet, etc., and consider which members are those parts of the whole body. Who is a good listener? Whose eyes are good at finding lost objects? Who helps with chores or walks the dog? More than one person can claim a part. When you are done, marvel at how many gifts you have together as a family. Concluding Prayer: Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Your faithful, and kindle in them the fire of Your love. Spiritual Direction Exploring a Relationship with God In the midst of a busy life, many people find it difficult to notice God s action in their daily affairs. Yet, at the deepest level, many of us long for a more conscious experience of God s presence and love. A spiritual director/companion is trained to listen and encourage you to explore a closer relationship with God through conversation, listening and prayer. If you are curious about spiritual direction at the Casa, or would like to make an appointment, please contact Sharon Taszarek at 480.948.7460, ext. 162 or sharon@thecasa.org.
