The Word of God by Ellis P. Forsman October 15, 2011 The Word of God 2

The Word of God Hebrews 4:12 One of the greatest powers in the world is often overlooked. When thinking of great powers in this world, man thinks of bombs, heavy machinery, or storms. The Bible says God s word is powerful. Heb. 4:12, For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. In this lesson we will cover six reasons why the word of God is powerful. The word of God is alive Too many people consider the Bible is dead literature or history. The word of God proves itself to be alive. John 1:1-3, In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. John 1:14-17, And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me. And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace. For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. Even the elements obeyed Him. Rom. 6:11, Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. The word of God moves hearts to change; motivates lives to service; and deals with man s most difficult problem sin. Therefore, God s word is alive because it changes our lives. The Word of God 3

The word of God is active The word of God is compared to seed. Luke 8:4-15, And when much people were gathered together, and were come to him out of every city, he spake by a parable: A sower went out to sow his seed: and as he sowed, some fell by the way side; and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it. And some fell upon a rock; and as soon as it was sprung up, it withered away, because it lacked moisture. And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprang up with it, and choked it. And other fell on good ground, and sprang up, and bare fruit an hundredfold. And when he had said these things, he cried, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. And his disciples asked him, saying, What might this parable be? And he said, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to others in parables; that seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand. Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved. They on the rock are they, which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away. And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection. But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience. The seed does no good unless it is planted in the heart where it can grow. John 6:63, It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. The word of God is sharp The word of God is compared to a sharp sword. Heb. 4:12, For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Its sharpness makes it accurate. In woodworking, one can make mistakes when using a dull cutting tool. Work is much easier when using a sharp tool. The Word of God 4

Our life can work much easier when shaped by the sharp word of God. To keep our lives perfect we must continue to use God s sharp tool to smooth our rough edges. 2 Tim. 2:15, Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. The word of God meets all of our needs. 2 Tim. 3:16-17, All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works. 2 Pet. 1:3, According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: The word of God pierces A dull sword would not fulfill its purposes. It would not be able to penetrate. The word of God can pierce to the point of dividing the soul and the spirit. Heb. 4:12, For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Separates truth from falsehood. Nothing can be hidden. 2 Cor. 4:1-2, Therefore seeing we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we faint not; But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man s conscience in the sight of God. 1 John 3:20-22, For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things. Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God. And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight. The Word of God 5

The word goes where no man can go or think. 1 Cor. 1:25, Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men. The word of God discerns Heb. 4:12, For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. The word of God is so powerful that it can even discern our thoughts. Even what we intend in the heart can be known to God. The word finds the inner man. Man s wisdom is blind. Satan deceives us. Eph. 6:11, Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. God s word exposes the plots and devices of Satan. The word of God is eternal Matt. 24:35, Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away. The earth and all of the works within it will be burned up. 2 Pet. 3:10, But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. We will be judged by the word of God. John 12:48, He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day. The word of God tells us of Jesus Christ and how our obedience to Him can obtain eternal life for us. Conclusion These six things make the word of God powerful. Have you obeyed the word? Are you a Christian, living by the word? The following are the steps necessary to make that happen: The Word of God 6

Faith. Heb. 11:6, But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. When I was in high school (I was about 17 years old), a neighbor boy my same age told me he was an atheist. Since I had been baptized, I took the opportunity to talk to him about the scriptures. He told me that he could see that living the life of a Christian was good, but he wasn t sure if he believed there was a God. But to be on the safe side, maybe he should go to church, and when he dies and stands before God (if there is a God) on the day of Judgment (if there is a Judgment), maybe if God sees that he has gone to church and lived a good life that God would send him to heaven (if there is a heaven), and not to hell (if there is a hell). I told him, It doesn t work that way. You have to believe in Him with all your heart or you cannot please Him. Repentance. Acts 2:38, Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Acts 11:18, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life. If while you were sleeping, you heard a noise in the other room, and you think to yourself, There s a burglar in my house! So you reach for your cell phone, and as quietly as you can, you call the police, tell them there is a burglar in your house, and you give them your address. Soon, you heard them arrive and capture the thief. He yells, I m sorry; I m sorry! What is he sorry for? He is sorry that he got caught; not that he stole. In true repentance the thief would be sorry that he ever stole and wants to change his life so that he would never steal again. That is true repentance. It is a change of mind that brings about a change of action. That is what we have to do before we can become a Christian. Confession. Rom. 10:9-10, That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. What do we confess? That we believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. Note that in the above scriptures that faith (believing), repentance, and confession are UNTO righteousness, life, The Word of God 7

or salvation. Unto means toward something; not that one has already attained. Baptism. It is baptism where righteousness, life, and salvation are attained. Jesus, himself, was baptized to fulfill all righteousness, But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him. And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. (Matt. 3:14-17). Jesus was baptized because God said it was the right thing to do. Did you see how pleased God was about Jesus being baptized? Jesus also said it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. We are baptized because it fulfills His righteousness, not because it is of our righteousness. In fact, if we are not baptized, we are still in our sins. Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. (Acts 2:38). Peter, what did you say the reason of baptism is? for the remission of sins. Why would anyone want to leave out the step that removes our sins? Jesus commanded that to reach salvation we must be baptized. And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. (Mark 16:15-16). Ananias told Saul (before he was rename Paul) the very same thing, And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord. (Acts 22:16). Baptism is a requirement given by God. Baptism is called a burial. Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. (Rom. 6:4). Our old man is to be dead to us. Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been The Word of God 8

planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. (Rom. 6:3-6). Baptism is God s blueprint for applying the blood of Christ in our lives by baptism. We are free from our old sins only when we are baptized. This doesn t mean sprinkling. The scripture above says baptism is a burial. We don t take a dead body to the cemetery and sprinkle a little dirt over it; we bury the body.
